Book excerpt: In Chamber Music: An Extensive Guide for Listeners,Lucy Miller Murray transforms her decades of program notes for some of the world’s most distinguished artists and presenters into the go-to guide for the chamber music novice and enthusiast. Offering practical information on the broad array of chamber music works from the Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods—and an artful selection from the Baroque period of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works—Chamber Music: An Extensive Guide for Listeners is both the perfect reference resource and chamber music primer for listeners. Covering over 500 works, Murray surveys in clear and simple language the historical and musical impact of some 130 composers—20 of them living. Notably, Chamber Music includes the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Bartok, and Shostakovich, as well as 35 piano trios of Haydn. It also provides critical information and assessments of works by composers not nearly so well known, both past and present. Entries appear in alphabetical order by composer, and, in every instance, give a brief introduction to the composer’s life and work. Of particular interest are the brief spotlight contributions, from well-known figures in the chamber music world, who focus on the performance experience or offer special knowledge of the works. This work is an ideal introduction and reference for students and scholars, new listeners, and enthusiasts of the chamber music tradition in Western music. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A History of Baroque Music is a detailed treatment of the music of the Baroque era, with particular focus on the seventeenth century. The author's approach is a history of musical style with an emphasis on musical scores. The book is divided initially by time period into early and later Baroque (1600-1700 and 1700-1750 respectively), and secondarily by country and composer. An introductory chapter discusses stylistic continuity with the late Renaissance and examines the etymology of the term "Baroque." The concluding chapter on the composer Telemann addresses the stylistic shift that led to the end of the Baroque and the transition into the Classical period."--Jacket.

Book The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer Biber Muffat and their Contemporaries

Download or read book The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer Biber Muffat and their Contemporaries written by Charles E. Brewer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on primary sources, many of which have never been published or examined in detail, this book examines the music of the late seventeenth-century composers, Biber, Schmeltzer and Muffat, and the compositions preserved in the extensive Moravian archives in Kromeriz. These works have never before been fully examined in the cultural and conceptual contexts of their time. Charles E. Brewer sets these composers and their music within a framework that first examines the basic Baroque concepts of instrumental style, and then provides a context for the specific works. The dances of Schmeltzer, for example, functioned both as incidental music in Viennese operas and as music for elaborate court pantomimes and balls. These same cultural practices also account for some of Biber's most programmatic music, which accompanied similar entertainments in Kromeriz and Salzburg. The many sonatas by these composers have also been misunderstood by not being placed in a context where it was normal to be entertained in church and edified in court. Many of the works discussed here remain unpublished but have, in recent years, been recorded. This book enhances our understanding and appreciation of these recordings by providing an analysis of the context in which the works were first performed.

Book Essential Bach Arranged for the Guitar

Download or read book Essential Bach Arranged for the Guitar written by Lily Afshar and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Bach Arranged for Guitar provides guitarists with a new approach to many of Bach's masterpieces. The fingerings in the arrangements make the guitar sound rich and full, as if the pieces were written for the instrument. Attention is given to the musical line by using cross-string fingerings in a consistent manner. This approach allows the harmonies to become more evident as well. By using a more musical approach for the fingerings, playing Bach on the guitar no longer feels cumbersome. Suggested dynamics and articulations are also included. Fingerings and slurs are notated close to the notes for easy reading

Book Thinking as You Play

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sylvia Curry Coats
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780253346766
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Thinking as You Play written by Sylvia Curry Coats and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking as You Play focuses on how to teach, not what to teach. Sylvia Coats gives piano teachers tools to help students develop creativity and critical thinking, and guidelines for organizing the music taught into a comprehensive curriculum. She suggests effective strategies for questioning and listening to students to help them think independently and improve their practice and performance. She also discusses practical means to develop an awareness of learning modalities and personality types. A unique top-down approach assists with presentations of musical concepts and principles, rather than a bottom-up approach of identifying facts before the reasons are known. Thinking as You Play is one of the few available resources for the teacher of group piano lessons. Ranging from children's small groups to larger university piano classes, Coats discusses auditioning and grouping students, strategies for maximizing student productivity, and suggestions for involving each student in the learning process.

Download or read book Johann Sebastian Bach written by Philipp Spitta and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental study of Johann Sebastian Bach ranks among the great classics of musicology. Since its first publication in 1873–80, it has remained the basic work on Bach and the foundation of later research and study. The three-part treatment describes in chronological sequence practically everything that is known of the composer's life: his ancestry, his immediate family, his associations, his employers, and the countless occasions on which his musical genius emerged. Author Philipp Spitta accompanies this biographical material with quotations from primary sources: correspondence, family records, diaries, official documents, and more. In addition to biographical data, Spitta reviews Bach's musical production, with analyses of more than 500 pieces, covering all the important works. More than 450 musical excerpts are included in the main text, and a 43-page musical supplement illustrates longer passages. Despite the scholarly nature of this work, it also has the rare distinction of being a study that can be read with considerable enjoyment and great profit by every serious music lover, with or without a substantial background in the history of music or musical theory.
