Book excerpt: A literary event—twenty short stories by the late Maeve Brennan, one of The new Yorker's most admired writers. Five are set in the author's native Dublin, a city, like Joyce's, of paralyzed souls and unexpressed love. the others are set in and around her adopted Manhattan, which she once called "the capsized city—half–capsized, anyway, with the inhabitants hanging on, most of them still able to laugh as they cling to the island that is their life's predicament." Some of the stories are quietly tender, some ferociously satirical, some unique in their chilly emotional weather. All are Maeve Brennan at her incomparable best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widow of a reputed mobster is much more than a legal client needing a new will. It develops that she has effectively hidden a famous occupation with the use of a pseudonym. And, the lawyer she engages has never before practiced law, had any clients nor is he aware of her other life. The setting for this mystery is a remote island in the most eastern stretches of Long Island Sound, unlike any of the other small islands that dot the seas off the eastern end of Long Island's north fork. On this isle resides a woman shepherd who tends a flock of sheep for the widow. She, however, also has another life; being, in fact, an artist of repute. These are only a few of the anomalies that figure prominently in the fast paced thriller, filled with many interesting characters, a number of sub plots and surprising developments that should keep the reader riveted to its pages from beginning to end.

Book The Rose Garden of Saadi

  • Author : Hamid Eslamian
  • Publisher : Persian Learning Center
  • Release : 2022-03-09
  • ISBN : 1636209106
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book The Rose Garden of Saadi written by Hamid Eslamian and published by Persian Learning Center. This book was released on 2022-03-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join with Sádi and Observe his Miracle Words! بنی آدم اعضای یکدیگرند که در آفرینش ز یک گوهرند The sons of Adam are limbs of each other Having been created of one essence. چو عضوی به درد آورد روزگار دگر عضوها را نماند قرار When the calamity of time afflicts one limb The other limbs cannot remain at rest. تو کز محنت دیگران بی غمی نشاید که نامت نهند آدمی If thou hast no sympathy for the troubles of others Thou art unworthy to be called by the name of a man. Sádi's prose style of writing is simple but vigorous and described as "simple but impossible to imitate" flows quite naturally and effortlessly. Its simplicity, however, is based on a semantic web consisting of synonymity, homophony, and oxymoron buttressed by internal rhythm and external rhyme. Gulistan consisting of 8 chapters is primarily in prose. The book widely addresses kings’ morality, dervishes’ behavior, benefits of contentment, the advantage of silence, love and youthfulness, weakness in old age, the effect of education, and the rules for conduct life. Golestan can be considered Saadi's report of the society of his time, in which the cultural and social conditions of the people are depicted in real life. In some stories, there are imaginary or real third-party characters, and they play a role, but in some stories, the author is present and observes some of these events, the real events of his life and some are merely fictional events. Sádi attempts to advise people to live freely and to improve the quality of their lives in Gulistan. The translation appearing in this book is by Edward Rehatsek in 1888. Goethe and Andre du Ryer presented Sádi to the west for the first time in 1634. The first full translation of Gulistan in English was finished by Sir Richard Francis Burton. Gulistan is a masterpiece of Persian writing and rhetoric and one of the most influential prose books in Persian literature. This book has been used for many years as an educational resource for schools and helps your understanding of Persian culture and literature.
