Book Mapping Riverscapes Using High Spatial Resolution Remote Sensing Data

Download or read book Mapping Riverscapes Using High Spatial Resolution Remote Sensing Data written by Brandon Overstreet and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing has emerged as a viable tool for studying river systems and facilitating their management and rehabilitation. We explore how high-resolution remote sensing data, specifically multispectral imagery and lidar with sub-meter spatial resolution, can be combined to produce spatially continuous maps of land cover, river bathymetry, flow hydraulics, and geomorphic classification. We present a framework for incorporating publicly available data with field surveys to produce high-resolution, spatially continuous landcover maps through image classification and water depth maps through spectrally based depth retrieval. Results indicate that the accuracy of the image-derived depth is spatially variable based on the degree of sun glint contamination in the imagery. We build on existing marine glint-removal methods to develop a river-specific technique that removes sun glint from shallow rivers by accounting for non-negligible water-leaving near-infrared radiance. This new sun glint-removal method can improve the accuracy of spectrally based depth retrieval in cases where sun glint dominates the at-sensor radiance. Water surface roughness (WSR) exerts a primary control on the amount of surface reflected light measured by a remote sensor. WSR in rivers is a function of flow hydraulics, channel form, slope, bed roughness, and wind, but studies exploring these links have been primarily limited to flume experiments due to the challenge of collecting spatially distributed, paired observations of WSR and flow in rivers. We developed and deployed a new system for measuring WSR in rivers using an ultrasonic sensor paired with an acoustic Doppler current profiler. Results present an initial step towards understanding hydraulic drivers of WSR and the relationship to imagery. We conclude by describing a framework for assessing the potential for remote sensing of rivers across basins based on available imagery and channel attributes obtained from US Geological Survey streamgages. The basin assessment framework produces metrics of image-derived depth retrieval performance and channel visibility that could be used to determine the viability of future remote sensing studies.
