Book excerpt: Red-winged blackbird reproduction in stormwater ponds in an urban and suburban landscape: evidence for ecological traps Ecological traps develop when organisms prefer a sink habitat over an available source habitat. Following best management practices, stormwater ponds are created to alleviate effects of increased impervious surfaces in areas of urbanization such as decreases in groundwater recharge. However, given their tendency to attract wildlife, organisms that use these habitats can become exposed to greater than normal levels of pollutants. Additionally, pond structure can attract a diversity of wildlife to the pond, including an assortment of predators, which can cause decreases in reproductive success. I surveyed breeding Red-winged Blackbird populations in a suburban and urban landscape to determine stormwater ponds' potential role as an ecological trap. I suggest that stormwater ponds in suburban landscapes are serving as sink habitats for Red-winged Blackbirds due to high rates of predation, and may potentially act as ecological traps if preferentially selected, while urban landscapes may support Red-winged Blackbirds.
