Book excerpt: This handbook, which was developed in recognition of the need for the compilation and dissemination of information on advanced traffic control systems, presents the basic principles for the planning, design, and implementation of such systems for urban streets and freeways. The presentation concept and organization of this handbook is developed from the viewpoint of systems engineering. Traffic control studies are described, and traffic control and surveillance concepts are reviewed. Hardware components are outlined, and computer concepts, and communication concepts are stated. Local and central controllers are described, as well as display, television and driver information systems. Available systems technology and candidate system definition, evaluation and implementation are also covered. The management of traffic control systems is discussed.

Download or read book Traffic Data Collection and its Standardization written by Jaume Barceló and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nice night of October 2007, in Beijing, during the XV World Conference on ITS a number of colleagues met informally for a dinner party that spontaneously became a vivid discussion on the importance of traffic data for all types of p- poses. Researchers can hardly do any progress in modeling, developing, and te- ing theories without suitable data, and what practitioners can do in real life is limited not only by technology but also by the availability of the required data. Quite frequently, the data and not the technologies are what determine how far we can go. Any discussion about traffic data leads in a natural way to a discussion on the variety of traffic data sources, formats, levels of aggregation, accuracies, and so on. Consequently, we moved to talk on the initiative that Kuwahara had undertaken in his traffic laboratory at the University of Tokyo, known as the International Traffic Data Base, and thus smoothly but inexorably we came to agree that it would be convenient to organize a workshop to continue our discussion at a more formal level, share our points of view with other colleagues, listen what they had to say and, if possible, d- seminate the findings in our professional and academic communities.

Download or read book Implementing Service Quality in IP Networks written by Vilho Räisänen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While more and more data is shifted from circuit-switched to packet-switched networks, the users of these networks expect a smooth, continuously unproblematic service (unrelated to the amount of data transported). Therefore, the reliability of a network as well as the satisfaction of its users relies largely on Quality of Service (QoS). Service quality through resource management in IP networks will ensure that sufficient resources are available to fulfil the delay of applications and packet loss requirements. This year several books on QoS from the angle of operators/engineers have been published HOWEVER, none of these titles tackle the management side of the problem. This book shows how to determine quality requirements of services, it discusses and considers the various means of allocating network resources and of supervising the service quality. Furthermore, it explores strategies for allocating network resources and their relation to revenue or operator utility as well as service allocation optimization. The book concludes with a Nokia case study that illustrates the previously mentioned concepts. Essential reading for networking professionals wishing to understand service quality management in IP networks, as well as students needing to understand principles and basic techniques of service quality management.

Download or read book Measuring Performance in Public and Nonprofit Organizations written by Theodore H. Poister and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a commitment to increased accountability and improved performance has become essential in both governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations. To help managers and executives in their ongoing quest for greater accountability and improved performance Theodore H. Poister, offers a comprehensive resource for designing and implementing effective performance measurement systems at the agency level. The ideas, tools, and processes in this vital resource will help organizations develop measurement systems to support such results-oriented management approaches as strategic management, results-based budgeting, performance management, process improvement, performance contracting, and employee incentive systems. Using this book as a guide, public and nonprofit organizations can accurately measure outputs, efficiency, productivity, effectiveness, service quality, and customer satisfaction, and use the resulting data to strengthen decision-making and improve agency and program performance.
