Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cecily Devereux reconsiders the extent to which McClung's enduring legacy of crusading for women's rights is founded on the ideas of British eugenicists such as Francis Galton and Caleb Saleeby and implicated in the passage of eugenical legislation in Canada. In a critical study of Painted Fires, the Pearlie Watson books, and several short stories, Devereux attempts to understand McClung's fiction in terms of its engagement with a politics of "race" and nation and constructions of specifically "racial" impurities that many women saw themselves as uniquely able to "cure."

Book Eastern Encounters Canadian Women s Writing about the East 1867 1929

Download or read book Eastern Encounters Canadian Women s Writing about the East 1867 1929 written by Shoshannah Ganz 著 and published by 國立臺灣大學出版中心. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Encounters releases early Canadian women writers from a simple focus on autobiography and racial politics and interrogates their specific and sophisticated Asian influences. With a compelling reconstruction of historical context, Ganz has created perhaps the first book in a much-needed series that will revisit Canadian nationalism through the important cultural exchanges she examines. Though shaped with an Asian readership in mind, Eastern Encounters is an important work for all who wish to challenge the notion that Judeo-Christian traditions almost exclusively shaped early Canadian discourse.

Book The Next Instalment

Download or read book The Next Instalment written by Wendy Roy and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens next? That was the question asked of early-twentieth-century authors Nellie L. McClung, L. M. Montgomery, and Mazo de la Roche, whose stories and novels appeared serially and kept readers and publishers in a state of anticipation. Each author answered through the writing and dissemination of further instalments. McClung’s Pearlie Watson trilogy (1908–1921), Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables books (1908–1939), and de la Roche’s Jalna novels (1927–1960) were read avidly not just as sequels but as serials in popular and literary newspapers and magazines. A number of the books were also adapted to stage, film, and television. The Next Instalment argues that these three Canadian women writers, all born in the same decade of the late nineteenth century, were influenced by early-twentieth-century publication, marketing, and reading practices to become heavily invested in the cultural phenomenon of the continuing story. A close look at their serials, sequels, and adaptations reveals that, rather than existing as separate cultural productions, each is part of a cultural and material continuum that encourages repeated consumption through development and extension of the originary story. This work considers the effects that each mode of dissemination of a narrative has on the other.

Book The Buffalo People

  • Author : Liz Bryan
  • Publisher : Heritage House Publishing Co

  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book The Buffalo People written by Liz Bryan and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation The Native people of the Canadian prairies have been living on the land for at least 12,000 years, finding sustainable lifestyles from the grasslands and the aspen parklands. Our knowledge of these people is limited: they had no writing, no large settlements, and very little in the way of lasting material things. Before the arrival of Europeans, they had no guns, no horses, and no hard metals. What clues we have come primarily from the work of archaeologists sifting through the buried evidence-little bits of stone, bone, and pottery, refuse heaps and firepits, ancients villages and burial sites, fingerprints, and prehistoric blood. Liz Bryan takes the clues from decades of archaeological research and presents an immensely entertaining and informative account of these ancient people. First published by University of Alberta Press in 1991, this revised and updated edition of the book features photographs, maps, and line drawings to help illustrate this amazing story.
