Book Public Response to Community Shelter Planning

Download or read book Public Response to Community Shelter Planning written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study investigated responses made by adults in the City of Rochester and Olmsted County, Minnesota to a Community Shelter Plan (CSP) and to OCD booklet H-14, 'In Time of Emergency.' A total of 493 interviews were completed during the study. This included independent control samples before and after CSP as well as a panel of 97 persons interviewed at both time periods. The CSP plan allocated public fallout shelters to residents based on their place of residence. Attention was adequate. Seventy-four percent were aware of receiving CSP materials and half read some of either the CSP maps or booklet H-14. Comprehension was less adequate, however. Only half the readers (24 percent of the total population) could correctly identify the shelter which the plan assigned them. Attitudes formed toward the CSP program were extremely favorable, but little change in behavior resulted. A slight increase was observed in attitudes toward shelters. No net change in adoption of either home or public shelters was found although a number of individuals switched their positions. (Author).

Book Impact of Career Development Program Upon Local Coordinators

Download or read book Impact of Career Development Program Upon Local Coordinators written by Charles L. Mulford and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of the OCD Career Development Program. The specific objectives were to determine the program's impact on the local civil defense coordinator's knowledge of and ability to build and operate a viable local civil defense organization and to link the official (vertical) civil defense systems to the local community (horizontal) social systems. A portion of the data required to meaningfully evaluate a training program such as the Career Development Program was collected by a mail questionnaire which determined the perceptions of 128 local civil defense graduates of Career Development regarding changes in their knowledge, behavior, attitudes and degree of participation in civil defense related activities resulting from their attendance at the Career Development Program. The four impact areas--knowledge, behavior, attitudes and degree of participation--were utilized as the major criteria in assessing the degree to which Staff College is achieving the objectives established for the Career Development Program. Book Public Response to Community Shelter Planning Des Moines and Polk County Iowa Appendices

Download or read book Public Response to Community Shelter Planning Des Moines and Polk County Iowa Appendices written by Paul Yarbrough and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study investigated responses made by adults in Des Moines, Iowa, to the Community Shelter Plan (CSP). A total of 938 interviews were completed during the study. This included adequate control samples before and after publication of CSP as well as panels. One panel was initiated before CSP, other were continued from the researchers' earlier Home Fallout Protection Survey study. The CSP message included a plan allocating public fallout shelters to residents based on place of residence. It was published in the form of a 12-page Sunday newspaper advertising supplement. Attention given the message was about average with similar supplements (slightly less than half of the total audience), but comprehension of the plan was low. Only seven percent of our control sample could recall the name or location of a shelter allocated for his use and only four percent could recall how they were instructed to travel to the shelter. Acceptance responses were low. A slight increase was observed in level of knowledge about a local civil defense program and in the anticipatory decision to concurrently adopt public or home shelter protection alternatives. The dispositional model did not hold well in predicting attention to CSP, but did hold in predicting comprehension and acceptance responses. (Author).

Book Primary Care and Public Health

Download or read book Primary Care and Public Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensuring that members of society are healthy and reaching their full potential requires the prevention of disease and injury; the promotion of health and well-being; the assurance of conditions in which people can be healthy; and the provision of timely, effective, and coordinated health care. Achieving substantial and lasting improvements in population health will require a concerted effort from all these entities, aligned with a common goal. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) examine the integration of primary care and public health. Primary Care and Public Health identifies the best examples of effective public health and primary care integration and the factors that promote and sustain these efforts, examines ways by which HRSA and CDC can use provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to promote the integration of primary care and public health, and discusses how HRSA-supported primary care systems and state and local public health departments can effectively integrate and coordinate to improve efforts directed at disease prevention. This report is essential for all health care centers and providers, state and local policy makers, educators, government agencies, and the public for learning how to integrate and improve population health.

Book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States

Download or read book Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day in the United States, children and adolescents are victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. Despite the serious and long-term consequences for victims as well as their families, communities, and society, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes are largely under supported, inefficient, uncoordinated, and unevaluated. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States examines commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents of the United States under age 18. According to this report, efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes require better collaborative approaches that build upon the capabilities of people and entities from a range of sectors. In addition, such efforts need to confront demand and the individuals who commit and benefit from these crimes. The report recommends increased awareness and understanding, strengthening of the law's response, strengthening of research to advance understanding and to support the development of prevention and intervention strategies, support for multi-sector and interagency collaboration, and creation of a digital information-sharing platform. A nation that is unaware of these problems or disengaged from solutions unwittingly contributes to the ongoing abuse of minors. If acted upon in a coordinated and comprehensive manner, the recommendations of Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States can help advance and strengthen the nation's emerging efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States.

Book Climate Change the Indoor Environment and Health

Download or read book Climate Change the Indoor Environment and Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The indoor environment affects occupants' health and comfort. Poor environmental conditions and indoor contaminants are estimated to cost the U.S. economy tens of billions of dollars a year in exacerbation of illnesses like asthma, allergic symptoms, and subsequent lost productivity. Climate change has the potential to affect the indoor environment because conditions inside buildings are influenced by conditions outside them. Climate Change, the Indoor Environment, and Health addresses the impacts that climate change may have on the indoor environment and the resulting health effects. It finds that steps taken to mitigate climate change may cause or exacerbate harmful indoor environmental conditions. The book discusses the role the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should take in informing the public, health professionals, and those in the building industry about potential risks and what can be done to address them. The study also recommends that building codes account for climate change projections; that federal agencies join to develop or refine protocols and testing standards for evaluating emissions from materials, furnishings, and appliances used in buildings; and that building weatherization efforts include consideration of health effects. Climate Change, the Indoor Environment, and Health is written primarily for the EPA and other federal agencies, organizations, and researchers with interests in public health; the environment; building design, construction, and operation; and climate issues.
