Download or read book Zinc Finger Proteins written by Shiro Iuchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, a few scientists started working on a Xenopus transcription factor, TFIIIA. They soon discovered a novel domain associated with zinc, and named this domain "zinc finger. " Th e number of proteins with similar zinc fingers grew quickly and these proteins are now called C2H2, Cys2His2 or classical zinc finger proteins. To date, about 24,000 C2H2 zinc finger proteins have been recognized. Approximately 700 human genes, or more than 2% of the genome, have been estimated to encode C2H2 finger proteins. From the beginning these proteins were thought to be numerous, but no one could have predicted such a huge number. Perhaps thousands of scientists are now working on C2H2 zinc finger proteins fi-om variou s viewpoints. This field is a good example of how a new science begins with the insight of a few scientists and how it develops by efforts of numerous independent scientists, in contrast to a policy-driven scientific project, such as the Human Genome Project, with goals clearly set at its inception and with work performed by a huge collaboration throughout the world. As more zinc finger proteins were discovered, several subfamilies, such as C2C2, CCHC, CCCH, LIM, RING, TAZ, and FYVE emerged, increasing our understanding of zinc fingers. The knowledge was overwhelming. Moreover, scientists began defining the term "zinc finger" differently and using various names for identical zinc fingers. These complications may explain why no single comprehensive resource of zinc finger proteins was available before this publication.

Download or read book Molecular Biology of RNA written by David Elliott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RNA plays a central, and until recently, somewhat underestimated role in the genetics underlying all forms of life on earth. This versatile molecule not only plays a crucial part in the synthesis of proteins from a DNA template, but is also intrinsically involved in the regulation of gene expression, and can even act as a catalyst in the form of a ribozyme. This latter property has led to the hypothesis that RNA - rather than DNA - could have played an essential part in the origin of life itself. This landmark text provides a systematic overview of the exciting and rapidly moving field of RNA biology. Key pioneering experiments, which provided the underlying evidence for what we now know, are described throughout, while the relevance of the subject to human disease is highlighted via frequent boxes. For the second edition of Molecular Biology of RNA, more introductory material has been incorporated at the beginning of the text, to aid students studying the subject for the first time. Throughout the text, new material has been included - particularly in relation to RNA binding domains, non-coding RNAs, and the connection between RNA biology and epigenetics. Finally, a new closing chapter discusses how exciting new technologies are being used to explore current topical areas of research.

Book excerpt: The first two volumes of the "Handbook of Metalloproteins", published in 2001, focused on a number of metals, including iron, nickel, manganese, cobalt, copper and vanadium. Now we are delighted to present volume three which extends the wealth of knowledge and focuses on proteins found in the redox-inactive ions of zinc and calcium. (Midwest).

Download or read book Tissue Specific Gene Expression written by Rainer Renkawitz and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1989 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of review articles is a valuable contribution to current research in one of the most important areas of molecular biology. It summarizes the exciting results of research on regulatory mechanisms of a selected number of model genes (for example, immunoglobulin genes, human growth hormone gene, albumin gene). Written by international experts, it concentrates on * regulatory proteins * regulatory sequences * chromatin structure * tissue specific splicing By focusing on a few representative model genes, the book enables the reader to draw both detailed and general conclusions about the mechanisms of tissue specific gene regulation. Geneticists in research and medicine can thus acquire vital information without having to consider an otherwise overwhelming number of systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much anticipated, the Second Edition of Surgery: Basic Science and Clinical Evidence features fully revised and updated information on the evidence-based practice of surgery, including significant new sections on trauma and critical care and the often challenging surgical care of unique populations, including elderly, pediatric, immunocompromised, and obese patients as well as timely new chapters on the pre- and post-operative care of the cardiac surgery patient, intestinal transplantation, surgical infections, the fundamentals of cancer genetics and proteomics. Also new to this edition are discussions of electrosurgical instruments, robotics, imaging modalities, and other emerging technologies influencing the modern practice of surgery. Clinically focused sections in gastrointestinal, vascular, cardiothoracic, transplant, and cancer surgery enable the surgeon to make decisions based upon the most relevant data in modern surgical practice. The text is enhanced by more than 1,000 illustrations and hundreds of the signature evidence-based tables that made the first edition of SURGERY an instant classic.
