Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about the harm that industrial activities may cause the environ ment, means that all are now being scrutinised to assess their impact. Packaging is no exception. It is now high on the political agenda, in terms of the environmental issues which are targeted for immediate attention in industrially developed countries and is often perceived as a wasteful drain on non-sustainable resources and an unnecessary indulgence on the part of affluent societies. This book seeks to understand and respond to the variety of pressures packaging now faces, and to review and correct the many misconceptions that exist in relation to its environmental impacts. It has been structured to address the topical and critical areas for attention; it identifies and explains what are seen to be the main issues and discusses the responses being made to them in different parts of the world. More specifically, this book is intended to: • clarify the facts and dispel many of the myths surrounding the environmental aspects of packaging • explain and emphasise packaging's essential role in the workings of human society • review legislative and regulatory developments, the trends and the extent to which they are converging • consider what constitutes environmentally responsible packaging manufacture • discuss and compare the relative environmental merits and differ ences between the various packaging materials and systems • address the requirements for identifying and controlling manufac turing impacts and the role of environmental auditing in this process
Download or read book Packaging Law Europe written by Bailey Patricia M. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume responds to the 1991 enactment by the German government of its Packaging Ordinance, which led to new or revised packaging legislation throughout the European Union. Problems caused by this divergent legislation led to the enactment of the Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste in late 1994. Unfortunately, the imprecision of the Directive necessary to ensure its enactment has led to further disputes. At the heart of these disputes is the classic struggle between the priorities of environmental protection and economic development. This book analyses the implementation of the Directive by Member States, and in particular, issues such as the imposition of quotas on reusable containers; the use of economic instruments and environmental agreements; and competition issues and state aids. The book enlightens readers to the current debates regarding packaging legislation which continue today, despite the enactment of EU legislation.

Download or read book Environmental Regulation in a Federal System written by Tim Jeppesen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An imaginative book that contributes significantly to the debate on regulatory federalism. The even-handed approach should appeal to a broad audience, including academics, policymakers, and the general reader interested in the optimal institutional arrangements for the provisioning of public goods.' - John A. List, University of Maryland, College Park, US In this important book Tim Jeppesen investigates environmental regulation in a federal system and addresses the underlying question of whether regulation should be decided centrally, by EU institutions, or de-centrally, by individual member states. Whilst simple economic reasoning presumes that transboundary externalities require central solutions and local externalities need local solutions, the author finds that the real answer is much more complicated.

Download or read book Waste Treatment and Disposal written by R E Hester and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Issue follows on from the review of waste incineration in Issue 2, providing a thorough and detailed review of other waste management options. Waste generation affects everyone, and its treatment and disposal are matters of increasing complexity and urgency. Waste Treatment and Disposal examines the environmental impact of sewage and industrial effluent treatment on inland and coastal waters, in the atmosphere and on land. It also looks into current practice in the design, engineering, operation and control of landfill sites, and the effect of changes in regulatory policy. A wide range of waste management practices result in atmospheric discharges and this book reviews the localized impacts and mitigation of the discharge and the regulatory framework within which waste management has to operate. Waste Treatment and Disposal also covers the general and technical issues facing the materials recycling industry; looks into the factors affecting deep underground storage of radioactive fuel waste produced by nuclear reactors; and provides data from a number of case studies in cost-benefit analysis, demonstrating the utility of a consistent economic theory of waste management.
