Download or read book Proceedings of the National Conference of Charities and Correction written by Isabel C. Barrows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Conference of Charities and Correction: At the Nineteenth Annual Session Held in Denver, Col., June 23-29, 1892 Dependent Children, Interstate Migration, the Organization of Charities, the Colony System for the Feeble-minded, and the two forms of State Care of the Insane, illustrated by the system of New York and that of Wisconsin. The memorial service in remembrance of Oscar mcculloch does not need to be specially mentioned, since every reader will turn to those pages. Unfortunately, the discussions of the sectional meetings were not stenographically reported. The committee having charge of each section appointed its own chairman and secretary, and the reports were furnished by them to the official reporter. The success of these meetings and the value of their discussions would probably justify full stenographic reports in future, unless these should swell our annual volume to a size too large for convenient use. The present volume is the largest we have ever issued, although several of the reports and other documents and many of the Speeches in debate have been materially abridged by their authors or by the editor. The Reports from States are made up differently from the usual form, and, although incomplete, give more information about the charities of the whole coun try than can be elsewhere found. Portions of the volume can be obtained separately by application to the printer, George H. Ellis, 141 Franklin Street, Boston. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Conference of Charities and Correction: At the Twenty-First Annual Session Held in Nashville, Tenn. May 23-29, 1894 In addition to the usual indexes and lists of State officers this Report furnishes the names and localities of all the State institutions in the United States, so far as they could be secured. Several statistical tables give valuable information as to the population of such institutions and the cost of support. Within a few years some States have begun to hold annual conferences for the study of their own charities and corrections. An attempt was made to secure the programmes of these local conferences for record and comparison. So far as these could be obtained, they are printed in this volume. Each year makes the Report of the National Conference of Charities and Correction of more interest to the student and, as these various statistics are more accurately compiled, the value of the book will be much increased. It has already be come indispensable to charity workers and students of soci ology. This Report and such back numbers as are still in print may be ordered of the Treasurer, John M. Glenn, Glenn Building, Baltimore, Md., at the price of per volume, with dis counts for more than ten Reports. The next meeting of the Conference will be in New Haven, Conn., in May, 1895, Mr. Robert Treat Paine, of Boston, Pres ident; H. H. Hart, of St. Paul, Minn., Permanent Secretary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Conference of Charities and Correction: At the Twenty-Sixth Annual Session Held in the City of Cincinnati, Ohio, May 17-23, 1899 The twenty-sixth session of the National Conference of Char ities and Correction was held in Cincinnati, Ohio, beginning May 17, 1899. The attendance was large, numbering nearly eight hundred. The reception by the people of Cincinnati was most gracious and cordial. A marked feature of the gathering was the prominence given to the subjects of the Conference by the pulpits throughout the city, thus helping to create a public sentiment in favor of reforms of various kinds. The present volume has been abridged somewhat, yet, it is hoped, without lessening its value. An abstract of the proceedings of the Charity Organization section is included. Many of the papers read at other admirable section meetings are given in the body of the volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Facilitating Injustice

Download or read book Facilitating Injustice written by Yoosun Park and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On February 19, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066-the primary action that propelled the removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans. From the last days of that month, when California's Terminal Island became the first site of forced removal, to March of 1946, when the last of the War Relocation Authority concentration camps was finally closed, the federal government incarcerated approximately 120,000 persons of ""Japanese ancestry."" Social workers were integral cogs in this federal program of forced removal and incarceration: they vetted, registered, counseled, and tagged all affected individuals; staffed social work departments within the concentration camps; and worked in the offices administering the ""resettlement,"" the planned scattering of the population explicitly intended to prevent regional re-concentration. In its unwillingness to take a resolute stand against the removal and incarceration and carrying out its government-assigned tasks, social work enacted and thus legitimized the bigoted policies of racial profiling en masse. Facilitating Injustice reconstructs this forgotten disciplinary history to highlight an enduring tension in the field-the conflict between its purported value-base promoting pluralism and social justice and its professional functions enabling injustice and actualizing social biases. Highlighting the urgency to examine the profession's current approaches, practices, and policies within today's troubled nation, this text serves as a useful resource for students and scholars of immigration, ethnic studies, internment studies, U.S. history, American studies, and social welfare policy/history."
