Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate and Water: Transboundary Challenges in the Americas explores some of the ways that climate, hydrology, and water resource management converge at the borders between jurisdictions and countries in the western Hemisphere. This book is unique in focusing on case studies of climate-hydrology-water resource management in diverse contexts in South, Central, and North America. This book is singular in highlighting important problems arising from the very existence of boundaries drawn and defined by society. Addressing such problems takes on increasing urgency as the world becomes ever more inter connected and interdependent. Target groups for this book include water resource managers and decision makers at levels from the international to the local; scientists involved in interdisciplinary studies of basic and applied climatology, hydrology, and environmental studies; and readers specializing in institutional analyses, including transboundary water law, policy analysis, and risk assessment. This book is also a useful text for college classes addressing natural resources management in general, and the transfer of scientific knowledge to society.

Book Water Management and Climate Change

Download or read book Water Management and Climate Change written by Cecilia Tortajada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To plan successfully and manage the increased uncertainties posed by likely future climate change, knowledge needs to advance much more for the water profession beyond what it is now available. Meeting these challenges does not depend exclusively on advances in climatological-hydrologic models. Policies for adaptation and strategies for mitigation measures have to be formulated on the basis of what are likely to be the potential impacts. These will have to be regularly fine-tuned and implemented according to changing needs and as more reliable knowledge and data become available. Even more challenging will be the politics of policy making and implementation, which will require a quantum leap from current policy-making and implementation processes. One can even say that, in addition to the development of more reliable models, the politics of climate change and water management remains one of the greatest uncertainties for the water profession. This book addresses water management practices and how these should and could be modified to cope with climatic and other related uncertainties over the next two to three decades; the types of strategies and good practices that may be available or have to be developed to cope with the current and expected uncertainties in relation to climate change; and the types of knowledge, information and technological developments needed to incorporate possible future climate change impacts within the framework of water resources management. Decision making in the water sector under changing climate and related uncertainties, and societal water security under altering and fluctuating climate are also discussed. Several case studies are included from several basins, cities, regions and countries in both developed and non-developing countries. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.

Book Dictionary and Introduction to Global Environmental Governance

Download or read book Dictionary and Introduction to Global Environmental Governance written by Richard A. Meganck and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique dictionary and introduction to Global Environmental Governance (GEG), written and compiled by two veterans of the international stage, provides a compilation of over 5000 terms, organizations and acronyms, drawn from hundreds of official sources. An introductory essay frames the major issues in GEG and outlines the pitfalls of talking past one another when discussing the most critical of issues facing the planet. It challenges those who are concerned with the management of our planet and its inhabitants to understand and accept a vocabulary common to the often-opposing objectives sought in the many GEG instruments.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 430 pages

Download or read book Water written by Richard Lawford and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2003-01-10 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Water Resources Monograph Series, Volume 16. From the local to the global scale, water use and sustainability are issues of pressing importance. Never before has water science needed to inform water policy so much, and never before have we seen how challenging it is to advance that relationship. How rapidly is the demand for water growing? What climate- or pollution-imposed limits to water supplies exist, and how can we best manage them? Will privatization benefit water management, resource development, and the environment? How can science work more closely with the policy and engineering communities to perfect knowledge-based water planning? Water: Science, Policy, and Management discusses these issues, and more. Scientists in water research and geography, water policy experts, water managers and engineers, lawyers grappling with water issues, and environmentalists concerned with the state of water internationally will find this book a significant resource now and in the coming years.

Book Water Planning for Food Production in Developing Countries

Download or read book Water Planning for Food Production in Developing Countries written by Phillip Z. Kirpich and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Planning for Food Production in Developing Countries brings together the knowledge of past efforts to alleviate water scarcities that have led to food shortages in order to improve the process in the future. Phillip Z. Kirpich addresses this issue as the population and the desire for higher living standards increase in developing countries, bringing about a greater demand for food. He points out that the demand must be met by irrigated, rather than rainfed agriculture. Kirpich details the major obstacles that must be overcome when these situations arise due to the nature of these countries. He explains how the necessary improvements can be made, citing lessons learned from thirty cases in twenty-five countries, so that international agencies and governments can work to efficiently solve these problems.
