Book Powering Pakistan

Download or read book Powering Pakistan written by Michael Kugelman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth in Pakistan's economy has increased the pressure on energy resources. As demand for energy exceeds supply, power outages and planned power cuts (euphemistically termed `load-shedding') are common. In addition to economic costs, energy shortages can also foster political instability. Repeated power failures have already touched off street demonstrations, rioting, and coup rumours. This unrest may be only a foretaste of things to come. --

Book Electricity and Energy Problems with Pakistan Causes Consequences and Sustainable Solutions

Download or read book Electricity and Energy Problems with Pakistan Causes Consequences and Sustainable Solutions written by Tashif Ahmad and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: A, GC University (GC University), language: English, abstract: Energy is considered to be the life line of an economy. It is a most vital instrument of the socio-economic development of a country. Energy is a very important factor in the production process. Energy is pivotal in running machinery in factories and industrial units, for lighting our cities and powering our vehicles etc. There has been enormous increase in the demand of energy due to the massive industrialization and rapid population growth in comparison to the enhancement in the supply of energy production. Supply of energy is, therefore, far less than the actual demand, resultantly crisis has emerged. An energy crisis can be defined as any great bottleneck (or price rise) in the supply of energy resources to an economy. With the evolution of civilizations, the human demand for energy has continuously increased. At present, the key factor which drives the growth in energy demand include increasing human population, modernization and urbanization. According to the united nations , the world population 6.5 billion in 2005 is to grow to 9.1 billion by 2050 and most of the population growth is expected to place in the developing world Asia and Africa.(Dinner, 1999). Poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy and environmental degradation are the most important challenges faced by the world. Poor and inadequate access to secure an affordable means of energy in one of the crucial factors behind these issues. Electricity for example is vital for providing basic social services such as education and health, water supply and purification, sanitation, and refrigeration of essential medicines. Electricity is of course, very helpful in supporting a wide range of income generation opportunities. The leading countries in the world in terms of population without access to electricity include India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Congo, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Tanzania, and Kenya. With the growing world population and people's aspiration for improved life a central and collective global issue in the new century is to sustain socio-economic growth within the constraints of the earth’s limited natural resource along with preserving the environment.

Book Access to Power

Download or read book Access to Power written by Ijlal Naqvi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pakistan's power sector's woes are less mystery than tragedy, but to conclude simply that a weak state produces poor governance outcomes misses the manner in which these arrangements are important to reproducing existing relations of domination and are resistant to change. The question this book addresses, therefore, isn't just about why Pakistan doesn't produce enough power"--

Book The Future of Pakistan

Download or read book The Future of Pakistan written by Stephen P. Cohen and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With each passing day, Pakistan becomes an even more crucial player in world affairs. Home of the world's second-largest Muslim population, epicenter of the global jihad, location of perhaps the planet's most dangerous borderlands, and armed with nuclear weapons, this South Asian nation will go a long way toward determining what the world looks like ten years from now. The Future of Pakistan presents and evaluates several scenarios for how the country will develop, evolve, and act in the near future, as well as the geopolitical implications of each. Led by renowned South Asia expert Stephen P. Cohen, a team of authoritative contributors looks at several pieces of the Pakistan puzzle. The book begins with Cohen's broad yet detailed overview of Pakistan, placing it within the context of current-day geopolitics and international economics. Cohen's piece is then followed by a number of shorter, more tightly focused essays addressing more specific issues of concern. Cohen's fellow contributors hail from America, Europe, India, and Pakistan itself, giving the book a uniquely international and comparative perspective. They address critical factors such as the role and impact of radical groups and militants, developments in specific key regions such as Punjab and the rugged frontier with Afghanistan, and the influence of —and interactions with —India, Pakistan's archrival since birth. The book also breaks down relations with other international powers such as China and the United States. The all-important military and internal security apparatus come under scrutiny, as do rapidly morphing social and gender issues. Political and party developments are examined along with the often amorphous division of power between Islamabad and the nation's regions and local powers. Uncertainty about Pakistan's trajectory persists. The Future of Pakistan helps us understand the current circumstances, the relevant actors and their motivation, the critical issues at hand, the different outcomes they might produce, and what it all means for Pakistanis, Indians, the United States, and the entire world. Praise for the work of Stephen P. Cohen The Idea of Pakistan: "The intellectual power and rare insight with which Cohen breaks through the complexity of the subject rivals that of classics that have explained other societies posting a comparable challenge to understanding." — Middle East Journal India: Emerging Power: "In light of the events of September 11, 2001, Cohen's perceptive, insightful, and balanced account of emergent India will be essential reading for U.S. foreign policymakers, scholars, and informed citizens." — Choice

Book Pakistan in Crisis

Download or read book Pakistan in Crisis written by Ashok Kapur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-14 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With these questions in mind Professor Kapur charts the continuous power struggles of Pakistan's ruling elites. Using a historical and comparative approach he shows how the search for democracy and national identity has been hindered by army intervention, political intrigue and the failure of Islam to unite the various ethnic factions. While pessimistic about the chances for democracy in Pakistan, he hopes that the democratic pluralism and broad-based political activity emerging in much of Eastern Europe and the Third World will inspire ordinary Pakistanis to transform their country into a nation, in spirit as well as in name.

Book excerpt: Pakistan stands on the front line of the war against terror. Yet this long-time ally of the West, whose links with the US have caused enormous friction within the country, is in deepening crisis. As President Pervez Musharraf struggles to cling to power through states of emergency, press curbs and imprisonment of his opponents, a range of forces threaten to destroy him and tip the country into a full-blown civil war. Drawing on extensive first-hand research and personal knowledge, Tariq Ali investigates both the causes and the consequences of Pakistan's rapid spiral into political chaos. Shedding new light on controversial questions (did the US greenlight the execution of President Zufikar Ali Bhutto in 1979? Is NATO negotiating to grant the Taliban a role in Afghanistan? Are those now jockeying for power any less corrupt than Musharraf's current cronies?) he examines the various disparate elements and each of the key individuals whose conflicts are tearing Pakistan apart.

Book Pakistan after Trump

Download or read book Pakistan after Trump written by Saloni Kapur and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 9/11, the international narrative on Pakistan has painted a picture of a country that is a “safe haven” for terrorists and a “state sponsor of terrorism” that plays a “double game” as it pretends to fight militant Islamist extremists while nurturing them in its “backyard.” This discourse came to prominence in January 2018 when US President Donald Trump famously tweeted that his country had “foolishly” provided military aid to Pakistan since 2001, in return for which Pakistan had given “safe haven to the terrorists [they] hunt in Afghanistan.” This book questions this dominant narrative by showing how the great powers—the United States, the United Kingdom, China, India, Saudi Arabia, and Iran—have directly caused the emergence of a militant ecosystem in Pakistan. Drawing on interviews with journalists, diplomats, academics, military officers, and government officials, it argues that it is Pakistanis who have borne the brunt of terrorist violence, especially since 9/11. The book uses the English School of International Relations’ concept of great power responsibility to explore how powerful states could help fight militancy in Pakistan holistically. It highlights the Pakistani military’s effort to rehabilitate young militants, and posits that international society must support not only “hard” counterterrorism through military aid, but also “soft” counterterrorism such as rehabilitation to address the root causes of radicalisation. With the Trump administration’s suspension of military aid to Pakistan, this timely book offers guidance for policymakers in both the West and Asia on how best to approach Pakistan’s security quagmire.

Download or read book Pakistan s Energy Issues written by Akhtar Ali and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents a thorough analysis of Pakistan's energy sector. Being an insider, he has had enough exposure to be able to point out issues and problems and has been able to develop a package of thorough recommendations. He has argued for better negotiations of CPEC energy sector's terms and has advised NEPRA to take steps to bring down tariff to a fair and affordable level but argues that Petroleum prices in Pakistan are fair and lowest in the region. The author is of the view that energy imports should be discouraged and argues in favour of local resource development and indigenization. In the back drop of remarkable recent reduction in Solar PV prices, he argues for a significant reappraisal of existing plans leading to a major initiative for inducting solar electricity in a distributed mode at about 50 locations. He has proposed alternatives and cheaper approaches with respect to Smart Meters, LPG distribution projects and RLNG terminals etc. Supporting coal, he has criticized avoidance of the required environmental controls and has demanded corrective steps in this respect. Overall, he presents an optimistic picture with critical evaluation of issues and problems. Laden with a lot of data and tables, the book should be a must reading for policy makers, stakeholders, academia and all those who have more than a passing interest in the subject.

Book Pipelines

  • Author : Rafael Kandiyoti
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2008-04-30
  • ISBN : 0857715682
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Pipelines written by Rafael Kandiyoti and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil and natural gas are now acknowledged to be the driving forces of international politics. What has not yet been fully explored is how their delivery affects global geopolitics. Pipelines, once built, create new diplomatic realities - some states are newly connected, others isolated. Some states benefit economically; others lose out. Often new energy supply routes fall across political fault-lines, as in the case of India and Pakistan. In the case of the former Soviet Union, the existing pipeline network reflects an old political reality, and causes tension between the newly independent states and their former Russian master. With energy demand soaring in industrialising Asia, and the resurgence of great power rivalry, the politics and practicalities of pipelines become central to a proper understanding of world affairs. In this groundbreaking and fully updated book, Rafael Kandiyoti takes us along the pipeline networks, from Kandahar to the Caspian basin, from Ceyhan to China, and shows us how they form the foundation of the new geopolitical order. In the process he demonstrates that the issue of energy supply revolves around not only hydrocarbon resources but also their delivery. This is an entirely new way to view the international politics of oil and natural gas, and is therefore crucial to any explanation of the tensions involving Central Asia, the Middle East, Russia, China and Europe.
