Download or read book Dog Tails written by Marge Pizzuti and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-09-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 54 million pet dogs are harbored in the United States today, according to the Statistical Abstract of the US. In 1996, Americans spent over $10,000,000,000 (ten billion dollars) on health care--for their pets according to the American Veterinarian Association. These statistics prove just how much Americans love their pets. Non-fiction animal stories are timeless and thoroughly enjoyed by animal lovers of all ages. Dog Tails contains anecdotes of numerous stray dogs that the author has encountered while working as a Dog Control Officer in Dutchess County, New York for the last fifteen years. Dog Tails is a collection of stories; some heartwarming, some comical and some amazing, but all true. The book also contains some humorous stories of wildlife encounters and a few cat tales as well. In the first chapter, you will meet the author and her family, including their two Golden Retrievers, KC and her son, Jocko. A year after moving to Dutchess County, New York, in May of 1977, KC gave birth to eight puppies. One of the males, Jocko, had a health problem and was added to the family. KC and Jocko managed to keep their owners lives interesting with their mischievous antics. KC and Jocko enjoyed four years of carefree mischief until Jocko was stolen on Christmas Eve, 1982. After six months of fruitless searching for Jocko, the author co-founded Dutchess County Pet HotLine, a volunteer organization. Originally, Pet HotLine's focus was to put an end to the dognapping that was epidemic in the county. In time, the organization became a flourishing clearing house for any lost or found pet. It was and continues to be the only such service available in the county. Chapter two of the book contains heartwarming tales of a number of dogs who benefited from the existence of Pet HotLine. In chapter three, the author decides to become actively involved in the animal field and applies for a Dog Control Officer's position. This chapter briefly explains the requirements of the position and tells why dog control is a necessary evil. Chapter four sets the stage for the stories to follow by giving an overall view of the area where the author lives and works. This chapter also details several people's reactions to some humorous wildlife encounters. As a dog lover, the author has owned a number of dogs over the years. Two of them were obtained from the 'Guiding Eyes for the Blind' program. This chapter contains stories of her personal dogs and explains the requirements of raising a 'Guiding Eyes' puppy. The rest of the book contains stories about stray dogs. In chapter six, the reader meets two 'vicious' Dobermans and reads of their affinity to cars. One Doberman is a carjacker; the other one finds himself trapped by a car. Lyme disease is a horrid disease caused by the bite of a tick. It has been diagnosed in at least 47 states in the US, and has a devastatingly debilitating effect on the humans that are afflicted. When a dog gets Lyme disease, the symptoms are often mistaken for rabies. This chapter relates the tales of two dogs with Lyme disease. Chapter eight tells the story of a little abused dog and his unique rescue. Chapter nine is about two dogs who find themselves trapped in holes and unable to get out. The chapter relates the problems involved in rescuing them. The next chapter humorously relates the difficulties involved with seizing stray male dogs that are enamored by bitches in heat. Chapter eleven is about the appearance of a very unusual visitor to Dutchess County that is definitely not indigenous to the area. This chapter contains documentation of the numerous sightings of this animal. The following chapter informs the reader as to what constitutes cruelty to animals whether by abuse or neglect.

Book excerpt: "Enter the intense world of both the dogs and people who form the K9 corps. Every dog has its own unique personality." —Temple Grandin, author of Animals in Translation and Animals Make us Human An acclaimed poet, Rachel Rose never expected to spend her nights careening along the roads in high-speed chases or searching the woods for armed suspects. Yet once she decided to meet the people who devoted their lives to police K9 units, she found herself signing up for the ride-alongs, training runs, and other challenges that these courageous people–and canines–face on a daily basis. In The Dog Lover Unit, Rose introduces readers to police dogs and their handlers in the United States, Canada, Britain, and France (where their group's official name translates as "the dog lover unit"). She’s there to catch a criminal with Constable Matt Noel and Blackie; to patrol with Sheriff Gene Davis and Gunner; and to witness the tragic funeral of Constable Dave Ross, where K9 Danny follows the coffin, looking for his master. With insight, humor, and awe, this book reveals the feats that these human and canine teams accomplish, and the emotional and physical risks that they take for one another, and for us.

Download or read book Soldier Dogs written by Maria Goodavage and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading reporter offers a tour of military working dogs' extraordinary training, heroic accomplishments, and the lasting impacts they have on those who work with them. People all over the world have been riveted by the story of Cairo, the Belgian Malinois who was a part of the Navy SEAL team that led the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound. A dog's natural intelligence, physical abilities, and pure loyalty contribute more to our military efforts than ever before. You don't have to be a dog lover to be fascinated by the idea that a dog-the cousin of that furry guy begging for scraps under your table-could be one of the heroes who helped execute the most vital and high-tech military mission of the new millennium. Now Maria Goodavage, editor and featured writer for one of the world's most widely read dog blogs, tells heartwarming stories of modern soldier dogs and the amazing bonds that develop between them and their handlers. Beyond tales of training, operations, retirement, and adoption into the families of fallen soldiers, Goodavage talks to leading dog-cognition experts about why dogs like nothing more than to be on a mission with a handler they trust, no matter how deadly the IEDs they are sniffing, nor how far they must parachute or rappel from aircraft into enemy territory. "Military working dogs live for love and praise from their handlers," says Ron Aiello, president of the United States War Dogs Association and a former marine scout dog handler. "The work is all a big game, and then they get that pet, that praise. They would do anything for their handler." This is an unprecedented window into the world of these adventurous, loving warriors.

Book excerpt: Like their human friends, dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are smart, like Ma-Buku, a five-pound Chihuahua who squeaks her toy in perfect time with her owners drums. Some refuse to adhere to dog clichés, like four-year-old Elmer, who loves to chase a tennis ball but refuses to pick it up and bring it back, or six-year-old Barnabas, who can’t be bothered to chase cats but will bark vehemently at the wind. There are pretty dogs, heroic dogs, and dogs that are loyal, intuitive, or just plain strange, like Bocci, who goes into a trance when his owner’s pager goes off, and can only be "reset" by being picked up and put back down again. All make an appearance in this delightful collection of stories. Submitted by hundreds of real dog owners, these true tales of mutual love and loyalty affirm that there’s no better friend than a dog.

I have been a K-9 police dog for almost my entire life. It's too bad my brain is the size of a walnut, cause it doesn't allow me to speak. But nevertheless, I've got a lot to say. So when you see a police dog, take a good look into his eyes. Watch his body language. Even his inquisitive head tilt. I am going to tell you what thoughts are going through their head. Now, I do have a mother, so I better say this. Please pardon my foul mouth. I work as a police officer, and my words can get a little crude. Or let's say primitive, maybe even vulgar. Mom would say unrefined. So just a heads up on the cursing. And about that looking a police dog in the eyes thing. You stare too long, he's gonna bite you in the ass.

Book excerpt: For generations, The Koehler Method of Dog Training has been a beacon of wisdom for dog owners seeking effective techniques to build a strong bond with their furry companions. William Koehler’s approach, rooted in respect for dogs’ intelligence, remains as relevant today as it was when the book first graced the shelves. Koehler believed that dogs could make choices and be held accountable for their behavior. Correcting behavior becomes fair, reasonable, and expected once the training has been successfully imparted. In this classic guide, you’ll find practical guidance for creating a well-behaved and happy canine companion. From basic obedience to advanced skills, The Koehler Method covers it all.
