Book excerpt: So why do we bother to set goals and make plans for our future? Let me share with you how my life was changed when I started to seriously look at how I was spending my time. After reading the book by Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life, I saw that God really had a plan for me and that I could live a life that would give me purpose, I started setting goals and planning. I had done some planning before that, but this time I was serious about trusting and believing that God could do much more in my life than I could do on my own. I made a list thinking only about my heart's desire, writing down anything that I could think of that I would like see happen in my life and spending time really evaluating what motivated me. Have you stopped your busy life and thought about yourself and if you're living out your true purpose in this world?

Book A Long Bright Future

Download or read book A Long Bright Future written by Laura Carstensen and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century bequeathed us a fabulous gift: thirty more years of life on average. Supersized life spans are going to radically alter society, and present an unprecedented opportunity to change our approach not only to old age but to all of life's stages. The ramifications are just beginning to dawn on us.... yet in the meantime, we keep thinking about, and planning for, life as it used to be lived. In A Long Bright Future, longevity and aging expert Laura Carstensen guides us into the new possibilities offered by a longer life. She debunks the myths and misconceptions about aging that stop us from adequately preparing for the future both as individuals and as a society: that growing older is associated with loneliness and unhappiness, and that only the genetically blessed live well and long. She then focuses on other important components of a long life, including finances, health, social relationships, Medicare and Social Security, challenging our preconceived notions of "old age" every step of the way.

This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YOUR FUTURE BEGINS TODAY You can dream it. You can plan it. You can try to make it happen. But you can never really prepare for the future unless you have a future-focused mindset. That is the underlying message behind the inspiring words and wisdom of Peter Drucker, the legendary "father of modern management." Drucker believed that the future must be created--day by day, person by person--rather than be left to chance or fate. This powerful book by Drucker scholar and author Bruce Rosenstein incorporates the master's time-tested principles into a step-by-step daily plan that will change your life forever. Starting right now, you can: Create a future-focused mindset. Learn how to build a better tomorrow by taking steps today. Determine the future by what has already happened. Look for clues in the past to forecast the future. Become your own successor. Keep yourself in demand and in control of your destiny. Shape the future of your organization. Go beyond the planning stage and create real change. Build your future beyond your current workplace. Identify challenges and opportunities in all aspects of your life. Whether you're a recent college graduate faced with a difficult job market, an ambitious entrepreneur trying to anticipate the Next Big Thing, or a struggling executive weathering a storm of constant global change, Drucker's surprisingly timely approach to the future will guide you through anything the world throws at you. You'll discover creative techniques for rolling with the punches and landing on your feet, open-minded strategies for turning your ideas into action, and the latest tools for adapting to new technologies like social media and Internet marketing. You'll find inspiring advice and insights drawn from personal interviews with Drucker himself and some of the greatest business leaders of our time. Most importantly, you'll develop your own exciting, forwardthinking approach to the future that will dramatically alter your life, inside and outside the office. This is how you take charge of your destiny. This is how you make your dreams come true. This is how to Create Your Future the Peter Drucker Way. PRAISE FOR CREATE YOUR FUTURE THE PETER DRUCKER WAY: "Rosenstein skillfully draws on both his own wisdom and that of his mentor to deliver a plan for individuals and businesses in creating a future rich in personal and professional success. The book has expanded my understanding of Drucker's work and I'm confident it will do the same for you." -- CHIP CONLEY, founder and former CEO of Joie de Vivre Hospitality; author of New York Times bestseller Emotional Equations "Rosenstein has opened the door to an important and often misunderstood area of Drucker's work--why an understanding of the future is so critical for our development as leaders. It confirms my belief of a bright future ahead." -- FRANCES HESSELBEIN, President and CEO, The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute "In this concise and compelling book, Rosenstein provides a unique contribution: mining the nuggets of Peter Drucker's most important work about the future and presenting them in a brief, accessible format. Book excerpt: A behavioral scientist explores love, belongingness, and fulfillment, focusing on how modern technology can both help and hinder our need to connect. A Next Big Idea Club nominee. Millions of people around the world are not getting the physical, emotional, and intellectual intimacy they crave. Through the wonders of modern technology, we are connecting with more people more often than ever before, but are these connections what we long for? Pandemic isolation has made us even more alone. In Out of Touch, Professor of Psychology Michelle Drouin investigates what she calls our intimacy famine, exploring love, belongingness, and fulfillment and considering why relationships carried out on technological platforms may leave us starving for physical connection. Drouin puts it this way: when most of our interactions are through social media, we are taking tiny hits of dopamine rather than the huge shots of oxytocin that an intimate in-person relationship would provide. Drouin explains that intimacy is not just sex—although of course sex is an important part of intimacy. But how important? Drouin reports on surveys that millennials (perhaps distracted by constant Tinder-swiping) have less sex than previous generations. She discusses pandemic puppies, professional cuddlers, the importance of touch, “desire discrepancy” in marriage, and the value of friendships. Online dating, she suggests, might give users too many options; and the internet facilitates “infidelity-related behaviors.” Some technological advances will help us develop and maintain intimate relationships—our phones, for example, can be bridges to emotional support. Some, on the other hand, might leave us out of touch. Drouin explores both of these possibilities.

Book excerpt: Scientific advances mean that you're likely to live longer and more healthily than any generation before you. Here is the plan to help you prepare for and enjoy added years of life. What if we could have 30 extra years, but spend them as productively as the years that preceded them? The story of "old age" ceases to be. And the story of long life begins... Most babies born today could grow up in families with five generations alive at the same time. In the next 20 years, one in four Americans will be over 65. 88 percent of those aged 65 to 74 are healthy enough to work. If the majority of people worked a few years longer, Social Security would not only survive in the short term, it would be fully there for our grandchildren. 76 million Baby Boomers will be moving into the Medicare system. Making their voices heard about this flawed system could be their most lasting legacy. So start planning for your future self. Maybe you'll help raise your grandchildren, mentor or teach, or maybe you'll be part of the movement to fix what's wrong with Social Security or Medicare. The opportunity to rethink life's stages is yours. Are you ready? Book jacket.

Book The For the War Yet to Come

Download or read book The For the War Yet to Come written by Hiba Bou Akar and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Through elegant ethnography and nuanced theorization . . . gives us a new way of thinking about violence, development, modernity, and ultimately, the city.” —Ananya Roy, University of California, Los Angeles Beirut is a city divided. Following the Green Line of the civil war, dividing the Christian east and the Muslim west, today hundreds of such lines dissect the city. For the residents of Beirut, urban planning could hold promise: a new spatial order could bring a peaceful future. But with unclear state structures and outsourced public processes, urban planning has instead become a contest between religious-political organizations and profit-seeking developers. Neighborhoods reproduce poverty, displacement, and urban violence. For the War Yet to Come examines urban planning in three neighborhoods of Beirut’s southeastern peripheries, revealing how these areas have been developed into frontiers of a continuing sectarian order. Hiba Bou Akar argues these neighborhoods are arranged, not in the expectation of a bright future, but according to the logic of “the war yet to come”: urban planning plays on fears and differences, rumors of war, and paramilitary strategies to organize everyday life. As she shows, war in times of peace is not fought with tanks, artillery, and rifles, but involves a more mundane territorial contest for land and apartment sales, zoning and planning regulations, and infrastructure projects. Winner of the Anthony Leeds Prize “Upends our conventional notions of center and periphery, of local and transnational, even of war and peace.” —AbdouMaliq Simone, Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity “Fascinating, theoretically astute, and empirically rich.” —Asef Bayat, University of Illinois — Urbana-Champaign “An important contribution.” —Christine Mady, International Journal of Middle East Studies
