Book Physiological Genetics of Contrasting Loblolly and Slash Pine Families and Clones

Download or read book Physiological Genetics of Contrasting Loblolly and Slash Pine Families and Clones written by Veronica Ingrid Emhart and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic and environmental correlations of stem growth with [Delta]13C or with crown conductance were low. There was no evidence of clone-by-year interaction in stem growth, basal-area growth phenology, and [Delta]13C for any family. Understanding the biology of physiological processes and their genetic parameters gives us insight into the key functional and structural traits that determine genotype performance differences in southern pines.

Book Genetic Effects of Rooting Ability and Early Growth Traits in Loblolly Pine Clones

Download or read book Genetic Effects of Rooting Ability and Early Growth Traits in Loblolly Pine Clones written by Brian Stephen Baltunis and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Loblolly pine is the most important commercial tree species in the southern United States with over 1.1 billion seedlings planted annually. With elite genotypes becoming available, several forest industry companies in the southeastern United States are developing rooted cutting and somatic embryogenesis programs aiming towards deployment of tested clones or families. However, before clones can be deployed, sufficient data need to be collected on the population in order to have reliable information about the clones for deployment decisions. This dissertation reports on the genetic effects of rooting ability and early growth traits in nearly 2,200 clones of loblolly pine from 70-full-sib families.

Book Assessing Assisted Migration as a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Ontario s Forests

Download or read book Assessing Assisted Migration as a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Ontario s Forests written by Ngaire Eskelin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assisted migration of tree species populations, or seed sources, is one of few adaptive strategies available to mitigate the projected effects of climate change on the structure, productivity, and distribution of forest ecosystems. In this report, the authors present the goals and objectives of a study intiated in 2008 to assess the potential of assisted migration as an adaptation strategy to manage for climate change in Ontario. In support of this study, they conducted a literature search on assisted migration and genetic variation in climatic response of forest tree species, through which were identified several hundred related scientific and technical publications. Citations and keywords for publications of greatest significance to using assisted migration as a climate change adaptation strategy are presented in the accompanying bibliography.--Document.

Book Forest Genomics and Biotechnology

Download or read book Forest Genomics and Biotechnology written by Isabel Allona and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic addresses research in genomics and biotechnology to improve the growth and quality of forest trees for wood, pulp, biorefineries and carbon capture. Forests are the world’s greatest repository of terrestrial biomass and biodiversity. Forests serve critical ecological services, supporting the preservation of fauna and flora, and water resources. Planted forests also offer a renewable source of timber, for pulp and paper production, and the biorefinery. Despite their fundamental role for society, thousands of hectares of forests are lost annually due to deforestation, pests, pathogens and urban development. As a consequence, there is an increasing need to develop trees that are more productive under lower inputs, while understanding how they adapt to the environment and respond to biotic and abiotic stress. Forest genomics and biotechnology, disciplines that study the genetic composition of trees and the methods required to modify them, began over a quarter of a century ago with the development of the first genetic maps and establishment of early methods of genetic transformation. Since then, genomics and biotechnology have impacted all research areas of forestry. Genome analyses of tree populations have uncovered genes involved in adaptation and response to biotic and abiotic stress. Genes that regulate growth and development have been identified, and in many cases their mechanisms of action have been described. Genetic transformation is now widely used to understand the roles of genes and to develop germplasm that is more suitable for commercial tree plantations. However, in contrast to many annual crops that have benefited from centuries of domestication and extensive genomic and biotechnology research, in forestry the field is still in its infancy. Thus, tremendous opportunities remain unexplored. This Research Topic aims to briefly summarize recent findings, to discuss long-term goals and to think ahead about future developments and how this can be applied to improve growth and quality of forest trees.
