Book Predicting the Effects of Freezing and Thawing on Pavement Support

Download or read book Predicting the Effects of Freezing and Thawing on Pavement Support written by Craig H. Benson and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to develop a method to predict the timing of weight limits on secondary highways in Wisconsin. Two types of weight limits are of interest: overloads when the pavement is frozen and weight restrictions during thawing and post-thawing recovery period. To meet this objective, three sections of secondary highways with flexible pavements were instrumented and monitored to determine how freezing, thawing, and post-thaw recovery affect pavement stiffness. Data collected from these sites were used to develop a computer model (UWFrost) that can be used to predict seasonal changes in the support capacity of pavements.

Book PCC Airfield Pavement Response During Thaw weakening Periods

Download or read book PCC Airfield Pavement Response During Thaw weakening Periods written by Vincent C. Janoo and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation is part of CRREUs on-going characterization of pavement performance in seasonal frost areas. As part of the research, CRREL conducted several field studies for the Federal Aviation Administration (FM) on the response of airport pavements during thaw-weakening periods at three civil airports in Wisconsin, where the design freezing index in the area was around 900 to 1100oC-days and frost penetration ranged between 1250 to 2000 mm. This study focused on the performance of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements during the spring thaw-weakening period. The sites were instrumented with subsurface thermocouples and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests were conducted during the spring thaw period at the center of the slab and across the joints. An analysis of the FWD data and backcalculation of the layer moduli using ILLIBACK and WESDEF was conducted. Unique relationships between the FWD deflections and the subgrade modulus and coefficient of subgrade reaction were obtained. Additional relationships were developed using the FWD deflections, PCC thickness and the horizontal tensile stress at the bottom of the PCC layer. A relationship between load transfer across joints and FWD deflections was also developed. On the basis of the relationships obtained in this study, a methodology for evaluating PCC pavements during spring thaw was developed. However, this methodology needs to be verified for other subgrade types and areas with other design freezing indices.

Book Roads and Airfields in Cold Regions

Download or read book Roads and Airfields in Cold Regions written by Ted S. Vinson and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This state-of-the-practice report on the design and development of roads and airfields is the eighth monograph in a series prepared by the Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Previous reports in the series covered such topics as frost action and its control embankment design, and arctic coastal processes. This book discusses such topics as: 1) Route-location/siting; 2) frost action; 3) design for permafrost conditions; 4) low temperature cracking; 5) maintenance; 6) use of geosynthetics; and 7) materials specifications and testing. This monograph contributes a substantial amount of new material to the Cold Regions Engineering series.

Book Predicting the Behavior of Asphalt Concrete Pavements in Seasonal Frost Areas Using Nondestructive Techniques

Download or read book Predicting the Behavior of Asphalt Concrete Pavements in Seasonal Frost Areas Using Nondestructive Techniques written by Vincent C. Janoo and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four different pavement test sections were subjected to freeze-thaw cycling in CRREL's Frost Effects Research Facility (FERF). The test sections, each 610 cm in length, consisted of 1) 15.2 cm of asphalt concrete pavement over a clay subgrade, 2) 15.2 cm of asphalt concrete over 10.2 cm of crushed gravel over a clay subgrade, 3) 5.1 cm of asphalt concrete over 17.8 cm of crushed gravel over 20.3 cm of clean sand over a clay subgrade, and 4) 5.1 cm of asphalt concrete over 25.4 cm of crushed gravel over 12.7 cm of clean sand over a clay subgrade. Thermocouples were imbedded throughout the pavement structure and subgrade. During the thawing periods, deflection measurements were made at four locations in each test section using a Dynatest Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). The results of the deflection measurements are presented here. An analysis was done to quantify the subgrade strength based solely on FWD measurements. It was also shown that a relationship existed between thaw depth and FWD measurement in the subgrade.
