Book Latino Pentecostals in America

Download or read book Latino Pentecostals in America written by Gastón Espinosa and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “excellent study” of the Latino Pentecostal movement is “an important resource for understanding the future of Christianity in North America” (Choice). Every year an estimated 600,000 U.S. Latinos convert from Catholicism to Protestantism, a transformation spearheaded by the Pentecostal movement and Assemblies of God. Latino Assemblies of God leaders—and their 2,400 churches across the nation—represent a new and growing force in denominational, Evangelical, and presidential politics. In a deeply researched social and cultural history, Gastón Espinosa uncovers the roots and contemporary developments of this remarkable turn. Latino Pentecostals in America traces the Latino AG back more than a century, to the Azusa Street Revivals in Los Angeles and Apostolic Faith Revivals in Houston from 1906 to 1909. Espinosa describes the uphill struggles for indigenous leadership, racial equality, women in the ministry, social and political activism, and immigration reform. Their outspoken commitment to an active faith has led a new generation of leaders to combine the reconciling message of Billy Graham with the social transformation politics of Martin Luther King Jr. This eye-opening study explains why this group of working-class Latinos once called "the Silent Pentecostals" is silent no more. By giving voice to their untold story, Espinosa enriches our understanding of the diversity of Latino religion, Evangelicalism, and American culture.

Book Spirit Pathos and Liberation

Download or read book Spirit Pathos and Liberation written by Samuel Solivan and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of the Pentecostal movement is often most evident among the poor and disenfranchised of society, as, for example, among the Hispanic-American community. As this community continues to develop, will Pentecostal theology be able to incorporate into its hermeneutics those issues that especially concern it? Solivan looks at relevant issues to this debate from a Hispanic-American perspective, presenting an overview of Hispanic diversity, and its common roots and struggles. He talks of four critical issues in Hispanic theology (religious experience, suffering, the work of the Holy Spirit and the importance of language and culture) and other issues including acculturation and assimilation. He shows how a community's suffering and oppression can be transformed by the Holy Spirit into a liberating life, full of hope and promise.

Book Essentials of Pentecostal Theology

Download or read book Essentials of Pentecostal Theology written by Tony Richie and published by Resource Publications (CA). This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a few decades past, academia tended to scoff at the very idea of serious Pentecostal theology. Today profound and variegated theological implications of this dynamic movement are the object of exploration and development across the entire spectrum of the Christian theological corpus. Arguably, an acute need has arisen for identification and evaluation of the Pentecostal movement's original and ongoing theological ""essentials."" What is Pentecostal theology really all about anyway? This volume realizes that Pentecostal theology is at its heart a working theology undergirding and energizing believers' worship of God in prayer and praise, in holy living, and in witness to a personal experience of the risen Lord and Savior manifested in the continuing power of the Holy Spirit. Authentic implementation, if not explicit articulation, of fervent Pentecostal theology often occurs in the vitality of local churches, house fellowships, and various mission settings in America and around the world. Birthed in the fires of revival movements, essential Pentecostalism, including Pentecostal theology, continues to burn brightest wherever it is fueled most directly.

Book What Does it Mean to the Leadership of the Assemblies of God Latin America to be Pentecostal

Download or read book What Does it Mean to the Leadership of the Assemblies of God Latin America to be Pentecostal written by Dennis Seler and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pentecostal Church in Latin America has experienced extraordinary growth. With its development across a multiplicity of countries and groups one cannot speak of a single description encompassing Pentecostal expression and life. It would be more accurate to speak of “Pentecostalisms.” This study describes from a Latin American Assemblies of God view point what it means to be “Pentecostal.” This study explores the meaning of being “Pentecostal,” and considers the theological implications and the praxis of being “Pentecostal” within the context of Latin America. The history of the Pentecostal faith in Latin America as well as social science literature are reviewed. The study utilizes Q-Methodology to ascertain what the understanding of the Latin American leadership of the Assemblies of God Pentecostal looks like theologically and in praxis. Members of FRAHMAD—Fraternidad Hispana Mundial de las Asambleas de Dios (Global Hispanic Fraternity of the Assemblies of God) ranked fortynine statements considering the meaning of being “Pentecostal.” In addition, a sampling of North Americans who fit the characteristics of new missionaries going to Latin America serving as a comparison group did the same. The research revealed that for the Latin American leadership of the Assemblies of God being “Pentecostal,” above all else, is to experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit with accompanying tongues. This baptism further holds to global evangelism through Spirit-led and Spirit-empowered ministry. The US participants hold the view that the baptism of the Spirit brings a believer a greater personal and corporate (church) development. They did not rank tongues at the same priority and did not connect the baptism to evangelism as strongly as the Latin Americans. The groups benefiting from the research include national church leaders (Latin America and USA), missionaries, pastors and Bible School teachers. Those outside of this defined arena would have much to glean as well. This study provides an analysis of the views of both the Latin Americans and the North Americans informing the reader of each groups respective understanding of what it means to be “Pentecostal.” This study interacts with what the New Testament Literature offers as to what it means to be “Pentecostal.” It responds to how the contextual factors inform what it means to be “Pentecostal.”
