Book excerpt: This book was born from the belief that, in an era of narrowly specialized experts, looking beyond the arbitrary borders on one's own field offered the only chance for intellectual survival. The spectacular growth of economics in the past forty years or so has been accompanied by the rapid fragmentation process that seems to characterize the making of any science. If we chose to view this as a symptom of scientific maturity, we would be tempted to welcome this process. But, as economists, we should think of its opportunity cost. In one sense this work attempts to assess the price we have chosen to pay - consciously or not - to win recognition of our scientific status from other disciplines. If, after going through this book, the reader comes out with the feeling that this shadow price is not all shadow after all, we will have achieved one of our goals! Both the merits and defects of this book stem from the fact that we tried to pursue a different approach in the study of economics. This line of thought originates in the area of pattern recognition and machine learn ing. For the past two decades, a number of applied mathematicans, logicians, and engineers have systematically tried to mimic human intelli gence in one of its most important functions viz. that of identifying and recognizing patterns in an a priori unorganized and confusing environment.

The first section covers a broad spectrum of pattern recognition methodologies, including geometric, statistical, fuzzy set, syntactic, graph-theoretic and hybrid approaches. Its cove,r age of hybrid methods places the volume in a unique position among existing books on pattern recognition. The second section provides an extensive treatment of the topical problem of image understanding from both the artificial intelligence and pattern recognition points of view. The two application sections demonstrate the usefulness of the novel methodologies in traditional pattern 'recognition application areas. They address the problems of hardware/software implementation and of algorithm robustness, flexibility and general reliability. The final section reports on a panel discussion held during the Institute.

In this context, human behaviour will certainly change its 'fixed' parameters. It is likely that the relationships between internal structures and external influences, between individual components and collective behaviour, as well as between multi-scale networks and interrelated dynamics, will show spatio-temporal patterns which will be difficult to predict by means of our usual tools. As a consequence, academic research is increasingly being required to play an active role in addressing new ways of understanding and forecasting the sets of interacting structures, ranging from the technical to the organizational, and from the social to the economic and political levels, while at the same time incorporating concerns about the 'new' economy, environment, society, information and technology. It is now evident that social science - especially spatial and economic scienc- needs innovative 'paths', together with continuous cross-fertilization among the many disciplines involved. In order to investigate these intriguing perspectives, we seem to have embarked on an era of methodological reflections - rather than developing strong theoretical foundations. This volume aims to provide an overview of these new insights and frontiers for theoretical/methodological studies and research applications in the space-economy.

INTRODUCTION 5 While there are several other problems relating to the analysis of areal data, the problem of estimating a spatial correlO!J'am merits special attention. The concept of the correlogram has been borrowed in the spatial literature from the time series analysis. Figure l. 4. a shows the first-order neighbours of a reference area, while Figure 1. 4. b displays the second-order neighbours of the same area. Higher-order neighbours can be defined in a similar fashion. While it is clear that the dependence is strongest between immediate neighbouring areas a certain degree of dependence may be present among higher-order neighbours. This has been shown to be an alternative way of look ing at the sca le problem (Cliff and Ord, 1981, p. l 23). However, unlike the case of a time series where each observation depends only on past observations, here dependence extends in all directions.
