Book excerpt: This Integrated Fisheries Management Plan will be in effect from 2003 onward. The fishery is based primarily on a single species, Pandalus borealis (northern or pink shrimp), one of several cold water species of shrimp found north of latitude 40ʻ N in the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans. A second species, Pandalus montagui (striped shrimp), is commercially less important, but is fished exclusively in shrimp fishing areas (SFAs) 2, 3 and 4 (as defined in the fishing licence) and occurs as by-catch elsewhere in the P. borealis fishery. Increased commercial interest in the P. montagui species began in 2002 with a 2,500t exploratory quota being allocated to the NWMB across SFAs 2 and 3 inside the Nunavut Settlement Area (NSA).

Book excerpt: This document provides interim updates of northern shrimp assessments performed from southern Davis Strait to the north-east Newfoundland Shelf, corresponding to shrimp fishing areas 2, 4, 5 & 6. The status of the shrimp resource in each area was inferred, in part, by examining trends in commercial catch, effort, catch per unit effort, fishing pattern, and size/sex/age composition of the catches. A multi-species research trawl survey conducted in fall 2002 provided information on distribution, abundance, biomass, size, sex composition, and age structure of shrimp in Cartwright Channels and in Hawke Channel & the Shelf. The findings are compared with results of previous surveys in these areas.

Not included in this review are P. borealis in Division 0A (SFA 1) and Flemish Cap (SFA 7), which are assessed by Scientific Council of NAFO. Also, Pandalus montagui, which are fished commercially in SFA's 2, 3 and 4, west of 63° W, were not considered because there was no new information on stock size or exploitation levels to use in assessing status of the resource or revising the TAC from its current levels (3800 tons).

[...] RESOURCE STATUS The issues of survey timing, change in ship, missing sets in the southeast cause us to be cautious about the interpretation of the research survey results in 2001 and 2002. [...] In 2000, the additional 3,500 tons was not included in the quota report, and accordingly the catch was not counted against the TAC for the south (5,250 tons).
