Book Evaluation of the Relative Importance of Circumferential Or Creeping Waves in the Acoustic Scattering from Rigid and Elastic Solid Cylinders and from Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Evaluation of the Relative Importance of Circumferential Or Creeping Waves in the Acoustic Scattering from Rigid and Elastic Solid Cylinders and from Cylindrical Shells written by Louis R. Dragonette and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship is determined between predicted circumferential waves on cylinders and the normal-mode series solution for the acoustic scattering by submerged metal cylinders. Specific circumferential waves are linked to the free modes of vibration of the cylinder, and this identification is used to experimentally detect the Rayleigh surface wave at low ka. Circumferential waves on thin cylindrical shells are demonstrated to closely follow prediction based on Lamb theory for flat plates. (Author).

Book Acoustic Interactions With Submerged Elastic Structures Part I Acoustic Scattering And Resonances

Download or read book Acoustic Interactions With Submerged Elastic Structures Part I Acoustic Scattering And Resonances written by Ardeshir Guran and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of acoustic fields with submerged elastic structures, both by propagation and scattering, is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories world-wide with ever-increasing sophistication of experiments and analysis. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the present state-of-the-art in the study of acoustic elastic interaction, being on the cutting edge of these investigations. This includes the description of acoustic scattering from submerged elastic objects and shells by the Resonance Scattering Theory of Flax, Dragonette and Überall, and the interaction of these phenomena in terms of interface waves. It also includes the use of this theory for the purpose of inverse scattering, i.e. the determination of the scattered objects properties from the received acoustic backscattered signals. The problem of acoustically excited waves in inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials, and of inhomogeneous propagating waves is considered. Vibrations and resonances of elastic shells, including shells with various kinds of internal attachments, are analyzed. Acoustic scattering experiments are described in the time domain, and on the basis of the Wigner-Ville distribution. Acoustic propagation in the water column over elastic boundaries is studied experimentally both in laboratory tanks, and in the field, and is analyzed theoretically. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing, including such aspects like probe modelling, scattering by various types of cracks, receiving probes and calibration by a side-drilled hole is also studied in details.A comprehensive picture of these complex phenomena and other aspects is presented in the book by researchers that are experts in each of these domains, giving up-to-date accounts of the field in all these aspects.

Book excerpt: These 13 papers were part of a May 1989 symposium at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., the home of much of the early theoretical and experimental work in acoustic resonance scattering. Topics include a historical survey of the development of the subject, a description of the MIIR and short- pulse methods, and new developments such as the derivation of exact acoustic background shells, application of the method of moments, and S-matrix product expansions. Book Underwater Scattering and Radiation

Download or read book Underwater Scattering and Radiation written by Allan D. Pierce and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater Scattering and Radiation describes the relevant theoretical foundations of underwater scattering and radiation. Acoustic scattering from elastic solids is discussed, and variational formulations in acoustic radiation and scattering are presented. Surface waves and quasi-cylindrical modes are also explored, along with the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral corollaries. Comprised of two chapters, this volume begins with a comprehensive account of scattering by elastic objects, focusing on the classic idealized shapes of spheres and infinite cylinders. The reader is introduced to important concepts such as normal modes, the S-matrix, and the T-matrix as well as resonances, whispering gallery modes, Franz modes, and Stoneley waves. Subsequent sections describe methods for treating scattering by elastic bodies of more general shapes. The T-matrix formalism is discussed and then applied to spheroidal scatterers and finite cylinders. The second chapter analyzes how variational principles can be used in acoustics, with the choice of topics directed toward applications to underwater acoustic radiation and scattering. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Book Elastic Wave Propagation

Download or read book Elastic Wave Propagation written by F. McCarthy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a timely collection of research papers on the latest developments in the ever-increasing use of elastic waves in a variety of contexts. There are reports on wave-propagation in various types of media: in both isotropic and anisotropic bodies; in homogeneous and inhomogeneous media; in media with cracks or inclusions in random media; and in layered composites. The bulk of the papers are concerned with propagation in elastic media, but also included are viscoelastic, thermoelastic and magneto-electroelastic wave propagation, as well as waves in porous and piezo-electric bodies. Consideration is given to propagation in bodies as diverse as stretched elastic strings to surfaces such as thin walled cylinders, and thin films under stress. Applications considered include the determination of the depth of cracks; analysis of ground motions generated by a finite fault in seismology; surface wave spreading on piezo-electric solids; and dynamical stress intensity factors. Most of the papers are theoretical in nature, and many are complemented by numerical studies. Also included are a general survey on experimental techniques, and reports on experimental work. The volume will be of interest to those who do theoretical studies of elastic wave propagation and to those who apply elastic waves whether in seismology, non-destructive testing, the fabrication of devices or underwater acoustics, etc.

Book Resonance Acoustic Spectroscopy

Download or read book Resonance Acoustic Spectroscopy written by Naum D. Veksler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resonance Acoustic Spectroscopy deals with the analysis of waves generated in an elastic body by a plane harmonic acoustic wave. It is the first monograph to treat new analytical and experimental methods for the investigation of the excitation, propagation and re-radiation of elastic waves in solid, thick-walled and thin-walled elastic scatterers. The material is presented systematically, comprising the formulation of the problem, method of solution, algorithm, computation and analysis. A large number of computational results are given in the form of modal resonances, form functions, dispersion curves and acoustic spectrograms. Particular attention is paid to the interpretation of the solutions.
