Book Nidrstigningar Saga

Download or read book Nidrstigningar Saga written by Dario Bullitta and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evangelium Nicodemi, or Gospel of Nicodemus, was the most widely circulated apocryphal writing in medieval Europe. It depicted the trial, Passion, and crucifixion of Christ as well as his Harrowing of Hell. During the twelfth-century renaissance, some exemplars of the Evangelium Nicodemi found their way to Iceland where its text was later translated into the vernacular and known as Niðrstigningar saga. Dario Bullitta has embarked on a highly fascinating voyage that traces the routes of transmission of the Latin text to Iceland and continental Scandinavia. He argues that the saga is derived from a less popular twelfth-century French redaction of the Evangelium Nicodemi, and that it bears the exegetical and scriptural influences of twelfth-century Parisian scholars active at Saint Victor, Peter Comestor and Peter Lombard in particular. By placing Niðrstigningar saga within the greater theological and homiletical context of early thirteenth-century Iceland, Bullitta successfully adds to our knowledge of the early reception of Latin biblical and apocryphal literature in medieval Iceland and provides a new critical edition and translation of the vernacular text.

Book The Legends of the Saints in Old Norse Icelandic Prose

Download or read book The Legends of the Saints in Old Norse Icelandic Prose written by Kirsten Wolf and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saints’ legends form a substantial portion of Old Norse–Icelandic literature, and can be found in more than four hundred manuscripts or fragments of manuscripts dating from shortly before the twelfth century to the 1700s. With The Legends of the Saints in Old Norse–Icelandic Prose, Kirsten Wolf has undertaken a complete revision of the fifty-year-old handlist The Lives of the Saints in Old Norse Prose. This updated handlist organizes saints’ names, manuscripts, and editions of individual lives with references to the approximate dates of the manuscripts, as well as modern Icelandic editions and translations. Each entry concludes with secondary literature about the legend in question. These features combine to make The Legends of the Saints in Old Norse–Icelandic Prose an invaluable resource for scholars and students in the field.

Book Trollru n

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-06-21

Download or read book Trollru n written by Nicholaj De Mattos Frisvold and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In TROLLRÚN: A Discourse on Trolldom and Runes in the Northern Tradition, Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold opens the door to landscapes little known outside of Scandinavia. These landscapes are populated by mythical beings and land spirits which offer a quite different approach to the Northern Tradition than what is usual. Here the Aesir have taken a backseat in favour of discussions on the wider tapestry of Northern wisdom, such as trolldom, seidr and the legacy left by the Black Books of magic under the larger theme of 'What the Trolls Told', comprising the first part of TROLLRÚN. This is followed by a presentation of the Elder runes, runology, and rune magic, all rooted in Scandinavian ideas of the use of runes and their magic. TROLLRÚN views this landscape through the eyes of the cunning arts, where the ice, the frost, the midnight sun, and the majestic mountains and fjords become the orchestra of TROLLRÚN's wisdom, drenched in the powerful atmosphere of the magical north.
