Book High Speed Catamarans and Multihulls

Download or read book High Speed Catamarans and Multihulls written by Liang Yun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High speed catamaran and multihull high speed marine vessel have become very popular in the last two decades. The catamaran has become the vessel of choice for the majority of high speed ferry operators worldwide. There have been significant advances in structural materials, and structural design has been combined with higher power density and fuel efficient engines to deliver ferries of increasing size. The multihull has proven itself to be a suitable configuration for active power projection across oceans as well as for coastal patrol and protection, operating at high speedd for insertion or retrieval with a low energy capability. At present there is no easily accessible material covering the combination of hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and design issues including structures, powering and propulsion for these vehicles. Coverage in High Speed Catamarans and Multihulls includes an introduction to the history, evolution, and development of catamarans, followed by a theoretical calculation of wave resistance in shallow and deep water, as well as the drag components of the multihull. A discussion of vessel concept design describing design characteristics, empirical regression for determination of principal dimensions in preliminary design, general arrangement, and methods is also included. The book concludes with a discussion of experimental future vehicles currently in development including the small waterplane twin hull vessels, wave piercing catamarans, planing catamarans, tunnel planing catamarans and other multihull vessels.

Book excerpt: Robin G. Coles interviews James Brown about Multihulls; catamarans, trimarans, and proas. This was a two hour interview and chock-full of great stories. To learn more read about these top tips included:1. The real difference between multihulls and monohulls is people 2. One disadvantage is limited load carrying capacity. 3. A trimaran has one large central hull and two smaller outer or outrigger hulls. 4. A catamaran doesn't have a bow. 5. A catamaran's widely spaced hulls can straddle a wave crest. A trimaran's float, or outer hull, is not as far from the main hull as the two catamaran hulls are from each other, so there's less room to straddle in a trimaran. 6. The catamaran has to drag its two hulls through the tack. A trimaran, properly designed, only has to drag one hull through the tack. 7. Trimarans are better upwind--they communicate with the pilot in a more direct manner. 8. Trimarans are safer than catamarans.9. Proa has one main hull and only one smaller outrigger hull on one side of the boat, usually to windward.10. Hydrofoils are racing trimarans fitted with J, T, and/or ladder foils; hydrofoils are underwater wings that accomplish the same thing in water that airplane wings do in air.

Book Multihull Seamanship

Download or read book Multihull Seamanship written by Gavin Le Sueur and published by Fernhurst Books Limited. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an A-Z of seamanship skills for multihull sailors. There are many textbooks on the market which detail general seamanship principles. This is not one of them. Multihull Seamanship is about sea-going catamarans and trimarans and the skills needed to understand and enjoy them to their utmost. Both racing and cruising yachts are catered for, as are trailer-able multihulls. Seamanship is not a black and white skill. It is an evolution of knowledge; a building of information through experiment, thought and experience. There is no definitive word on an evolving skill. Multihull Seamanship started as Dr Gavin Le Sueur's personal index of 'how-to's. It has grown through experience and others sharing their knowledge. It should be on the book shelf of every catamaran and trimaran. This book is for people who are already multihull sailors, or for those who are contemplating multihull sailing. It has served this community for over 20 years and this second edition is fully updated. It is illustrated with delightful line drawings by Nigel Allison.

Book excerpt: A select group of world-class yachtsmen prepare for the Round-the-World Multihull Race, a test to determine not only the best go-fast design, but also who is the world's greatest skipper. The challengers have known each other through years of Grand Prix and Olympic sailing competitions. Ronny Kelly, amiable and clever Californian, Paoli Venuzzi, who secretly cheated Kelly out of the gold at the Barcelona Olympics, and the Frenchman Philippe Matin, holder of many cross-Atlantic speed records, emerge as the top contenders. Their efforts are bankrolled by a variety of international corporations plus a Mafia backed bank. The Mafia schemes to collect millions in gambling and drug peddling profits by pressuring their skipper to smuggle cocaine and arrange "accidents" during the race. As the race proceeds, the Mafia become more and more desperate to recoup their gambling losses and their attempts become much more than "accidents."

Book The Cruising Multihull

Download or read book The Cruising Multihull written by Chris White and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 1996-09-22 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long typecast as the hotrods of the sea--fast but dangerous--modern cruising multihulls actually are among the safest and most comfortable cruising sailboats available. Modern multihulls offer significant advantages over single-hull sailboats: They sail faster, have more living space, they're more comfortable, more stable, they can sail safely in much shallower water, and, because their stability comes from widely spaced hulls and not from tons of lead hung off the keel, they don't sink. Given the ultimate disaster, which would you choose: A capsized yet habitable boat, floating awash, or a self-righting boat sitting at the bottom of the ocean? And multihulls are fast. A typical weekend cruiser's circle of operations might double if he switches to a multihull. A transatlantic voyage might be cut by a third. No less an organization than the U.S. Navy decided that applications requiring an extremely steady platform at sea were best suited to, of all things, a catamaran. The Cruising Multihull supplies the reader with all the latest information about design, construction, rigs, seamanship, safety, and a point-by-point rebuttal of the "accepted wisdom" concerning multihull dangers. It will help you decide whether a multihull is right for you; which multihull--cat or tri--is best for your needs; whether you should build one yourself, have one built, or buy one off the rack. And, of course, The Cruising Multihull shows you how to get the most from your boat. "I don't know of a more thorough survey of modern cruising multihulls than this book. For strangers to these boats who want to know more about them, as well as for multihull sailors eager to learn from a capable, articulate designer and sailor with his own point of view, I enthusiastically recommend The Cruising Multihull."--John Rousmaniere "Finally, a multihull voice which does not proselytize. Instead, logic and information pack the pages of Chris White's . . . The Cruising Multihull."--WoodenBoat

Book Specificity and Designing of Multi Hull Ships and Boats

Download or read book Specificity and Designing of Multi Hull Ships and Boats written by Victor A. Dubrovsky and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The monograph presents the main results of the author's sixty-year activity in science and engineering fields regarding the application of various multi-hull ships. The shown data are based mainly on the wide experimental results of the author. For fullness of description, some problems are explained in brief by the experimental results of other authors whose names are shown in the text and references. The scope of topics includes a brief history of applications, a list of types, hydrostatics and stability, towing resistance and propulsion in calm water and high seas, seaworthiness, maneuverability, external loads, structural arrangements and strength, general arrangement, and proposed concept designs. The scope of architectural types encompasses the variety of multi-hull 'species' from catamarans to trimarans as well as the other triple-hull ships, and ships with a small water-plane area (SWA ships). The type and size of ship range from small fast crafts to large ferries, from passenger ships to transatlantic container-carriers, and from high-speed patrol boats to naval combat and auxiliary ships. This is a development of a kind of technical encyclopedia previously published as three books: Multi-hull Ships by V. Dubrovsky and A. Lyakhovitsky (2001), Ships with Outriggers, by V. Dubrovsky (2004), Ships with Small Water-Plane Area, by V. Dubrovsky, K. Matveev, S. Sutulo, with detailed explanations of the newest data. In this respect, the book is unique and the most universal one written in English today. A brief history of applications is given as the base for future developments. The introduction contains a list of ship types and full terminology. Chapter One describes the specificity of general arrangement. Chapter Two speaks of how stability and non-sinkability differ clearly from the same qualities of mono-hulls. Chapter Three delves into resistance in calm water (major specificity and its use, series test results of catamarans with low-lengthening hulls, and twin- and triple-hull SWA models). Chapter Four is about seakeeping and performance on high seas (specifics of motion and the universal method of comparative evaluation). Chapter Five teaches readers about controllability and maneuverability specificity. Chapter Six shows structural strength (external loads, hull girder stress analysis and design, and simplified methods). Chapter Seven deals with d esign (basic factors, specific design algorithms and limitations, some new concepts: super-fast wave-piercing trimaran; 'semi-gliding' ships with small water-plane area, S/P SWA ships, feeder and fast container-carriers, motor yachts, carriers of helicopters and unmanned aircraft; transatlantic container-carriers, cruise ships, passenger ships for unequipped coasts, ships for seismic researching, multi-purpose pleasure and inexpensive research vessels, some small-sized vessels, and combat ships from corvettes to aircraft-carriers). The book is addressed to all kinds of readers involved in the production and operation of ships, including owners, designers, naval architects, marine engineers, professors and students, as well as planning and ship-operating managers"--From publisher's website.

Book The Elements of Boat Strength For Builders Designers and Owners

Download or read book The Elements of Boat Strength For Builders Designers and Owners written by Dave Gerr and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 1999-08-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work is significant. It is the first to include a method of assessing structural strength in the context of the modern marine environment." --Commander M. C. Cruder, U.S. Coast Guard Acclaimed author and naval architect Dave Gerr created this unique system of easy-to-use scantling rules and rules-of-thumb for calculating the necessary dimensions, or scantlings, of hulls, decks, and other boat parts, whether built of fiberglass, wood, wood-epoxy composite, steel, or aluminum. In addition to the rules themselves, The Elements of Boat Strength offers their context: an in-depth, plain-English discussion of boatbuilding materials, methods, and practices that will guide you through all aspects of boat construction. Now you can avoid wading through dense technical engineering manuals or tackling advanced mathematics. The Elements of Boat Strength has all the formulas, tables, illustrations, and charts you need to judge how heavy each piece of your boat should be in order to last and be safe. With this book, an inexpensive scientific calculator, and a pad of paper, you'll be able to design and specify all the components necessary to build a sound, long-lasting, rugged vessel. What reviewers have said about Dave Gerr's books: Propeller Handbook "By far the best book available on the subject."--Sailing "The best layman's guide we've ever read."--Practical Sailor Dave Gerr and International Marine made a complicated topic understandable and put it into a handbook that is easy to use."--WoodenBoat "Without doubt the definitive reference for selecting, installing, and understanding boat propellers."--Royal Navy Sailing Association Journal The Nature of Boats "If you are not nautically obsessed before reading this book, you will most certainly be afterward."--Sailing Fascinating potpourri of information about today's boats, modern and traditional."--WoodenBoat
