Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal results of this technical note are graphical presentations of the attenuation rates, phase velocities, and excitation factors for the dominant modes in the earth-ionosphere waveguide. The frequency range considered is 8 kc/s to 30 kc/s. *The model adopted for the ionosphere has an exponential variation for both the electron density and the collision frequency, and the effect of the earth's magnetic field is considered.Comparison with published experimental data confirms that the minimum attenuation of VLF radio waves in daytime is approximtely at 18 kc/s, while at night it is somewhat lower. The directional dependences of propagation predicted by the theory are also confirmed by experimental data.(Author).

Book A Simplified Mode Conversion Program for VLF Propagation in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide

Download or read book A Simplified Mode Conversion Program for VLF Propagation in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide written by Richard A. Pappert and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a variation of an earlier mode conversion program for numerically determining mode conversion coefficients and mode sums for a waveguide which is inhomogeneous along the direction of propagation (invariance normal to the transmitter receiver line is assumed and reflections due to the horizontal inhomogeneity are neglected). Although somewhat more approximate than the earlier program the present version has the advantage of not requiring a full wave fields program for the height gain calculations and can be implemented with about the same ease as a WKB program. It has one advantage over the WKB formulation and that is that mode numbering along the horizontal inhomogeneity is immaterial. The mode conversion program will yield mode conversion coefficients and a mode sum plot for ground based vertical dipole excitation of the vertical electric field at the ground as a function of distance from the transmitter. Since the mode conversion coefficients are independent of transmitter terminator distance, allowance has also been made for incrementing the latter distance and plotting mode sums for the incremented distances.

Book Calculated Mode Conversion Coefficients for Graded Height Change in the Earth ionosphere Waveguide at VLF

Download or read book Calculated Mode Conversion Coefficients for Graded Height Change in the Earth ionosphere Waveguide at VLF written by Kenneth P. Spies and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a previous formulation, calculations are carried out for the modal conversion coefficients which arise in VLF waveguide propagation in an idealized transition between day and night. A sharply bounded isotropic ionosphere is employed and the transition region is approximated by a finite number of uniform sections of equal length. The relevance of the results to experimental data is discussed briefly. It is indicated that the observed conversion between modes of order one and two are consistent with the calculated results if the transition length for sunrise is of the order of 500 km.

Book Mode Conversion in the Earth ionosphere Waveguide

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate theory for conversion of modes in an earth-ionosphere waveguide is propounded. The model is two concentric spherical reflecting boundaries which have prescribed surface impedances. The localized irregularity at either the ground or the ionosphere is idealized by a 'black screen' which effectively blocks the cross-section of the waveguide over a portion of its area.In this sense, the method is a union of approximate Kirchoff diffraction theory and rigorous mode theory.(Author).

Book WKB Mode Summing Program for Dipole Antennas of Arbitrary Orientation and Elevation for VLF LF Propagation Calculation of VLF LF Field Strengths in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide

Download or read book WKB Mode Summing Program for Dipole Antennas of Arbitrary Orientation and Elevation for VLF LF Propagation Calculation of VLF LF Field Strengths in the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide written by J. A. Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program was developed for calculating vlf/lf field strengths in the earth-ionosphere waveguide whose characteristics may vary along the direction of propagation. The computer program described in this report is a modified version of that described in NELC Interim Report 713, WKB Mode Summing Program for VLF/LF Antennas of Arbitrary Length, Shape, and Elevation. Changes consist of an increase in the number of waveguide slabs from 25 to essentially an unlimited number, more convenient formatting of the input data, especially in the reduction from three to two cards per waveguide mode, an increase in the number of allowable modes from 15 to 30, and the addition of two new output options. This program is referred to as WKBFLDS or FLD4. Use of this program is recommended in instances where the characteristics of the earth or ionosphere vary slowly along the propagation path.

Book Propagation Characteristics of VLF Waves Below a Stratified and Generally Anisotropic Ionosphere

Download or read book Propagation Characteristics of VLF Waves Below a Stratified and Generally Anisotropic Ionosphere written by David W. Pidwell and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research constitutes one method of formulation for the calculation of very low frequency radio wave propagation characteristics of the earth-ionosphere waveguide. It involves a brief consideration of some general properties of the ionosphere which influence the propagation of VLF (very low frequencies) waves. In the analysis, the waveguide is the area formed by the earth and the lower conducting region of the ionosphere. The propagation characteristics are obtained from the solution of a modal equation which is formulated directly in terms of the reflection coefficients of both the ionosphere and earth. The coupled vacuum mode theory of Poeverlein is extended to include the earth's curvature effects by assuming the ionosphere as a cylindrical stratified medium. The modal equation is solved by an iterative procedure and propagation characteristics are obtained for a variety of ionospheric conditions for different directions of propagation. A comparison of the numerical results is made with different formulations in the literature. (Author).

Book VLF LF TE Mode Propagation Under Disturbed Ionospheric Conditions

Download or read book VLF LF TE Mode Propagation Under Disturbed Ionospheric Conditions written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report compares calculated attenuation rates for transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes propagating in the earth- ionosphere waveguide. Frequencies from 10 to 50 kHz are considered, and attention is restricted to situations where the fields can be represented in terms of the least-attenuated TM or TE mode. Nine model ionospheres corresponding to conditions caused by widespread high-altitude fission debris are used as inputs to the calculations. Certain of these models are also representative of polar-cap-absorption (PCA) events. The calculations utilize full-wave methods, and account for the vertical inhomogeneity of the ionosphere, the effects of heavy ions, and the curvature of the earth. In addition to the modal attenuation rates, results are given for field-strength height-profiles, plane-wave ionospheric reflection coefficients, and the relative importance of heavy ions vis-a-vis electrons.
