Book A Translation and Interpretation of Horace s Sermones Book I

Download or read book A Translation and Interpretation of Horace s Sermones Book I written by Andy Law and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace’s book of Sermones (also called Satires) was his first published work. Rather than a collection of satirical sideswipes, as the genre might have dictated, the book is a wiry, tight, muscular, interlaced hexameter artwork of enormous originality and as far removed from the legacy of satirical writing he inherited as one can imagine. It is the work of a 29-year-old grappling with issues of personal and poetic identity during one of the most important and pivotal times in European history. Geographically, socially and genetically an outsider, Horace earned himself a seat at Rome’s top creative table, close to the heart of the political engine that was to change Rome forever. His book details a transformational journey from ‘nobody’ to ‘somebody’, and is a simultaneous invention of poet and reinvention of poetic genre. Horace’s Sermones have floated in and out of fashion ever since they first appeared, regularly eclipsed by his Odes. Today, rehabilitated, they find space in the higher levels of the school curriculum. This book provides unique insights and will be of interest to all classicists, as well as students studying core influences on European literature.

Book Kindness and the Good Society

Download or read book Kindness and the Good Society written by William S. Hamrick and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2004 Edward Goodwin Ballard Book Prize in Phenomenology presented by the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology with interest from a fund raised from Professor Ballard's family, students, and friends Kindness and the Good Society utilizes phenomenology and a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional sources to provide the first comprehensive account of kindness in any genre of philosophy. Remarkably rich in descriptive detail and drawing upon a wide range of examples, including literary sources, current affairs, and traditional philosophical texts, Hamrick's book rescues kindness from the purposeful neglect of deontological and utilitarian ethical theories. Beginning with an account of the personal and social areas of ethical and moral comportment, Hamrick addresses what is not intuitively obvious about kindness and its opposite, details a critical kindness that avoids both naiveté as well as popular cynicism, and guides us toward a new notion of aesthetic humanism.

Book Love Your Neighbor

Download or read book Love Your Neighbor written by Ralph C. Stayer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love Your Neighbor makes the case for capitalism as the only system that can end poverty, solve intractable crises, and increase human flourishing. Love Your Neighbor builds on the National Best Seller Flight of the Buffalo by Ralph Stayer with James Belasco. Ralph's story and experience transformed the business world. It offers a bold and straightforward plan for rethinking leadership—still taught in business schools and leadership seminars worldwide. Finally, after decades of more experience, Love Your Neighbor delivers the sequel that readers demanded. Love Your Neighbor is the fruit of that patience—and thirty years of reflection and leadership. As the longtime CEO of Johnsonville Foods, Ralph learned to let his workers lead. Love Your Neighbor shows that the real secret behind Johnsonville's success was a conscious decision to align the company's practices with God's plan for human flourishing. Love Your Neighbor defends and champions capitalism which continues to be under attack in America—and why faith-informed capitalism is the only vehicle that can bring prosperity and purpose to everyone. Love Your Neighbor goes beyond that of another pretty sermon—it's a blueprint for transformation based on Ralph's decades of experience as one of America's most successful CEOs. It provides a moral foundation for capitalism during a time of challenge and crisis, demonstrating its vast superiority over socialism and other fallen economic systems. Ralph's experience at Johnsonville Foods points to a proud and unapologetic conviction in capitalism that serves God, builds strong communities, and embodies what it means to love your neighbor.

Book The Truth of Babri Mosque

Download or read book The Truth of Babri Mosque written by Ashok Pant and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word Babri was literally used to define something abnormal, out of sense or mad. Three instances mentioned in Babar-Nama support this. Babars journal is replete with precise detail with a telling image or idiom as a bud resembling a sheeps heart, fell like water on fire which lingers in the readers mind long after the event or anecdote has receded. Few of the phrases and words in the Babar Nama are now part of everyday language in India and Pakistan as Namak Haram means lack of trustworthiness, hamesha means always, bakhshish means gift, maidan means plain area, julab means laxative and the most important, which is of our use here, is Babri/Baburi /Bavala means related to unhealthy mental state or mad or abandoned or one who is abnormal. Babar writes about his infatuation, after his marriage in March AD 1500, for a boy as, In those days I discovered myself a strange inclination - no, a mad infatuation-for a boy in the camps bazaar, his name was Babri/Baburi being apposite. Until then I had no inclination of love and a couplet of Muhammad Salih came to my mind: When I see my friend I am abashed with shame; My companions look at me, I look away sans aim. This couplet suited my state of mind perfectly. In that maelstrom of desire and passion, and under the stress of youthful folly, I used to wander, bareheaded and barefoot, through streets and lanes, orchards and vineyards. I showed civility neither to friends nor to strangers, took no care of myself or others. Babar clearly stated that guys name was Bavara as he was of raging and flickering nature and Babar himself became Bavara or crazy for him to attain his sexual proximity. That is why the term Babri Mosque is specially used only for the construction that was done according to Mughal architecture at Ramjanmabhoomi because it was made for Hindus not for Muslims. Babri Mosque means Mosques of infidels-insane Hindus.

Book Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

Download or read book Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm written by Kate Douglas Wiggin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-05-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugely popular when it was first published in 1903 and admired by authors from Jack London to Mark Twain, this delightful novel introduced a heroine as irrepressible and fun-loving as Tom Sawyer, who would serve as a role model for a century of American girls and women. When ten-year-old Rebecca Randall comes to live with flinty aunt Miranda and her sentimental sister Jane in a small town in Maine, they expect to turn her into a proper young lady. Instead, Rebecca will end up changing them. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is as charming today as it was one hundred years ago and is unexpectedly poignant in its evocation of an America contemplating the choices open to women facing their futures in a new era. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in the Leatherwoods is one of the country's most delightful childhood memoirs, penned by an Ozark native with a keen, observant eye and a gift for narrative. John Quincy Wolf's relaxed style and colorful characters resemble those of another chronicler of nineteenth-century rural life, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Wolf's acerbic wit and lucid prose infuse the White River pioneers of his story with such life that the reader participates vicariously in their log rollings, house-raisings, spelling bees, hog killings, soap making, country dances, and camp meetings. Originally published by Memphis State University Press in 1974, this new edition includes additional writings of John Q. Wolf and a continuation of the autobiographical narrative after his 1887 move to Batesville. Wolf's writings are valuable resources for southern historians, folklorists, general readers, and scholars of Ozarkiana because they provide a rare glimpse into the social and family life of a largely misunderstood and stereotyped people--the independent hill farmers of the Arkansas Ozarks of the 1870s and 1880s. With Life in the Leatherwoods, Wolf bestows a benediction upon a society that existed vibrantly and humorously in his memory--one that has now forever disappeared from the American countryside.
