Book excerpt: Among the problems related to CTBT a very important role belongs to the calibration of the regional travel times (regional kinematic calibration). The success in solving this task would significantly improve the accuracy of the weak seismic event location by the system. The methods that are applied to perform this kind of calibration are assumed in the present paper. All these methods can be broken into two principal groups: methods for direct calibration and those utilizing the velocity model of the media that is to be developed in an intermediate stage. Direct methods are used to construct the time correction surfaces making use of previously learned seismological experience (regional travel time tables) or directly employing the experimental data. The first approach represents the try to perform the task through the linear combination of regional travel time tables (godographs) and their errors. Another technique is a kind of spatial interpolation of the regional observations for given station. Indirect methods solve the calibration problem in two steps. Initially the 3-D velocity model of the media is being produced by the inversion of the observations. Afterwards the field of travel times is generated on the base of the velocity model. Methods inside the group differ depending upon what way is chosen for the reverse kinematic problem solution. Currently the velocity models are being built by "try-and-drop" technique or by tomographic inversion. The tomographic P-models developed till now do not possess the horizontal resolution enough to be successfully applied in a regional scale. The main reason of poor lateral resolution for the uppermost mantle comes from low amount and uneven distribution of regional P-wave observations used to produce the global tomographic models. The reliability of 3-D model constructed by "try-and-drop" method is unknown but its using is still reasonable unless enough data for the area to be calibrated have been collected.

Camera-Aided Robot Calibration studies the properties of kinematic modeling techniques that are suitable for robot calibration. It summarizes the well-known Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) modeling convention and indicates the drawbacks of the D-H model for robot calibration. The book develops the Complete and Parametrically Continuous (CPC) model and the modified CPC model, that overcome the D-H model singularities. The error models based on these robot kinematic modeling conventions are presented. No other book available addresses the important, practical issue of hand/eye calibration. This book summarizes current research developments and demonstrates the pros and cons of various approaches in this area. The book discusses in detail the final stage of robot calibration - accuracy compensation - using the identified kinematic error parameters. It offers accuracy compensation algorithms, including the intuitive task-point redefinition and inverse-Jacobian algorithms and more advanced algorithms based on optimal control theory, which are particularly attractive for highly redundant manipulators. Camera-Aided Robot Calibration defines performance indices that are designed for off-line, optimal selection of measurement configurations. It then describes three approaches: closed-form, gradient-based, and statistical optimization. The included case study presents experimental results that were obtained by calibrating common industrial robots. Different stages of operation are detailed, illustrating the applicability of the suggested techniques for robot calibration. Book excerpt: Articulated arm coordinate measuring machine (AACMM) is a kind of portable coordinate measuring equipment, which employs a series of rotating joints. In order to improve the measuring accuracy and repeatability of AACMM, it is essential to calibrate the kinematic parameters of AACMM. The calibration process is a kind of nonlinear optimization problem and can be solved by employing various optimization algorithms most including Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LMA) and trust region algorithm. Recently, evolutionary computation (EC) has been extensively studied and applied to many engineering problems, since they have some positive features such as easy implementation, broad applicability and robust mechanism of escaping from the local optimum. Chaos optimization algorithm (COA) is one of the evolutionary computation, which utilizes chaotic numerical sequences. In this article, a new kinematic calibration approach for AACMM is proposed by using niching chaos optimization algorithm (NCOA). A hybrid objective function for kinematic calibration is proposed that reflects the various performance tests including single-point articulation performance test, effective diameter performance test and volumetric performance test. Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and niching chaos optimization algorithm are applied for calibrating the kinematic parameters. Niching chaos optimization algorithm shows competitive calibration performance to Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the measurement accuracy calibrated using NCOA has been better than that of using LMA in terms of the root-mean-square deviation. Book excerpt: The aim of using parallel kinematic motion systems as an alternative of conventional machine tools for precision machining has raised the demands made on the accuracy of identification of the geometric parameters that are necessary for the kinematic transformation of the motion variables. The accuracy of a parallel manipulator is not only dependent upon an accurate control of its actuators but also upon a good knowledge of its geometrical characteristics. As the platform's controller determines the length of the actuators according to the nominal model, the resulted pose of the platform is inaccurate. One way to enhance platform accuracy is by kinematic calibration, a process by which the actual kinematic parameters are identified and then implemented to modify the kinematic model used by the controller. The first and most general valuation criterion for the actual calibration approaches is the relative improvement of the motion accuracy, eclipsing the other aspects to pay for it. The calibration outlay has been underestimated or even neglected for a long time. The scientific value of the calibration procedure is not only in direct proportion to the achieved accuracy, but also to the calibration effort. These demands become particularly stringent in case of the calibration of hexapods of the so-called simple design. The objectives of the here proposed new calibration procedure are based on the deficits mentioned above under the special requirements due to the circumstances of the simple design-concept. The main goals of the procedure can be summarized in obtaining the basics for an automated kinematic calibration procedure which works efficiently, quickly, effectively and possibly low-cost, all-in-one economically applied to the parallel kinematic machines. The problem will be approached systematically and taking step by step the necessary conclu-sions and measurements through: Systematical analysis of the workspace to determine the optimal measuring procedure, meas.

The conference was organized by the Department of Physics and the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla with support from the Physics Departments of the Universities of Helsinki and Turku. This conference, Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses has now gained the status of a major nuclear physics serial conference. The previous conference was held in Bellaire, Michigan, USA. The conference was first held in 1967 in Lysekil, Sweden, then entitled Conference on Nuclei Far from Stability. ENAM2001 welcomed 270 participants from 34 countries, including 17 accompanying per sons. The content of the program was selected based on the advice of the International Advisory Committee. The Committee members read and considered 253 submitted abstracts in selecting oral contributions. During the conference week 76 invited and oral talks were given. The rest of the contributions were presented in dedicated poster sessions. Many thanks go to the speakers of oral and poster presentations for their enthusiasm and for the high quality of their work which demonstrated the liveliness of the field. Participation in the lectures was high and contributions from the audience were important towards the success of this conference. The organizers would like to especially thank Cary Davids of Argonne National Laboratory for his comprehensive summary talk, which is also included in these Proceedings.

After the catastrophic 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, legislation was passed to expand U.S. tsunami warning capabilities. Since then, the nation has made progress in several related areas on both the federal and state levels. At the federal level, NOAA has improved the ability to detect and forecast tsunamis by expanding the sensor network. Other federal and state activities to increase tsunami safety include: improvements to tsunami hazard and evacuation maps for many coastal communities; vulnerability assessments of some coastal populations in several states; and new efforts to increase public awareness of the hazard and how to respond. Tsunami Warning and Preparedness explores the advances made in tsunami detection and preparedness, and identifies the challenges that still remain. The book describes areas of research and development that would improve tsunami education, preparation, and detection, especially with tsunamis that arrive less than an hour after the triggering event. It asserts that seamless coordination between the two Tsunami Warning Centers and clear communications to local officials and the public could create a timely and effective response to coastal communities facing a pending tsuanami. According to Tsunami Warning and Preparedness, minimizing future losses to the nation from tsunamis requires persistent progress across the broad spectrum of efforts including: risk assessment, public education, government coordination, detection and forecasting, and warning-center operations. The book also suggests designing effective interagency exercises, using professional emergency-management standards to prepare communities, and prioritizing funding based on tsunami risk.
