In Alaska new opportunities for the fulfillment of his childhood dreams pre- sented itself and were gladly taken advantage of. Today in advanced age, Wolf, as he is known nowadays, is still living on his own terms with his dog, Thorak, in a small village on the Yukon, and his philosophy is that everything happens for a reason!

Book excerpt: As part of a mapping project conducted by the Alaska State Office of the Bureau of land Management and by Ducks Unlimited, four Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite scenes (acquired June 30, 1999 and June 23, 2000) were used to classify the Koyukuk National Wildlife Refuge and lower Melozitna River drainage into 43 cover categories. The project area consists of 4.5 million acres and extends from the Yukon River in the south, to the Koyukuk River and Nulato HiIls in the east, to Caribou Mountain in the north, and to Melozitna River valley in the east. With the aid of a helicopter, data were collected at 452 field sites between June 19 and 29, 2001 to document the vegetation variation in order to correlate it with satellite imagery during the image classification process. ERDAS Imagine was used to perform the classification and to manage the field site polygons. The aim of the project is an integrated GIS database that can be used for improved natural resource planning.
