Book Extensional Viscosity of Dilute Polymer Solutions

Download or read book Extensional Viscosity of Dilute Polymer Solutions written by Jin Huang and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to obtain reliable extensional viscosity measurements for dilute polymer solutions using a filament-stretching rheometer at the University of Toronto. Initial extensional measurements of two Newtonian fluids gave data very close to the expected values, which validated the experimental technique. Three dilute solutions of high-molecular-weight polystyrene in oligomeric styrene and the M1 fluid, were then tested. For the least viscous fluid, high strains were achieved and a steady-state Trouton ratio of about 900 was obtained, at all Deborah numbers. For the more viscous liquids, high strains were not achieved because the fluid filaments detached from their holders. Reasonable agreement was obtained in the data comparisons with MIT and Monash University using similar test techniques and the same fluids. The fact that the steady-state value of SM-1 was independent of the extensional rate suggests that this value could be used as a material property for SM-1.

Book Elastic Behavior of Polymer Melts

Download or read book Elastic Behavior of Polymer Melts written by Helmut Münstedt and published by Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH Co KG. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the elastic properties of polymer melts is necessary for ensuring successful polymer processing and thus producing high-quality plastic parts. This unique book is the first to focus on this important topic. Starting with the molecular origin of elastic behavior and an explanation of the physical quantities involved, experimental methods and the dependence of elastic behavior on experimental parameters are then presented. Elastic properties of filled and unfilled systems are compared directly, and polymer blends are also considered. Elastic effects in various applications are included, such as in extrudate swell, internal stresses, and shrink films, to illustrate the importance of this field in the plastics processing industry.

Book Measurement of Extensional Viscosity by the Stretching of Viscoelastic Liquid Columns Quarterly Report April June 1995

Download or read book Measurement of Extensional Viscosity by the Stretching of Viscoelastic Liquid Columns Quarterly Report April June 1995 written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work in the field of atomization has explored the breakup of viscoelastic liquids. Studies have observed that viscoelastic liquids are much more resistant to breakup in comparison with Newtonian liquids. This high resistance to breakup has been attributed to the high extensional viscosities that viscoelastic liquids possess. Although extensional viscosity has been identified as having a major influence on the mode of breakup, no studies have yet been successful in correlating spray quality with a parameter that is truly description of the extensional viscosity of viscoelastic liquids. In this study, a new method is used to determine the extensional viscosities of viscoelastic liquids by the stretching of liquid columns. This method is used to show quantitative variations in extensional viscosity as a function of polymer concentration in aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide e10. Results suggest that as polymer concentration is increased, the liquids exhibit extension thickening behavior.

Book Rheological Measurement

Download or read book Rheological Measurement written by A.A. Collyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many cases rheological measurements are carried out in the simplest of geometries, but the interpretation involved in obtaining the rheological parameters of the test fluids from these measurements is surprisingly complex. The purpose of this book is to emphasise the points on which most workers in the field agree, and to let the authors deal with the contentious points according to their own beliefs and experience. This work represents a summary of the current thought on rheological meas urement by experts in the various techniques. When making measurements and obtaining from them parameters that describe the flow behaviour of the test fluids, it is essential that the experimentalist understands the underlying theory and shortcomings of the measurement technique, that he is aware of the likely microstructure of the fluid, and that from this he can appreciate how the fluid and the measuring system will interact with each other. It is this interaction that gives both the required rheological parameters of the fluids and the artefacts that confuse the issue. This book covers the main rheological measurement techniques from capillary, slit and stretching flows to rotational and oscillatory rheometry in various geometries including sliding plate measurements. These topics are backed up by chapters on more practical aspects, such as commercial instruments, and on computer control and data acquisition. The chapters deal with the basic methods, how the measurements are taken, and what assumptions and interpretations are made to obtain valid data on the test fluids.

Book Development of Methods of Evaluation Extensional Properties of Polymer Solutions from Measurements of Shear

Download or read book Development of Methods of Evaluation Extensional Properties of Polymer Solutions from Measurements of Shear written by E. A. Kearsley and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although large extensional flow components occur in many important technological processes of liquids, there is no currently suitable device to measure the elongational properties of polymer solutions. To obtain such measurements the BKZ model of the mechanical behavior of polymer solutions was formulated to infer extensional properties from shear measurements. Both the technique and its limitations are discussed in this report. Stress relaxation measurements of five solutions were taken and show promise for the practicality of this procedure for inferring extensional fluid properties. (Author).
