Download or read book Shipbuilding Technology and Education written by Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-05-22 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. shipbuilding industry now confronts grave challenges in providing essential support of national objectives. With recent emphasis on renewal of the U.S. naval fleet, followed by the defense builddown, U.S. shipbuilders have fallen far behind in commercial ship construction, and face powerful new competition from abroad. This book examines ways to reestablish the U.S. industry, to provide a technology base and R&D infrastructure sustaining both commercial and military goals. Comparing U.S. and foreign shipbuilders in four technological areas, the authors find that U.S. builders lag most severely in business process technologies, and in technologies of new products and materials. New advances in system technologies, such as simulation, are also needed, as are continuing developments in shipyard production technologies. The report identifies roles that various government agencies, academia, and, especially, industry itself must play for the U.S. shipbuilding industry to attempt a turnaround.

Book excerpt: First book to give an insight into a growing area of interest - stealth warship technology - which is crucial for future developments in warship construction. It demonstrates the importance of materials used in warship construction and how this influences all of a naval platform's design parameters. Stealth technology is now considered a critical component within warship design, with interest in the concept of stealth increasing around the globe as naval forces adapt to new challenges. Many new developing nations are now implementing their first generation of stealth technology military hardware. This exciting book explores the full extent of threats to warships and thus the transformational change in naval architecture to incorporate these modern stealth technologies. Discussing the history of stealth technology, with references to well-known aircraft, ships and events in military history, the book also provides readers with a unique opportunity to develop an understanding of the specialist skills required in this naval sector. This is an essential read for anyone interested in stealth design and the issues involved in this evolving technology.
Download or read book Make Think Imagine written by John Browne and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's unprecedented pace of change leaves many people wondering what new technologies are doing to our lives. Has social media robbed us of our privacy and fed us with false information? Are the decisions about our health, security and finances made by computer programs inexplicable and biased? Will these algorithms become so complex that we can no longer control them? Are robots going to take our jobs? Can we provide housing for our ever-growing urban populations? And has our demand for energy driven the Earth's climate to the edge of catastrophe?John Browne argues that we need not and must not put the brakes on technological advance. Civilization is founded on engineering innovation; all progress stems from the human urge to make things and to shape the world around us, resulting in greater freedom, health and wealth for all. Drawing on history, his own experiences and conversations with many of today's great innovators, he uncovers the basis for all progress and its consequences, both good and bad. He argues compellingly that the same spark that triggers each innovation can be used to counter its negative consequences. Make, Think, Imagine provides an eloquent blueprint for how we can keep moving towards a brighter future.

Download or read book Trends in Control and Measurement Education written by D.P. Atherton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the published Proceedings of selected papers from the IFAC Symposium, Swansea, 11-13 July 1988, where a forum was provided for discussion of the latest advances and techniques in the education of control and instrument engineers. Seven major topics were covered to aid lecturers in understanding, developing and presenting systems engineering - control and measurement - as a subject to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The teaching of real-time computer control as a topic and laboratory experiments for both continuous and discrete systems were discussed, as was process control, with the emphasis on providing the student with engineering experience by using scaled-down equipment which would teach practical skills. Included in the Proceedings are papers on measurement and instrumentation, an area felt to be neglected within academic instruction. The development of software tools for systems design within systems engineering was included, as was the exchange of teaching packages and methods between academics, and the education curriculum of systems engineering within developing countries. These Proceedings will prove to be a useful up-to-date guide and reference source for all lecturers and professors involved in curriculum development and the teaching of control and measurement in systems engineering.
