Book The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Download or read book The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea written by Linda Pannozzo and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-03T00:00:00Z with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s the collapse of the Atlantic groundfish stocks signaled the destruction of life in the seas, but it also threw 40,000 people out of work, unraveling the very fabric of rural life throughout Atlantic Canada. Twenty years later, even after fishing moratoriums and limited directed fishing, the cod have not recovered and some stocks are on the verge of biological extinction. The fishing industry, politicians and government scientists blame the growing population of grey seals – a species that had up until the 1970s been severely depleted – and argue that a large-scale cull of the population is needed to save the cod. In The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, Linda Pannozzo finds that the truth is much more complex and that the seals are scapegoats for the federal government’s mismanagement of the cod stocks, deflecting attention away from the effects of global warming and the continued use of destructive fishing methods. The collapse of the cod, its failure to recover and the recent recommendations for large-scale grey seal culls are stark reminders of how fisheries, science and public policy are increasingly estranged from each other.

Book The Sustainable Management of Grey Seal Populations

Book excerpt: Report reviewing evidence presented to the Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans on the impact of the grey seal population on groundfish and shellfish stocks in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Committee heard from more than 40 witnesses and representatives from government, academic, animal welfare, environmental, fishing and fishery-related groups, and residents of the region. Based on the evidence presented, the report provides recommended actions for the federal government.

Book Top Predators in Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Top Predators in Marine Ecosystems written by C. J. Camphuysen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainable exploitation of the marine environment depends upon our capacity to develop systems of management with predictable outcomes. Unfortunately, marine ecosystems are highly dynamic and this property could conflict with the objective of sustainable exploitation. This book investigates the theory that the population and behavioural dynamics of predators at the upper end of marine food chains can be used to assist with management. Since these species integrate the dynamics of marine ecosystems across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, they offer new sources of information that can be formally used in setting management objectives. This book examines the current advances in the understanding of the ecology of marine predators and will investigate how information from these species could be used in management.

Book See What a Seal Can Do

Download or read book See What a Seal Can Do written by Christine Butterworth and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical portrait of seal characteristics and life explains how seals appear to be slow and sleepy creatures on land but are powerful, graceful and dynamic animals under the water who cleverly outmaneuver predators and skillfully catch fishy dinners.

Book Application of the Precautionary Approach and Conservation Reference Point to the Management of Atlantic Seals

Download or read book Application of the Precautionary Approach and Conservation Reference Point to the Management of Atlantic Seals written by Mike O. Hammill and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precautionary approach (PA) brings scientists, resource managers and stakeholders together to identify clear management objectives and to establish specific benchmark or reference levels in order to enable the status of the resource to be evaluated and to identify specific management actions that would be triggered when a population level approaches or falls below the benchmark level. The PA also recognizes that the amount of information concerning the status of a resource may vary and that a lack of information is not sufficient to delay taking a management decision. This document presents a conceptual framework for applying the PA to Atlantic seal management. For data-rich species, two precautionary levels & a conservation reference level are proposed. For data-poor species such as hooded & grey seals, which require a more risk-adverse approach to their management, an approach using a level called the potential biological removal is described.

Download or read book The Behaviour of Pinnipeds written by D. Renouf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We teach our students of behavioural science that one first defines a research problem, and then the most appropriate animal is selected to investigate hypotheses. The reverse order of events is improper: a particular class of animals should not be studied for its own sake. In the case of the Pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, fur seals and walruses) the organism and the problem are essentially the same. The research questions presented in this volume in one way or another relate to survival in two worlds, the ocean for foraging, and the terrain at its edge or frozen above it for breeding. The evolution of Pinniped behaviour and the mechanisms which underlie it are a consequence of having to cope with two seemingly incompatible sets of environmental constraints. The physiological adaptations for concomitant functioning in two media with very different physical characteristics have produced correlated behav ioural modifications. The energetic demands of reproduction and foraging are idiosyncratic because each activity occurs on opposite sides of the air/water interface. As a result, the mating system must reconcile aquatic design for such functions as locomotion and thermoregulation, with the terrestrial requirements for successful pupping. Similarly, the ecology of this dual habitat prescribes the rules governing the behaviour of the neonate and its interactions with its mother.

Book Marine Mammals Fisheries Tourism and Management Issues

Download or read book Marine Mammals Fisheries Tourism and Management Issues written by Nicholas Gales and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2003-10-22 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Mammals: Fisheries, Tourism and Management Issues brings together contributions from 68 leading scientists from 12 countries to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date review on the way we manage our interactions with whales, dolphins, seals and dugongs. The book examines how we have fared conserving the world’s marine mammal populations, with a focus on the key issues of fisheries and tourism. From a unique southern hemisphere perspective, the authors consider how science informs the culling debate, how wild fisheries and aquaculture interact with marine mammal populations and how we might manage the effects of whale, dolphin and seal watching industries. The authors also address other issues such as the way in which ethics, genetics, acoustics, ecosystem models and pollution influence the management and conservation of marine mammals. Marine Mammals is an invaluable and accessible resource for all those involved with marine mammals, including scientists, managers, policy makers, industry representatives and students. Winner of a 2004 Whitley Award.
