This was a time when most kids lived with two parents, often mom stayed home, before drugs, before quick and easy divorce, literally the last generation raised under those conditions. Well, this book will tell you what it was like, at least what it was like in small town Texas.This collection of memories and stories started as a project dreamed up by Wayne Scott and Jim Stedman with the aim of collecting the recollections of our peers about growing up during the 1940s and 50s. We sent out the call via email lists of classmates, asking for stories and memories about various themes: grade school, high school, sports, life in the country, places, entertainment, the songs, and so on. Very shortly, we had over 1,500 pages of email sent in by the "authors" you will get to know as you read our book.These "authors" were born between 1935 and 1944 when the country was still in the Great Depression and, then, entering WWII. Many of us still have memories of WWII events and the ensuing peacetime of the 1940s. Many of us were raised on farms and attended country schools with several grades in one or two rooms; some rode horses to school. Some experienced discrimination, both in where they attended school and where they could watch a movie. We grew up with few medications and few vaccinations, when the threat of polio was real, and family doctors still made house calls, even out in the country.Some of our stories will make you cringe a little; others will make you laugh. If you are old enough, some will seem similar to your own growing-up experiences. So, we invite you partake of our stories. They have been edited, but only with a light touch, so do not expect smooth prose. They are what they are: memories put down as our "authors" were moved by recall.Jim Stedman, Editor

Aged 25, Lockhart became the British Vice-Consul to Moscow in 1912. With revolution in the air, it was dangerous, decadent posting. The 'Boy Ambassador' became an eyewitness to pivotal events and in 1918 was charged with establishing a diplomatic understanding with the Bolsheviks, to ensure that Russia remained in the war against Germany. It was a precarious mission: Whitehall could not be seen support revolutionaries; Lockhart grew wary of his masters secret machinations; while Lenin and Trotsky's cordial relations with the British agent never quite dispelled their mistrust of the nation he represented. In September 1918 he would be falsely accused of a counter-revolutionary plot to overthrow the Bolsheviks, and sent to the Loubianka. His account even inspired a Hollywood movie. The work itself comprises three distinct parts: a set of three photographs of landscapes; a larger set of posed studio portraits of children and young teenagers; and a 138-minute 16-millimeter film, which is itself assembled from twelve ten-minute scenes—each a single immobile take—divided in half by a ten-minute intermission. This volume in Afterall's One Work series offers a nuanced reading of Lockhart's work, with color illustrations from both series of photographs and the film. Art historian Howard Singerman sees in Pine Flat not a straightforward portrait of a community of children or ethnography of a place. Rather, the work explores the possibility of a space for childhood in which children have the right to intimacy, innocence, and interest outside adult narratives. The children in Pine Flat are posed formally and conventionally, but the space they occupy and the identities they construct are their own. Youth culture has long been exploited, to sell itself in order to be sold to; today, the rights of children to their own childhoods are constantly eroded. In Pine Flat, Singerman argues, Lockhart proposes a place, transitory and pastoral, “where childhood might be lived differently, imagined under a different order of power and possibility.”

It is often suggested that 'memory traces' are represented by a hierarchically organized system of analyzers, modified, sharpened and differentiated by encounters with successive events. Remembering: An Activity of Mind and Brain is the magnum opus of one of the leading figures in the psychology of memory. It sets out Fergus Craik's current view of human memory as a dynamic activity of mind and brain. The author argues that remembering should be understood as a system of active cognitive processes, similar to (perhaps identical to) the processes underlying attending, perceiving and thinking. Thus, encoding processes are essentially viewed as the mental activities involved in perceiving and understanding, and retrieval is described as the partial reactivation of these same processes. This account proposes that episodic and semantic memory should be thought of as levels in a continuum of specificity rather than as separate systems of memory. In addition, the book presents Craik's views on working memory and on age-related memory impairments. In the latter case the losses are attributed largely to a difficulty with the self-initiation of appropriate encoding and retrieval operations compensated, when needed, by support from the external environment. The development of these ideas is discussed throughout the book and illustrated substantially by experiments from the author's lab, but also by empirical and theoretical contributions from other researchers.
