Book Localised Or Localising Democracy

Download or read book Localised Or Localising Democracy written by Josephine Ahikire and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central concern of this study is the politics of inclusion of women in Uganda s local government. The legally prescribed numerical representation of women in local government decision-making structures has led to changes, increasing significantly women s public presence in community politics. Together with the decentralisation process, this has created a new political landscape which calls for a gendered understanding of local-level politics and the inclusive potential for local democracy in Uganda. The author explores local democracy as a process within which gender power relations are a constitutive rather than a contingent part. She sets out the complex and dynamic problems, and finds, contrary to public perception, that decentralisation does not necessary enable more participation by the unprivileged, including women. Josephine Ahikire is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Social Science, Department of Women and Gender Studies at Makerere University; a senior research fellow tih the Centre for Basic Research in Kampala; and a visiting scholar at the University of Oldenburg in Germany. She is widely published on gendered constructions of public politics, labour and popular culture.

Book Local Democracy Under Siege

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A luminous work about everyday citizens that should free up local democratic energies across the land!"--Aihwa Ong, author of Buddha is Hiding: Refugees, Citizenship, the New America "Local Democracy Under Siege argues persuasively that American democracy is at a pivotal moment where the forces of exclusion and the ideology of market rule contest with new forms of political activism and engaged citizenship. Readers will take away new perspectives on power, race, class, and activism from this cogent and timely analysis."--Louise Lamphere, co-author of Sunbelt Working Mothers: Reconciling Family and Factory "This unique study provides a vital enquiry into the troubled times of local democracy and poses critical questions about its future in the USA."--John Clarke, author of Changing Welfare, Changing StatesWhat is the state of democracy at the turn of the 21st century? To answer this question, seven scholars lived for a year in five North Carolina communities. They observed public meetings of all sorts, had informal and formal interviews with people, and listened as people conversed with each other at bus stops and barber shops, soccer games and workplaces. Their collaborative ethnography allows us to understand how diverse members of a community-not just the elite-think about and experience "politics" in ways that include much more than merely voting. This book illustrates how the social and economic changes of the last three decades have made some new routes to active democratic participation possible while making others more difficult. Local Democracy Under Siege suggests how we can account for the current limitations of U.S. democracy and how remedies can be created that ensure moremeaningful participation by a greater range of

Book Local democracy civic engagement and community

Download or read book Local democracy civic engagement and community written by Hugh Atkinson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible book is about local democracy, civic engagement, political participation and community in Britain. It rejects the many pessimistic accounts that seek to dominate our political discourse with their talk of political apathy, community breakdown and selfish individualism The book focuses on local democratic politics in Britain over the last decade and a half, from the election of the New Labour government right up to the current Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government. It includes an analysis of local democracy, civic engagement and participation across a range of policy areas and in the context of debates around accountability, legitimacy, sustainability, localism and the 'big society'. Drawing on a wide range of examples, it argues that local democracy is a vibrant terrain of innovation, civic engagement and participation, and dynamic community activity, with a wide variety of informal and formal activity taking place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readings that point the way to a peaceful, democratic, and ecologically resilient transition to an era of localization, limits, and societal opportunities. Energy supplies are tightening. Persistent pollutants are accumulating. Food security is declining. There is no going back to the days of reckless consumption, but there is a possibility—already being realized in communities across North America and around the world—of localizing, of living well as we learn to live well within immutable constraints. This book maps the transition to a more localized world. Society is shifting from the centrifugal forces of globalization (cheap and abundant raw materials and energy, intensive commercialization, concentrated economic and political power) to the centripetal forces of localization: distributed authority and leadership, sustainable use of nearby natural resources, community self-reliance and cohesion (with crucial regional, national, and international dimensions). This collection, offering classic texts by such writers as Wendell Berry, M. King Hubbert, and Ernst F. Schumacher, as well as new work by authors including Karen Litfin and David Hess, shows how localization—a process of affirmative social change—can enable psychologically meaningful and fulfilling lives while promoting ecological and social sustainability. Topics range from energy dynamics to philosophies of limits, from the governance of place-based communities to the discovery of positive personal engagement. Together they point the way to a transition that can be peaceful, democratic, just, and environmentally resilient.

Book Localising Power in Post Authoritarian Indonesia

Download or read book Localising Power in Post Authoritarian Indonesia written by Vedi Hadiz and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how the design of institutional change results in unintended consequences. Many post-authoritarian societies have adopted decentralization—effectively localizing power—as part and parcel of democratization, but also in their efforts to entrench "good governance." Vedi Hadiz shifts the attention to the accompanying tensions and contradictions that define the terms under which the localization of power actually takes place. In the process, he develops a compelling analysis that ties social and institutional change to the outcomes of social conflict in local arenas of power. Using the case of Indonesia, and comparing it with Thailand and the Philippines, Hadiz seeks to understand the seeming puzzle of how local predatory systems of power remain resilient in the face of international and domestic pressures. Forcefully persuasive and characteristically passionate, Hadiz challenges readers while arguing convincingly that local power and politics still matter greatly in our globalized world.
