Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Landscape Photography The following letters were written to a friend whose study of photography enabled him to produce a technically perfect negative, but who did not know how to put his knowledge to pictorial use. They were not intended to point out a royal road to art, but rather to act as a stimulus to activity in the search for subjects for the camera. And to teach how readiness of resource may help good. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ... No. IX.--A Talk In The Billiard-room. I PROMISED I would give you something like a report of one of the discussions that take place at night in the billiard-room during our annual visit to Wales. I fear I shall not be able to recall any particular night, therefore you must be content with a "blot" or "impressionist memory" of several. A smoking chat, well mixed with chaff, is not easily reportable or profitably readable, so I will omit a good deal that may not be interesting or teach you anything. White: Our photographer was painting today; how did he get on? Black: I was much complimented by the miller, who takes an acute interest in art. His great desire is, he says, to go to London to see all the pictures in the Tower. He had never seen me painting before, and it gave him great satisfaction. He said in his best AngloCambrian, "Ah! you do do them by hand, too. It is well when a man can turn his hand to anything. You do yours by machine mostly, and can make many, but it takes the other gentleman a long time to do them by hand!" White: Ante up the product. Black: There is the interesting and valuable result. Speak your mind, Brown, you are a great painter; but as is often the case with great painters, now-a-days, you don't know much about art, but we will take your opinion on the smudgery part of it. Brown: Oh! I can't be bothered with such juvenile efforts. You ought never to waste good oil-colors. Turn it upside down and begin another if--and only if--you can't find something better to do. But why do you bother yourself with paint? Black: Eliger Goff says, "When a man forgets his first mother it's time for him to be born again," and this is not the first time I have painted. Gray: The Renaissance was a healthy time for art. Black: The...

Download or read book Pictorial Landscape Photography Classic Reprint written by Paul Lewis Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial Landscape Photography There are certain elements which are requisite in the construe tion of a picture, and the greatest of these is vigor. With this present much may be forgiven in the way of technical deficiencies, but without it nothing of enduring value can be attained, though this is by no means to deny the worth of delicate prints in either a high or a low key. Such pictures easily may have more strength than the bolder, full-scale work of less thoughtful workers, for the finest strength is that which is controlled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Artist's Point of View, Embraced in a Series of Letters on Landscape Painting and Kindred Topics Of those underlying principles of art, whatever knowledge I have has been ac quired by studying carefully the best as well as the worst efforts of recognized artists, and through the reading of good books treating of art, along with that which may have come to me during a limited course of academic studies in drawing. To acquire any sort of proficiency in draughtsmanship, you should if possible attend a regular art school for a year or two at least; if unable to do this, then do the best you can without it. It goes without saying that the careful study of all grades of pictures, more especially of good ones, and the perusal of books on art, must prove beneficial to the young painter. Book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting

Download or read book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting written by Carl Gustav Carus and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arthur Atkins: Extracts From the Letters With Notes on Painting and Landscape; Written During the Period of His Work as a Painter in the Last Two Years of His Life; 1896 1898 For the friends of Arthur Atkins, these extracts from his letters, from the notes writ ten upon the margins of his sketches, will have a real and touching value. They will recall for them, his talk, his interests, the lovely charm of the serious and noble friend they knew. For those to whom he was unknown, the pages may reveal something of the sensi tive mind and heart of the artist: his response to the beauty and dignity of the visible world. The publication rests upon the desire of his associates, to supplement the pictures with whatever remains as a record of his gifts obscured as these gifts were, by the circum stances of life, by the last sad circumstance of death in early manhood.
