Book excerpt: Teams are a critical element used to enhance organizational effectiveness and effective leadership is critical to team effectiveness. Recent research has also found that teams may perform better when leadership responsibilities are shared across tearn members. This study examines whether vocal characteristics impact the pattern of leadership emergence within three-person teams working together to complete a simulated spaceship bridge task. Six hypotheses were tested, including three individual-level hypotheses and three team-level hypotheses. Three of these hypotheses were supported: (I) Vocal intensity (VI) is predictive of perceived leadership emergence, (2) extraversion is predictive of VI, and (3) shared leadership is predicted by the standard deviation of tearn-level Vl. Exploratory analyses were conducted, revealing potential situational effects impacting leader emergence as well as team performance. Implications for research and practice are also discussed.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Octavia Butler, here is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help to shape the futures we want. Change is constant. The world, our bodies, and our minds are in a constant state of flux. They are a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, Emergent Strategy teaches us to map and assess the swirling structures and to read them as they happen, all the better to shape that which ultimately shapes us, personally and politically. A resolutely materialist spirituality based equally on science and science fiction: a wild feminist and afro-futurist ride! adrienne maree brown, co-editor of Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements, is a social justice facilitator, healer, and doula living in Detroit.

Book Knowledge and Networks

Download or read book Knowledge and Networks written by Johannes Glückler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses a core question in many fields of the social sciences, namely how to create, share and adopt new knowledge. It creates an original space for conversation between two lines of research that have developed largely in parallel for a long time: social network theory and the geography of knowledge. This book considers that relational thinking has become increasingly important for scholars to capture societal outcomes by studying social relations and networks, whereas the role of place, space and spatial scales has been somewhat neglected outside an emergent geography of knowledge. The individual contributions help integrate network arguments of connectivity, geographical arguments of contiguity and contextuality into a more comprehensive understanding of the ways in which people and organizations are constrained by and make use of space and networks for learning and innovation. Experts in the fields of geography, sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management and organizational studies develop conceptual models and propose empirical research that illustrates the ways in which networks and geography play together in processes of innovation, learning, leadership, and power.
