Book excerpt: Christianity has tended to focus on right beliefs and right choices as the keys for personal growth. But biblical evidence and modern brain science show that our character is shaped more by whom we love than what we believe. Through conversations he had with Dallas Willard at the Heart & Soul Conference shortly before Dallas's death, Jim Wilder shows how we can train our brains to relate to God based on joyful, mutual attachment--which leads to emotional and spiritual maturity as our identity and character are formed by our relationship with God.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Challenge: The Church and the New World Order Patriotic Organizations, Conscription Leagues, and Preparedness Parades, then it might as well confess its impotency to be the leader of the world out of chaos into order. For none of these organizations are offering anything except the principles on which the old order rested, toppling always, insecure, and at last falling. It is this truth I wish to recall to the Churches. But mostly I wish to reassure those prophetic souls who have been writing me from all over our great land - and there are many, young, ardent, full of faith - that this is the great day of the Church if it but go forth with its Lord in a great venture far beyond the power of those who are bound by habit of thought and tradition, to go. To them belongs yesterday and today in Europe - to-morrow belongs to us. All this material has been used in editorial form in The Christian Work during the past year. This accounts for some repetition and some informality of expression not generally expected in a book. But it seemed best not to re-write them, and print them practically unchanged. F L. Book New Thought Its Lights and Shadows

Download or read book New Thought Its Lights and Shadows written by John Benjamin Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Thought, Its Lights and Shadows: An Appreciation and a Criticism It is no wonder that we are beginning to hear on every hand the question, What is New Thought But any intelligent answer to the question is seldom heard. In fact, neither the Christian people nor their leaders realize the magnitude of the new movement, or the mo mentum it has gained, or the inroads it will surely make into the Christian Church. Books and papers from the New Thought side are becoming very numerous. This book is an explanation of New Thought by a Christian. It is not for the professional philosopher but rather an elementary exposition for the people. This fact has partly determined the style, the avoid ance of technical terms except when necessarily quoted from New Thought, the arrangement of the materials, and the intentional repetitions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Leader Fallen: A Sermon Preached in the Rutgers-Street Church, New-York, on Sabbath Morning, April 11th, 1841 My Respected Friends; In consenting to your request for a copy of the annexed discourse, I felt it to be due to you to gratify the desire which, in so kind a manner, you expressed for yourselves, and have assured me is the desire of my people, to possess it in a printed form. I was also willing to offer it as an humble contribution to the very solemn occasion, which I doubted not would be improved and honoured by all my brethren. The delay in sending you the manuscript has been caused by the necessity of writing it out entirely from the few brief and hastily-prepared notes from which it was first preached. To do this, I have been obliged to confine myself to such intervals as were allowed by many other engagements. I trust that I have succeeded in reproducing the substance of what was spoken, and that you will be able to recognise, what I have endeavoured to preserve as nearly as possible, the very language. But, notwithstanding this endeavour, I have not refrained from expanding some of the thoughts which were but rapidly touched in preaching. The result has been to make the whole somewhat longer than I ventured to make it in the pulpit, even on such a special occasion. The reader, however, will have this compensating advantage, that if, as a hearer, he were too well bred to leave the preacher in the midst of his discourse, he can lay down the author at pleasure. Book excerpt: Does your leadership style fit new ways of doing church--leadership that is organic and elastic and that finds ways to seize God-given opportunities? Looking back and drawing on the ancient Christian tradition, Bob Whitesel describes seven traitsfor successful leadership, which he characterizes by seven symbols: O (the Greek symbol theta) - the first letter of the Greek word theos stresses that God is the source of the burden for others and provides the power to help them. Rx (the medical prescription symbol) - an emphasis on addressing the spiritual and physical health of leaders. G (a stylized "G" for "graffiti")- the edgy, colorful, and artful collages that help define contemporary organizations. A (inspired by the recycle symbol) - the idea of recycling places, experiences and people rather than discarding them. N - emerging networks that connect people more quickly, efficiently, precisely and continuously. I - an emphasis on "incarnation", a going "in the flesh" to serve others rather than sending surrogates. X (the Jerusalem cross with a number in each quadrant) - four types of measurement observed in Jerusalem (Acts 2:42-47), which at their core point to Christ's work on the cross. Taken together, thesesymbols spell out the word "organix" and represent a fundamentally new way tothink about your church and how you can best lead.
