Pourtant, l'exploitation des droits sur les créations ornementales est susceptible de générer des valeurs économiques pouvant contribuer à la réalisation des objectifs de développement des pays africains. L'efficacité d'une telle valorisation est entre autres tributaire de l'existence d'un système de protection servant de tels objectifs, ainsi que d'une réglementation internationale favorisant l'exploitation transnationale des dessins et modèles industriels, et tenant compte du niveau et des besoins de développement des pays africains. La présentation du système des dessins et modèles industriels de l'OAPI permet d'examiner si ces préoccupations sont prises en compte dans son organisation et son fonctionnement, et de proposer des mesures en vue de faire de ces objets de propriété intellectuelle un outil efficace de développement économique et social des pays membres de l'OAPI en particulier et des pays africains en général.

Le rôle de cet organisme déjà connu, il reste au titulaire ou aux ayants droits d'un dessin ou modèle industriel de savoir quelles sont les formalités requises pour bénéficier de l'acquisition du droit sur ce titre ainsi que les modes d'exploitation et les moyens de protection des droits conférés par l'acquisition du dessin ou modèle industriel. Le présent ouvrage est élaboré pour servir de guide aux chercheurs, praticiens, spécialistes ou non s'intéressant à l'acquisition, l'exploitation et la défense des droits d'un dessin ou modèle industriel dans l'espace OAPI.

Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

This book presents the results of the longest-running and most comprehensive study of forest fragmentation ever undertaken, the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonia, the only experimental study of tropical forest fragmentation in which baseline data are available before isolation from continuous forest took place.A joint project of Brazil’s National Institute for Research in Amazonia and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, the BDFFP has investigated the many effects that habitat fragmentation has on plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates.
