Download or read book Ernest Vandiver Governor of Georgia written by Harold Paulk Henderson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Vandiver was elected governor of the state of Georgia in 1958 on a platform of fiscal conservatism and steadfast resistance to desegregation. Having vowed to defend Georgia’s segregated social system at all costs, Vandiver nevertheless concluded that the state could not close its schools to avoid desegregation. Because of his decision to reject the path taken by George Wallace in Alabama and Orval Faubus in Arkansas and to protect public education in the state by complying with federal court mandates, Vandiver was denounced by the state’s more vocal proponents of segregation. Using primary sources and extensive interviews with the governor and his contemporaries, Henderson tells the full story of Vandiver’s life as a transitional figure in the political history of the state. He portrays Vandiver as a man cast by circumstances into presiding over a crisis greater than any faced by a Georgia governor since the Civil War. Henderson also notes some of Vandiver’s less recognized accomplishments, including the involvement of state government in furthering tourism, foreign investment, and industry. Ernest Vandiver is here recognized for his significant achievements in guiding the state through a period of rapid transformation.

With sensitivity and clarity, Johnny Hunt addresses some of the issues men find most difficult to talk about: pornography, substance abuse, anger, depression, unforgiveness, and more. Unspoken will give you the courage to overcome your stumbling blocks and step into a new life, free from the bondage of shame and silence. You can stand stronger when you stand with a community of believers—and Johnny will show you how. Find renewed strength to honor your family and worship the God who longs to give you true freedom.

Download or read book It Was What It Was My Memoir written by Diane Haley Toney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It Was What It Was is a charming and heartwarming autobiography of life growing up in the idyllic post-war era of the South during the 1950's. Relating tales of family, love, self-sacrifice, faith, and community, the author recounts life in small-town Lavonia, Georgia during an era of rapid social change. From tales of wartime sacrifice, to the Mayberry-esque quality of small town life, the booming economic growth in the post-war era, the heyday of the teenage social scene in the 1950s, and UFO encounters in the dark secluded countryside, this story has something for everyone. In relating her childhood experiences and teenage years during and after the conclusion of World War II, and ending with her professional contributions in public education, Mrs. Toney's life story is overlaid and interwoven with the history of the small southern town of Lavonia. In doing so, her story is Lavonia's story. Beautifully written and conveyed with warmth and much humor, this biography of times gone by is not to be missed!

Download or read book Come Again to the Circle written by William B. Kincaid and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come Again to the Circle features the wisdom and reflections of forty diverse Christian leaders from around the US. These leaders are working to faithfully facilitate the conversations that broke open during the pandemic and to leverage the learnings from the era of COVID for what lies ahead. Their stories, perspectives, and actions will provide reference points and first steps for congregations discerning the commitments and contours of their own futures. COVID-19 pulled the curtain back on the realities in the church and the broader society. Grief and massive uncertainty of recent years especially have created a pervasive, albeit misguided, nostalgia that has sent many congregations scurrying to return to the congregational life of pre-March 2020. At the same time, many people are evaluating the value added by their church participation and whether and how they will resume their religious activities. Come Again to the Circle focuses on the church transcending COVID, on being the church beyond COVID rather than a church defined by it. These leaders name themes, opportunities, and strategies to show us the way.
