Extrait: ...since, for your repose, you desire to postpone it, try and finish the letter, for what, after all, is it that I desire? Why, to see you henceforward enjoy an ineffable and religious calm, after so many painful agitations." "Yes, my father, I know it, you are very good," said poor Hardy, in a grateful voice, " excuse my weakness." "Can you go on with this letter, my dear son?" "Yes, father." "Then write;" and the reverend father continued his dictation. "' I enjoy undisturbed tranquillity, I am surrounded with care, and, thanks to the divine mercy, I hope to make a perfectly Christian end far from a world whose vanities I now see through. I do not say adieu, but that we shall soon meet, my dear Agricola; for I wish to tell you yourself of the wishes I form, and always must entertain, for you and your worthy comrades. Be my interpreter with them, and as soon as I find it convenient to receive you I will write; until then believe me always your very affectionate friend--'" Then the reverend father said to M. Hardy: "Do you think this will do, my dear son?" "Yes, father." "Sign it, then." "Yes, father." And the miserable man, after having signed it, fell back on his armchair, utterly exhausted. "This is not all, my dear son," added D'Aigrigny, drawing a paper from his pocket. "You must have the kindness again to sign this fresh favour granted by you to our reverend fathers' procureur to terminate the affairs you know of." "Oh, Heaven, again!" exclaimed Hardy, with a kind of feverish and diseased impatience. "But you see plainly, my father, my strength is quite gone." "You have only to sign after you have read it, my dear son," and D'Aigrigny presented to M. Hardy a large sheet of stamped...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tarry Thou Till I Come: Or Salathiel, the Wandering Jew I had headed the multitude: where others shrank, I urged; where others pitied, I reviled; I scoffed at the feeble malice of the priesthood; I scoffed at the tardy cruelty of the Roman; I swept away by menace and by scorn the human reluctance of the few who dreaded to dip their hands in blood. Thinking to do God service, and substituting my passions for my God, I threw fire brands on the hearts of a rash, jealous, and bigoted peo ple - I triumphed! In a deed, which ought to have covered earth with lamentation, which was to make angels weep, which might have shaken the universe into dust, I triumphed! The decree was passed: but my frenzy was not so to be satiated. I loathed the light while the victim lived. Under the charge of treason to Caesar, I demanded instant execu tion of the sentence - Not a day of life must be given; not an hour; - death, on the instant; death! My clamor was echoed by the roar of millions. But, in the moment of my exultation, I was stricken. F He who had refused an hour of life to the victim, was, in terrible retribution, condemned to know the misery of life interminable. I heard through all the voices of Jeru salem - I should have heard through all the thunders of heaven, the calm, low voice, Tarry thou, till I come! Book excerpt: The Wandering Jew (French: Le Juif errant) is an 1844 novel by the French writer Eugene Sue. The prologue of the text describes two figures who cry out to each other across the Bering Straits. One is the Wandering Jew, the other his sister, Herodiade. The Wandering Jew also represents the cholera epidemic- wherever he goes, cholera follows in his wake. The Wandering Jew and Herodiade are condemned to wander the earth until the entire Rennepont family has disappeared from the earth. The connection is that the descendants of the sister are also the descendants of Marius de Rennepont, Huguenots persecuted under Louis XIV by the Jesuits. The brother and sister are compelled to protect this very family from all harm. After this first introduction, the two appear only very rarely. The Rennepont family is unaware that these protective eminences grises exist, but they benefit from their protection in various ways, be it by being saved from scalping by the Native Americans, or from languishing in prison."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wandering Jew The Legend of the Wandering Jew is an example of how the folk-tale may sometimes be a mirror brought by Truth from the bottom of her well - the heart of the child like world - wherein may be seen by reflection things that few eyes can look upon directly. The splendours now gathered around a triumphant Christ conceal from many the face of the Changeling really there. But children, fools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tarry Thou Till I Come: Or Salathiel, the Wandering Jew This remarkable historical romance is closely associated by the author in his brief Preface with the early Second Coming of Christ, a belief that is held to-day by a rapidly increasing number of people in all parts of Christendom. The story was first published in 1827, and was issued at different times under different titles, as "Salathiel, a Story of the Past, the Present, and the Future"; and "Salathiel, the Immortal, or the Wandering Jew." It had wide popularity for a generation or more, the leading critical journals in England and America giving it great praise. In the present revival of the story, many typographical, and some other errors, that crept into the various editions, have been carefully corrected, chapter and marginal headings have been added, and the dialogs have been generally broken up into paragraphs in harmony with the fashion of to-day, and the whole book has been carefully annotated. We are glad in the belief that we have carried out successfully General Lewis Wallace's wish, that the story be worthily illustrated. We were fortunate in securing a masterful artist who shared the great enthusiasm of the author of "Ben Hur" for this story of Croly's, and in his drawings Mr. de Thulstrup has spared neither time nor labor, spending many months, both here and in Europe, in the study of the details necessary to perfect the pictures. We feel assured that General Wallace will now wish to recast the closing sentence of his Introductory Letter. The words that doomed Salathiel to immortality on earth, "Tarry Thou Till I Come," so fit the story that we have ventured to make them the chief title, and have so combined the new with the old that no one will be misled. The colored frontispiece by Mr. de Thulstrup happily illustrates the new title. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Tarry Thou Till I Come: Or Salathiel, The Wandering Jew; Introductory Letter By Gen. Lewis Wallace This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
