Khwe ist aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Sicht eine von sechs Dialektgruppen des Zentralkhoisan. Fünf dieser Dialektgruppen umfassen nach Köhler die Idiome von San-Gemeinschaften, die sechste die Dialekte aller Khoikhoi- und Bergdama-Gemeinschaften sowie einige weitere Sangemeinschaften. Zur Zeit leben ungefähr 8.000 Khwe im Caprivi-Streifen Nordwest-Namibias, in Angola, in Botswana und in Sambia sowie weitere 1.600 in Smithsdrift, Südafrika. Ein Anhang, der Ethnonyme, Klan-, Familien- und Eigennamen auflistet sowie ein etwa vierzigseitiger Beitrag von Matthias Brenzinger, der eine ausführliche Liste von Ortsnamen im westlichen Caprivi-Streifen enthält, beschließen die Studie.
