Book Key to the Families of North American Insects

Download or read book Key to the Families of North American Insects written by Charles Thomas Brues and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Key to the Families of North American Insects: An Introduction to the Classification of Insects More than fifty thousand different species of insects are now known from North America. Their descriptions fill libraries and their final identification requires the knowledge of specialists. Obviously no single volume can provide for their determination. But this host of species is divided into groups of related forms, the families of insects, and it is with their recognition that the present work deals. Identification of the families has been effected by means of analytical keys, which have been arranged as dichotomies. In the first couplet, for example, two contrasting descriptions are given, one of which should agree with the insect to be determined. The number at the end of this description indicates the couplet which should then be studied, and so on until the final name is secured. All of the keys have been arranged in this way, as the writers' experience in the classroom shows that specimens can be most easily and rapidly classified with a key of this type, which also requires much less space for printing. While the dichotomies frequently represent the natural relationships or the lines of phyletic development, no attempt has been made to preserve natural divisions wherever the convenience and practical Opera tion of the keys would have been sacrificed. Book Introduction to Insect Biology and Diversity

Download or read book Introduction to Insect Biology and Diversity written by Howell V. Daly and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensively revised and reorganized, the second edition of Introduction to Insect Biology and Diversity serves as an ideal text for courses in general entomology with laboratory sections. Written for students who have completed an introductory course in biology, it provides an in-depth treatment of both the biology of insects and their classification, including keys for identification for over four hundred families. The common insects of North America are discussed as well as species found elsewhere in the world. Parts I and II provide reading material for lectures: Part I: Insects as Organisms, covers morphology, physiology, and behavior, including social behavior. Part II: Insect Ecology, begins with population biology and includes chapters on insects in relation to their environments and pest management. Part III, Insect Diversity, provides source material for the laboratory. The classification of insects, their evolution, and fossil record are discussed first, followed by coverage of each order in terms of general biology and ecology, keys for identification of families, and, in some chapters, discussion of the biologies of families. All insect orders and over four hundred families of insects are treated. This second edition features new chapters on population biology, insects and microbes, pest management, and methods for making an insect collection. It is illustrated with new line drawings by Barbara Boole Daly and many new photographs, including 48 in color, by Edward S. Ross. A unique feature in a text of this kind, these color photographs allow students to witness a variety of life forms and habits that they normally would not have the opportunity to observe in nature.
