Download or read book A Review of Kansas Department of Transportation Reflective Sheeting Policy written by Eugene R. Russell and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to determine the best, cost-effective policy, consistent with safety, for sign sheeting material to be used on signs and construction work zone traffic control devices on State highways in Kansas. The investigation consisted of reviewing literature, contacting knowledgeable traffic engineers and research, conducting a survey of selected States' practice, conducting a life-cycle cost analysis, and reviewing a previous reflective sheeting study conducted for the Kansas Department of Transportation (Bellomo-McGee Inc., 1988).

Book Motorist Understanding of Traffic Control Devices in Kansas

Download or read book Motorist Understanding of Traffic Control Devices in Kansas written by Robert W. Stokes and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment was accomplished through a review of previous research efforts and by conducting a survey of over 500 Kansas motorists. 43 signs and pavement markings were evaluated in the survey of Kansas motorists. These traffic control devices consisted of 25 warning signs, 13 regulatory signs, and 5 longitudinal pavement markings. Two self-administered questionnaire-type survey instruments were used in this study. The primary instrument consisted of 43 questions with multiple choice responses. The second survey instrument was a self-administered open-ended questionnaire that required the respondents to record their own explanation of the meaning of each sign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide - Second Edition explores the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of roundabouts. The report also addresses issues that may be useful in helping to explain the trade-offs associated with roundabouts. This report updates the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, based on experience gained in the United States since that guide was published in 2000.

Book Roadway Delineation Practices Handbook

Download or read book Roadway Delineation Practices Handbook written by James Migletz and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook was developed to assist design, traffic, and maintenance engineering personnel in making determinations about roadway delineation systems, including the appropriate system for a given situation, when a system has reached the end of its useful life, and how to maintain a quality delineation system. This handbook supplements the policies and standards provided in the "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" by offering implementation guidelines for the standards. The contents cover current and newly developed devices, materials, and installation equipment, presenting each item's expected performance based on actual experience or field and laboratory tests.

Book Determining the Effectiveness of Pavement Marking Materials

Download or read book Determining the Effectiveness of Pavement Marking Materials written by Benjamin H. Cottrell and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the safety, motorist opinion, and cost-effectiveness of pavement marking materials used by the Virginia Department of Transportation and to develop guidelines, where possible, as to when each type of material should be used. Interstate and primary road segments that had been remarked with a different type of pavement marking material were identified to perform a before-and-after accident analysis. When possible, segments that were remarked using the same pavement marking material were included to provide comparison sections. The number of sites and accident count data were insufficient to support a finding that the use of a particular pavement marking material reduces the number of target accidents. The results of a motorist survey indicated that the participating drivers were more satisfied with pavement markings with higher retroreflectivity values than those with lower values. Participating drivers over the age of 65 were generally less satisfied with the brightness of the pavement markings than were participating drivers under the age of 65. Using a large contract for paint was the most cost-effective for two-lane roads under most volume conditions and four- and six-lane low-volume roads. Using polyurea and a large contract for paint were the most cost-effective for high-volume two- and four-lane roads. Polyurea and waffle tape were the more cost-effective durable markings for high-volume six-lane roads. Changes in the use of pavement markings were recommended. Specifically, the Virginia Department of Transportation should (1) consider increasing the use of large paint contracts and minimizing its use of small paint contracts when possible; (2) consider a performance-based specification for durable markings; (3) continue consideration of a holistic approach for pavement management and markings, and (4) re-evaluate its pavement marking policy and include the recommendations of this study.

Book Review of the Effectiveness Location Design and Safety of Passing Lanes in Kansas

Download or read book Review of the Effectiveness Location Design and Safety of Passing Lanes in Kansas written by Madaniyo Mutabazi and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing passing lanes in place on Kansas highways were studied from an operational and safety perspective. It was found that they generally operated well, improved operational efficiency and were well liked by the public. Determination of highway segments that would need passing lane(s) to improve their operational performance should be accomplished in a two-level process; i.e., Network and Project Level. At the Network Level, two-lane rural highway segments that operate at a level-of-service below a predefined acceptable level are identified. At the Project Level, highway segments identified at the network level are ranked for the purpose of prioritization. The number of highway segment passing lane projects to be implemented will depend on the funding level. At the project level, a detailed economic analysis of different passing lane lengths, spacing, and configurations can be undertaken to set parameters with an objective of minimizing percent time delay. Computer simulation using TWOPAS is a valuable tool to use at this level. The location of passing lanes should be planned along with their spacing. The location guidelines are based in part on the results of field studies, engineering judgement, and "common sense." The location guidelines can be grouped into four main considerations: safety, improved traffic performance, a design consistent with driver's expectation, and minimized construction costs. Spacing between any two successive passing lanes is intended to make the passing lanes function as a coordinated system. The effective length of a passing lane depends on traffic volume and composition, passing lane length, and downstream passing opportunities. The report also addresses the geometric elements relating to passing lanes, including lane and taper length and cross sections, and pavement marking and signing.
