Book William Forsythe s Postdramatic Dance Theater

Download or read book William Forsythe s Postdramatic Dance Theater written by Freya Vass and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes choreographer William Forsythe’s choreographic and scenographic processes as a holistic lens through which to view dance as a fundamentally visuo-sonic art form and choreography as a form of perceptual experimentation. In doing so, it reveals how the made worlds within which postdramatic dance is situated influence how choreography is perceived. Resonating with ecological perspectives but also drawing on an extensive range of cognitive research approaches, the volume’s choreo-scenographic perspective emphasizes the importance of considering the expanded scenography of lighting, sound, space, scenic elements, costume, and performer movement when analyzing the sensory and cognitive perception of dance. The volume provides a first book-length cognitive study of both an individual choreographer and the aesthetics of postdramatic theatre. It also satisfies a need for more dedicated scholarship on Forsythe, whose extensive and varied array of groundbreaking ballets and dance theater works for the Ballett Frankfurt (1984-2004), The Forsythe Company (2005-15), and as an independent choreographer have made him a key figure in 20th/21st century dance.

Book The Warm Heart of Africa

Download or read book The Warm Heart of Africa written by Kevin M. Denny and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Warm Heart of Africa, fifty years in the making, is the story of Susan, one of the first Peace Corps Volunteers. It is also the story of Peter, a ninety-two year old African who became her salvation. She meets him soon after attempting to quit the Peace Corps...but failing. Peter is at first reticent to talk of his past, for fear of opening old wounds. With time, he learns to trust and slowly shares his stories with Susan, beginning with, "My father was the first man to see Livingstone and he almost killed him!" Later he tells her how Yao slave traders invaded his village when he was six, burning houses and killing the very old, the very young and the weak - those who would not endure the cruel march to the Indian Ocean. He recalls the bitter memory of a slaver dragging his mother from his grasp to be sold for a sultan's harem, never to be seen again. He then shares with Susan how he and his father were auctioned at the slave market of Zanzibar and crammed into an Arab dhow sailing to Yemen, to be sold once again, his only consolation being that his father was still with him. Two days in, a frigate fired a shot across the bow and Arabs began throwing their cargo into the sea in the grim hope of out sailing the frigate. Peter, too small to be of notice, watched in hiding as an ugly Arab hurled his father into the sea. Then a cannon shot from the frigate demasted the dhow, hurling him into the sea. Unable to swim, he survived by clutching the splintered mast until he was plucked from the sea by men in blue coat who brought him back to their frigate where he took his first step in his twenty-one years in the service of the Queen. As major domo to a young officer, Horace Smith-Dorrien, he would come to see battle against Zulus, Afridis, Pathans, Boers and Sepoys, before returning home to start a life in the service of God, a story he slowly and painfully shares with Susan, like him, a stranger in a strange land. The author met Peter and was Susan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brooke is a successful cop in New Jersey but when her Captain gets a call from up north, she has no choice but to help with an investigation in New York. The NYPD are suffering from a breach and some rampant gang related activity. Brooke's entire career as a cop is erased and she's sent up as a deep undercover agent. This trilogy contains Brooklyn Nights, Brooklyn Heights and Brooklyn Fights in one three book bundle! Brooklyn Nights Brooke is a beat cop in New Jersey. She's from a family of cops, starting with her grandfather and she's damn proud of it. When the New York Police Department suffers a horrible cybersecurity breach that reveals all their undercover agents, the Captain of Brooke's precinct asks her if she wants to help. She is a bit hesitant at first, having never gone undercover, but Captain Bolt reassures her that she has the skills to succeed. When she agrees, Captain Bolt informs her that they are running on very limited information. Per the NYPD the breach was from hackers, hired by a mysterious gang that has slowly engulfed Brooklyn. The NYPD don't even have a main suspect, or even a name on the gang. This is a trial by fire, as Brooke goes up to unfamiliar territory, with no resources and her history wiped from the New Jersey police systems. Only a select few will know of and assist with Brooke's undercover operation. Can Brooke handle the heat or will she be burned as she spends her Brooklyn nights undercover? Brooklyn Heights Brooke is deep undercover and she's been promoted to manage a more prestigious gang territory, Brooklyn Heights. She hasn't heard from her own squadron in a while, and she's got quite a lot to tell them. Her instincts tell her that something is wrong but she knows she has to ignore them if she wants to survive. Lamar and Marcus aren't like the usual run of the mill gangsters she's used to. As she becomes more engrossed in their lives, she begins to wonder if they're getting outside help. They've split their empire into multiple gangs, with no true center that she can pinpoint. In addition, they've built several businesses of their own to launder their money. Brooke can't help but think that there's another higher power at work with the isolation they've created. Unbeknownst to her, Captain Bolt and the team supporting her are also finding strange activity within the police ranks in Brooklyn. Does Brooke manage to use her newfound position at Brooklyn Heights to uncover more of Lamar and Marcus' thuggish empire, or is she headed for a trap created by the very police she works for? Brooklyn Fights Brooke's cover has been blown and all her investigative work has gone straight to hell. She has nowhere to go as her own undercover team has been arrested by a corrupt deputy colonel. With only a soon to be discovered safehouse left, Brooke has her back against the wall. Her only option left is to fight back with whatever she has left. She knows she won't be able to take on the gang she was investigating but she can bring down the cop that put her and her team in this position. But the only way to get to him is to first figure out what his connection is with the lawyer that blew her cover...
