Book Educating the Unconstant Rabble

Download or read book Educating the Unconstant Rabble written by Ann McGruer and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The English Revolution was a revolution in reading.’ For the first time more people had access to books and other printed media containing a far broader spectrum of information than had previously been the case. But an increase in access to material meant an increase in discussion and expression of opinions, some of which had the potential to be detrimental to the stability of the state. It was therefore in the interest of the state to restrict access to this material to those that possessed the requisite educational training with which to understand the ideas and opinions now in circulation. For Samuel Hartlib, John Dury, Johan Amos Comenius, John Hall, John Milton and Marchamont Nedham however, the answer lay not in restricting access to information and education, but rather in the extension of educational opportunity beyond the governing elite of the country in order to equip the emerging ‘reading public’ with the skills they needed to take an active part in the political life of the country. In the opinion of these writers it was only through effective educational reform that the political and religious growth of the country could continue. A strong theme emerging within the tracts discussed in this book is that an adequately reformed educational system will provide the state with an able and useful populace on which they can depend in times of crisis. Allied to this is the notion that the populace is entitled to receive a level of education appropriate to their abilities and talents and that the state bears a responsibility to play at least some part in providing that education, whether formally or through the dissemination of information through the printing press. As will be seen from the discussion of the literature produced at the time, the ideas and reforms suggested within these tracts were the continuation of an intellectual context in which the development of learning and the expansion of knowledge were seen as paramount. Drawing on the religious ideas of the millennium, as well as the philosophical ideas of Bacon especially, the writers to be considered here sought the reformation of the educational system, as well as a broader series of social reforms, in order to perfect the Reformation and make England ready for the new age.

Book excerpt: 'Alice Hunt brilliantly reanimates this most extraordinary decade. It is a gripping tale of political and cultural crisis but also one of joy and hopeful innovation, told with eloquence and passion.' MALCOLM GASKILL 'A magisterial, compelling and eye-opening biography of Britain's great and extraordinary experiment.' SUZANNAH LIPSCOMB Events moved with giddying speed in the 1650s. After the execution of Charles I, 'dangerous' monarchy was abolished and the House of Lords was dismissed, sending shock waves across the kingdom. These revolutionary acts set in motion a decade of bewildering change and instability, under the leadership of the soldier-statesman Oliver Cromwell. England's unique and distinctive republican experiment may have been short-lived, but it changed the course of British history. It transformed the relationship between England, Scotland and Ireland, reset the compact between the monarch and the people, and re-fashioned the story the British told - and continue to tell - about themselves. REPUBLIC is a richly engrossing year-by-year account of this exhilarating and daring period. It tells the story of what Britain's republic was really like: why it failed, but also, what it got right.

She then describes public reaction to royal policy and court Catholicism and the use parliamentary leaders made of anti-Catholicism from 1640 to 1642. In this first study to focus on both the perceptions and the reality of popish plotting," Hibbard concludes that behind the exaggerated claims lay genuine anxieties that historians should begin to take seriously." Download or read book For Zion s Sake written by Paul Richard Wilkinson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By locating Christian Zionism firmly within the Evangelical tradition, Paul Wilkinson takes issue with those who have portrayed it as a "totally unbiblical menace" and as the "roadmap to Armageddon." Charting in detail its origins and historical development, he argues that Christian Zionism lays the biblical foundation for Israel's restoration and the return of Christ. No one has contributed more to this cause than its leading architect and patron, John Nelson Darby, an "uncompromising champion for Christ's glory and God's truth." This groundbreaking book challenges decades of misrepresentation and scholarship, exploding the myth that Darby stole the doctrine of the pre-tribulation Rapture from his contemporaries. By revealing the man and his message, Paul Wilkinson vindicates Darby and spotlights the imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ as the centerpiece of his theology.
