Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Vision book for youth 9 - 15 years old tells the exciting, dramatic story of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the order he founded, the Society of Jesus. As a young man, Ignatius had dreams of an adventurous life as a soldier. His dreams, however, did not come true the way he had hoped. Seriously wounded in battle, the soldier Ignatius had a profound conversion to Christ during his period of healing and recovery. He abandoned a promising career in the military and dedicated the rest of his life to the service of Christ and the Church. This book tells of his starting one of the most influential orders in the church, and gives a graphic account of his adventures, his many encounters with popes, kings and emperors, and the great work the Jesuits did in spreading the Gospel. Book Jesus and John Wayne How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation

Download or read book Jesus and John Wayne How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation written by Kristin Kobes Du Mez and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The “paradigm-influencing” book (Christianity Today) that is fundamentally transforming our understanding of white evangelicalism in America. Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping, revisionist history of the last seventy-five years of white evangelicalism, revealing how evangelicals have worked to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism—or in the words of one modern chaplain, with “a spiritual badass.” As acclaimed scholar Kristin Du Mez explains, the key to understanding this transformation is to recognize the centrality of popular culture in contemporary American evangelicalism. Many of today’s evangelicals might not be theologically astute, but they know their VeggieTales, they’ve read John Eldredge’s Wild at Heart, and they learned about purity before they learned about sex—and they have a silver ring to prove it. Evangelical books, films, music, clothing, and merchandise shape the beliefs of millions. And evangelical culture is teeming with muscular heroes—mythical warriors and rugged soldiers, men like Oliver North, Ronald Reagan, Mel Gibson, and the Duck Dynasty clan, who assert white masculine power in defense of “Christian America.” Chief among these evangelical legends is John Wayne, an icon of a lost time when men were uncowed by political correctness, unafraid to tell it like it was, and did what needed to be done. Challenging the commonly held assumption that the “moral majority” backed Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020 for purely pragmatic reasons, Du Mez reveals that Trump in fact represented the fulfillment, rather than the betrayal, of white evangelicals’ most deeply held values: patriarchy, authoritarian rule, aggressive foreign policy, fear of Islam, ambivalence toward #MeToo, and opposition to Black Lives Matter and the LGBTQ community. A much-needed reexamination of perhaps the most influential subculture in this country, Jesus and John Wayne shows that, far from adhering to biblical principles, modern white evangelicals have remade their faith, with enduring consequences for all Americans.

Always without means and only miles from running out of fuel and faith, he always finds a way provided to make it to the next town and the next need. And as his mission unfolds, a vision of divine order and infinite love begins to emerge from the endless roads, bone-weary fatigue, and human misery he encounters on his epic voyage. His efforts are not always fruitful, yet in a higher sense they never fail to bear fruit. Jesus Trucking Company is a modern parable of sacrifice and faith, suffering and redemption. In its pages human drama and divine Providence are masterfully met in a story that haunts us with its simple beauty and convicts us with its powerful truth.

Book Jesus to the Rescue

Download or read book Jesus to the Rescue written by Joshua & Chelsea Barnes and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 22, 2012, the Chisholm Trail preschool class learned about the fiery furnace from the book of Daniel in the Bible. They were asked to paint a picture of an angel for their craft. Daniel Barnes, age two, painted the picture on the front cover. (He had only scribbled before that day.) On August 4, 2012, just two weeks after he painted his picture, tragedy struck. Daniel accidentally drowned at his third birthday party. God didn't reveal what the painting actually was until after Daniel had gone to heaven. All the extraordinary details of Daniel being taken to heaven are in his miraculous painting. Daniel had been wearing the exact color orange trunks and shirt as in the painting on the child (center of painting). Josh had jumped in from the side of the pool, just as the yellow person is jumping in the painting (far left). Daniel physically painted his angel that swooped down and rescued him that day, but God was guiding every stroke of that brush.

Book excerpt: Find God’s vision for your job. Reclaim God’s vision for your life. Many Christians fall victim to one of two main problems when it comes to work: either they are idle in their work, or they have made an idol of it. Both of these mindsets are deadly misunderstandings of how God intends for us to think about our employment. In The Gospel at Work, Sebastian Traeger and Greg Gilbert unpack the powerful ways in which the gospel can transform how we do what we do, releasing us from the cultural pressures of both an all-consuming devotion and a punch-in, punch-out mentality—in order to find the freedom of a work ethic rooted in serving Christ. You’ll find answers to some of the tough questions that Christians in the workplace often ask: What factors should matter most in choosing a job? What gospel principles should shape my thinking about how to treat my boss, my co-workers, and my employees? Is full-time Christian work more valuable than my job? Is it okay to be motivated by money? How do you prioritize—or balance—work, family and church responsibilities? Solidly grounded in the gospel, The Gospel at Work confronts both our idleness at work and our idolatry of work with a challenge of its own—to remember that whom we work for is infinitely more important than what we do.

Book The Harvest Prayer of Jesus

Download or read book The Harvest Prayer of Jesus written by Edward N. Gross and published by . This book was released on 2020-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am delighted to write the foreword for the book, The Harvest Prayer of Jesus, by Edward N. Gross. We need to understand the subject of prayer if we desire a movement of God. Prayer is the key to all the Kingdom movements around the world. Of all the Kingdom movements that I know, none of them was started before leaders started praying. So, if we want to see a Kingdom movement happen, we have to be on our knees earnestly seeking God until we see His heart's desire fulfilled in the launching of sustainable, disciple-making movements (DMMs). So many books have been written about prayer, and conferences have been called for prayer. While these are all good, many, sadly, have been turned into programs. Prayer is not a religious program; it's a lifestyle of a believer. We spiritually breathe and engage God through our prayers. What is happening to and through others, will not happen until we earnestly pray and commit ourselves to the prayer that gives birth to a movement.

It's a question we're asking more than ever before, from the front lines of business to the front page of the newspaper to the front row of the classroom. But our answers tend to be incomplete-personal anecdotes, media narratives, or simply revisiting the usual suspects. Christian-Owned Companies, the stories of 50 for-profit businesses, is the most thorough investigation of the question to date, uncovering eight practical answers. For business leaders, it's a road map. For academics, it's a theory. For students, it's a curriculum. And for a confused culture, it's a corrective to the stereotypes of the left and the right. Join Professor Zigarelli for an in-depth look at what Christian-owned companies really do and how they do it.
