This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy Stone was a prominent U.S. orator, abolitionist, suffragist, and a vocal advocate and organizer promoting rights for women. In 1847, Stone became the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree. She spoke out for women's rights and against slavery at a time when women were discouraged and prevented from public speaking. Stone was known for using her birth name after marriage, the custom at the time being for women to take their husband's surname. Stone assisted in establishing the Woman's National Loyal League to help pass the Thirteenth Amendment and thereby abolish slavery, after which she helped form the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA), which built support for a woman suffrage Constitutional amendment by winning woman suffrage at the state and local levels.

Book Stories of Women s Suffrage

Download or read book Stories of Women s Suffrage written by Charlotte Guillain and published by Capstone Classroom. This book was released on 2015 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women used to have few rights. All the important decisions in their lives were made by men. They could not vote and give their opinion on who should run the country. By the middle of the 19th century, more and more women were starting to ask why not? These are the stories of five trailblazers who achieved amazing things in difficult circumstances: Elizabeth Cady Stanton began campaigning for women s rights when she was refused entry to a convention because she was a woman. Susan B. Anthony cast her vote knowing she'd be arrested. Clementina Black organized a strike at a factory that paid women low wages. Carrie Chapman Catt traveled the world promoting the need for women s suffrage. Emmeline Pankhurst led a march along Downing Street in London, petitioning the vote for women. Many of the rights women have today are thanks to their actions. They helped change society's image of women forever."--Provided by publisher.

Book Women Race Class

Download or read book Women Race Class written by Angela Y. Davis and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most important scholars and civil rights activist icon, a powerful study of the women’s liberation movement and the tangled knot of oppression facing Black women. “Angela Davis is herself a woman of undeniable courage. She should be heard.”—The New York Times Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.
