Book Investment in Manufacturing Exchange rates and External Exposure

Download or read book Investment in Manufacturing Exchange rates and External Exposure written by Jose Campa and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the linkage between exchange rates and investment. emphasizing the role of producer exposure through export sales and through imported inputs into production. For two-digit United States manufacturing sectors we present time series of export shares and imported input shares. On average. manufacturing sectors have evolved from being primarily export exposed in the 1970s to being primarily import exposed by the early 1980s. Due to this pattern in exposure. exchange rate appreciations reduced investment in durable goods sectors in the 1970s and stimulated investment after 1983. By contrast nondurables sectors tended to absorb exchange rate changes in price over cost markups. Exchange rate volatility depressed investment but the effects were quantitatively small.

Book Exchange Rates Financial Constraints and Investment in the U S Manufacturing Sector

Download or read book Exchange Rates Financial Constraints and Investment in the U S Manufacturing Sector written by Rex M. Ballinger and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation then provides estimates of the impact of the real exchange rate on investment at the firm level in U.S. manufacturing for 1995-2010, using a modified accelerator model that controls for the user cost of capital and financial (liquidity) constraints. The dissertation corrects biases in previous micro-level measures of user cost and shows that using chain-weighted user costs eliminates the endogeneity that is found with time-varying weights. Although the trade-weighted real dollar indexes are not significant in the entire sample, there are significant negative effects of dollar appreciation in subsamples defined by high degrees of export orientation, imported input use, import penetration, and all three combined, especially using the indexes weighted by total trade and by imports. Results for whether the dollar index is significant in levels or growth rates vary, indicating some ambiguity about whether the exchange rate affects desired capital stocks, liquidity constraints, or simply the rate at which firms adjust toward their desired capital stocks.

Book Multinationals and Foreign Investment in Economic Development

Download or read book Multinationals and Foreign Investment in Economic Development written by E. Graham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past twenty or so years, foreign direct investment (FDI) flows have increased at rates approaching the astounding, especially so during the 1990s. While much of the increase was due to unprecedented cross-border mergers and acquisitions among high-income countries, the amount of FDI flowing to developing nations also grew substantially. This volume examines the economics of this FDI to developing countries. Some chapters are theoretical in nature, others empirical, and still others are largely policy-oriented. Topics covered include whether FDI makes an autonomous contribution to growth in these nations and whether or not 'spillovers' are generated by this investments. Also covered are effects of policy intervention by governments on FDI flows and whether non-economic factors (e.g. cultural factors) might figure as determinants of location of FDI.

Book Exchange Rate Exposure

Download or read book Exchange Rate Exposure written by Kathryn M. Dominguez and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we examine the relationship between exchange rate movements and firm value. We estimate the exchange rate exposure of publicly listed firms in a sample of eight (non-US) industrialized and emerging markets, and find that a significant percentage of these firms are indeed exposed. These results differ substantially from most previous studies in the literature that find little evidence of exposure. In robustness checks we find that: (i) the choice of exchange rate matters, and using the trade-weighted exchange rate is likely to understate the extent of exposure, (ii) conditioning on the value-weighted vs. the equally-weighted market index has little effect on estimated exposure, while conditioning on the international index does change the estimate of exposure, (iii) the extent of exposure is not a result of a spurious correlation between random variables with high variances, (iv) exposure increases with the return horizon, (v) within a country and within an industry, exposure coefficients are roughly evenly split between positive and negative values, (vi) averaging across the (absolute value of the) significant exposure coefficients in our sample of countries, we find an exposure coefficient of about 0.5, (vii) the extent of exposure is not sensitive to the sample period, but the set of firms that is exposed does vary over time, and (viii) the sign of the exposure coefficients changes across subperiods for about half of the firms of our sample. We find that exposure is not systematically related to firm size, industry affiliation, multinational status, foreign sales, international assets or industry-level trade.

Book Exchange Rate Regimes and Location

Download or read book Exchange Rate Regimes and Location written by Mr.Luca Antonio Ricci and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the effects of fixed versus flexible exchange rates on firms’ location choices and on countries’ specialization patterns. In a two-country, two-differentiated-goods monetary model, demand, supply, and monetary (as well as exchange rate) shocks arise after wages are set and prices are optimally chosen. The paper finds that countries are more specialized under flexible than fixed rates, and that the pattern of specialization is not uniquely defined by trade models but depends also on the exchange rate regime. The adoption of fixed exchange rates endogenously increases the desirability of this currency area by reducing the shock asymmetry. These results also shed light on the effects of exchange rate variability on trade.

Book Financial Management from an Emerging Market Perspective

Download or read book Financial Management from an Emerging Market Perspective written by Soner Gokten and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main reasons to name this book as Financial Management from an Emerging Market Perspective is to show the main differences of financial theory and practice in emerging markets other than the developed ones. Our many years of learning, teaching, and consulting experience have taught us that the theory of finance differs in developed and emerging markets. It is a well-known fact that emerging markets do not always share the same financial management problems with the developed ones. This book intends to show these differences, which could be traced to several characteristics unique to emerging markets, and these unique characteristics could generate a different view of finance theory in a different manner. As a consequence, different financial decisions, arrangements, institutions, and practices may evolve in emerging markets over time. The purpose of this book is to provide practitioners and academicians with a working knowledge of the different financial management applications and their use in an emerging market setting. Six main topics regarding the financial management applications in emerging markets are covered, and the context of these topics are "Capital Structure," "Market Efficiency and Market Models," "Merger and Acquisitions and Corporate Governance," "Working Capital Management," "Financial Economics and Digital Currency," and "Real Estate and Health Finance."
