Book Visualization of Flow Past a Model of the CF 18 Aircraft in a Water Tunnel

Download or read book Visualization of Flow Past a Model of the CF 18 Aircraft in a Water Tunnel written by Warren Robert Dunn and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incompressible flow past a 1:48 scale model of the CF-18 fighter aircraft was studied in a water tunnel at the University of Ottawa. Flow visualization records were obtained for flow around different stores, the Leading Edge Extension (LEX) vortex, and the forebody vortex, at various angles of attack. The stores were mostly studied in the low angle of attack range between $\alpha$ = $-$1$\sp\circ$ and $\alpha$ = 5$\sp\circ$. At these angles, their effect on the flow was local. Decreasing the spacing between stores caused the flow to slow down considerably because of the interaction of the separated flow on the wing with the boundary layers of the individual stores. The LEX vortex became stronger as the angle of attack was increased, and the location of its breakdown moved upstream. The breakdown location showed good correlation with results of other model and full-scale studies. The forebody vortex was weaker than the LEX vortex, and was consistently drawn towards the LEX until the two vortices began interacting. The variation of the LEX vortex bursting location with angle of attack is only weakly sensitive to Reynolds number and, therefore, the water tunnel tests can provide a good simulation of full-scale flow characteristics. On the other hand, flow characteristics near surfaces change substantially with increasing Reynolds number, so that the water tunnel results in such regions must be viewed with reservation, when considering their relevance to the high Reynolds number flow around the aircraft. Book Calculation of High Angle of Attack Aerodynamics of Fighter Configurations

Download or read book Calculation of High Angle of Attack Aerodynamics of Fighter Configurations written by Chuan-Tau Edward Lan and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computational method for lateral-directional aerodynamics of fighter configuration is developed. The leading edge vortices are represented by free vortex filaments which are adjusted iteratively to satisfy the force-free condition. The forebody vortex separation, both symmetrical and asymmetrical, is calculated using slender body theory. Effect of boundary layer separation on lifting surfaces is accounted for using the effective sectional angles of attack. The latter are obtained iteratively by matching the nonlinear sectional lift with the computed resulted based on lifting surface theory. Results for several fighter configurations are employed for comparison with available data. It is shown that the present method produces resonable results in predicting sideslip derivatives, while role and yaw rate derivatives do not compare very well with forced oscillation test data at high angles of attack. Industrial usage of this has produced mixed results. At this time, the use of these methods in a production manner is not recommended.

This book was released on 2018-07-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-speed wind-tunnel tests were conducted in the Langley 12-Foot Low-Speed Tunnel on a model of the Boeing Multirole Fighter (BMRF) aircraft. This single-seat, single-engine configuration was intended to be an F-16 replacement that would incorporate many of the design goals and advanced technologies of the F-22. Its mission requirements included supersonic cruise without afterburner, reduced observability, and the ability to attack both air-to-air and air-to-ground targets. So that it would be effective in all phases of air combat, the ability to maneuver at angles of attack up to and beyond maximum lift was also desired. Traditional aerodynamic yaw controls, such as rudders, are typically ineffective at these higher angles of attack because they are usually located in the wake from the wings and fuselage. For this reason, this study focused on investigating forebody-mounted controls that produces yawing moments by modifying the strong vortex flowfield being shed from the forebody at high angles of attack. Two forebody strakes were tested that varied in planform and chordwise location. Various patterns of porosity in the forebody skin were also tested that differed in their radial coverage and chordwise location. The tests were performed at a dynamic pressure of 4 lb/ft(exp 2) over an angle-of-attack range of -4 deg to 72 deg and a sideslip range of -10 deg to 10 deg. Static force data, static pressures on the surface of the forebody, and videotapes of flow-visualization using laser-illuminated smoke were obtained. Fears, Scott P. Unspecified Center...

Book An Experimental Investigation of a Fighter Aircraft Model at High Angles of Attack

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of a Fighter Aircraft Model at High Angles of Attack written by David Humbert Leedy and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A low speed wind tunnel investigation was conducted to examine the aerodynamic characteristics of the flowfield around a three percent scale YF-17 lightweight fighter prototype model at high angles of attack using flow visualization and force and moment measurements. Smoke filaments, injected into the wind tunnel test section, were illuminated by a laser sheet to highlight flow phenomena about the model. Force and moment measurements were made using a precision six-component strain gage balance. The investigation marked the first attempt at qualitative flow analysis using the laser sheet flow visualization system recently installed in the Naval Postgraduate School low speed wind tunnel facility. The investigation was undertaken to specifically identify flow phenomena and/or regions of interest that may have bearing on the design and performance of supermaneuverable aircraft. The data indicate a good correlation between the observed flow phenomena and force and moment measurements at various angles of attack, thus establishing the credibility of such experimental investigations for high angle of attack aerodynamic research.
