Deutschland ist durch zahlreiche verschiedene Migrationsbewegungen zu einem Einwanderungsland geworden. Die Gründe für die Migration bzw. die verschiedenen Migrationsbewegungen nach Deutschland, welche in die Vergangenheit zurück reichen und bis heute vonstattengehen, können unterschiedlicher Natur sein. Grundsätzlich lässt sich die Migration aufgrund der Erwerbstätigkeit, Ausbildungsgründen, humanitären oder auch familiären Gründen identifizieren. Aufgrund des demografischen Wandels und der damit einhergehenden fortschreitenden Alterung der Gesellschaft steht Deutschland vor großen Herausforderungen. Während die Zahl an älteren Menschen steigt, nimmt die Zahl der jungen Menschen ab. Folgend sinkt der Bevölkerungsanteil der Menschen im erwerbstätigen Alter zunehmend. Im Jahr 2030 werden demnach schätzungsweise 3,9 Millionen weniger Menschen im erwerbsfähigen Alter sein. Bis zum Jahr 2060 wird der fehlende Anteil sogar auf 10,2 Millionen Menschen geschätzt. Bereits in verschiedenen Branchen, wie beispielsweise im Pflegeberuf, ist ein Fachkräftemangel eindeutig zu erkennen. Die Einwanderung von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund stellt für Deutschland großes Potenzial für die Bekämpfung des Fachkräftemangels dar. Demnach profitiert Deutschland von der Zuwanderung da zusätzliche Fachkräfte generiert werden können. Mit der Zuwanderung von Menschen aus dem Ausland kommen auch vermehrt Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund nach Deutschland, welche die deutsche Sprache nicht bzw. nur unzureichend beherrschen. Laut der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung lag im Jahr 2020 der Anteil aller Kindern unter fünf Jahren mit Migrationshintergrund in Deutschland bei ca. 40 Prozent. Der Institution Schule kommt dementsprechend eine besondere Rolle zu. Der wachsende Anteil an Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund in Deutschland löst die Notwendigkeit einer adäquaten interkulturellen Pädagogik in den Bildungseinrichtungen aus.
