Book The Insect Spider Collections of the World

Download or read book The Insect Spider Collections of the World written by Ross H. Arnett, Jr. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993, completely rewritten, this second edition includes a list of all 210 countries of the world and all of the islands, with comments on the existence of insect and spider collections, both public and private. These listings are arranged alphabetically by country, state/province, and city, with private collections listed under the public collection with which they are registered. Part II of the directory is an alphabetical list of the codes assigned to each of the collections described in Part I. This list is also cross-referenced to variations of the codes used in other works, which will eliminate any confusion over this duplication. This classic work provides a ready reference to all collections and is required by all insect and spider systematists.

Book The Naturalist s Almanac

Download or read book The Naturalist s Almanac written by Mark M. Peyton and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature is cyclic with the same things occurring at the same time each and every year, whether it be the night sky, migration of birds, or the emergence of miller moths. In The Naturalist's Almanac, Peyton takes you through the year, month by month, looking at the various cycles of nature that are associated with each month. The year starts with wolves and ends with the discussion of reindeer. In between are recaps of weather events, stories of different constellations, and multiple natural history essays about a variety of birds, insects, and other animals. In addition, Peyton talks about the impact of smallpox on the New World, the drama associated with the development of vaccines for polio, irrigation, the problem with longitude, and the determination of the birthday of Earth. The Naturalist's Almanac is a look at nature as we once again make a trip around the sun.

Book Current Advances in Scarabaeoidea Research

Download or read book Current Advances in Scarabaeoidea Research written by Brett Ratcliffe and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scarabaeoidea is one of the largest superfamilies in the Coleoptera and includes approximately 2,200 genera and about 32,000 species worldwide. Scarabs have diversified into most habitats, and they are fungivores, herbivores, necrophages, coprophages, saprophages, and carnivores. Some scarabs exhibit various levels of parental care and sociality. Some are myrmecophilous or termitophilous. Many possess extravagant horns, others are able to roll into a compact ball, and still others are highly armored for inquiline life. Some are important agricultural pests that may destroy crops, while others are used in the biological control of dung and dung flies. Scarabaeoids are popular beetles due to their large size, bright colors, and interesting natural histories. Because of the popularity of the group, there exists an erroneous impression that the superfamily is taxonomically well known. However, even with a lengthy history of study, the group is in real need of continuing research. The papers in this volume cover a wide array of research topics on Scarabaeoidea, including evolutionary relationships, character trait evolution, species concepts, descriptions of new taxa, keys for identification, nomenclature, historical biogeography, methods, and basic life history information. These papers are a valuable contribution to our knowledge of scarabaeoids, and they will provide a foundation for future research.
