Book Effective Inquiry for Innovative Engineering Design

Download or read book Effective Inquiry for Innovative Engineering Design written by Ozgur Eris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-01-31 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective Inquiry for Innovative Engineering Design presents empirical evidence for this claim. It demonstrates a unique attribute of design thinking by identifying and characterizing a class of questions called "Generative Design Questions". These questions are frequently asked by designers in dialog. Their use constitutes a fundamental cognitive mechanism in design thinking. Their discovery stems from another finding of the work: a conceptual duality between questions and decisions that is engraved deep within the design process. This duality challenges a view that treats designing as decision making. Decisions form the tip of the iceberg; Questions keep it afloat: Can an effective decision making process be performed without having high quality information? Can high quality information be acquired and generated without performing an effective inquiry process? The answer to both questions is no, and underscores the importance of our quest to better understand the role of inquiry in design.

Book Innovation Research in Technology and Engineering Management

Download or read book Innovation Research in Technology and Engineering Management written by Marc J. de Vries and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy may not seem to be an obvious source to discover methods for successful product innovation management. However, this book shows that systematic reflection on the nature of product innovation management, supported by insights from the philosophy of technology, can illuminate the innovation process in technology and engineering. Presenting methodological guidelines and philosophical reflections, this book guides readers through each phase of product innovation. At each step, ideas from the philosophy of technology are translated into practical guidelines for managing these processes. The book works through the philosophical perspectives on innovation, methods in innovation design and research, and the value and ethical implications of innovation. Bridging the gap between philosophical context and practical methodologies, this book will be highly valuable for postgraduate students and academics researching and teaching innovation and philosophy of technology.

Book Idea Engineering

Download or read book Idea Engineering written by La Verne Abe Harris and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers and technologists often operate from a worldview of "ones and zeros." The mission of this book is to interject the colorful world of creative thinking to help engineers and technologists learn to think and work differently. Thus, "idea engineering" becomes the driving force, transforming engineers and technologists into innovators and entrepreneurs, using case studies and anecdotes from first-hand experience. The material in this book is organized to take the reader through basic concepts and techniques of creative thinking and innovation, to better solve engineering and technological challenges. It provides an overall understanding of who, what, why, when, and how "idea engineering" can transform an individual and a company to formulate and apply the best possibilities. The target audience is university-level students and practitioners, especially upper division undergraduates and graduate students in engineering education, industrial engineering, engineering technology, science, and technology; and then engineering practitioners from an engineering, technology, or science background. It can be purchased individually as a text, professional trade or reference title, or accessed within a collection libraries and professional organizations would buy. In addition, the material in this book can supplement coursework in business, communication, management, and applied creative arts. As a core or supplemental text, it would make a great foundation for a one-credit course—or a part of any three-credit capstone design course or seminar—stressing creative thinking and innovation. It would also be a good overview for any layman interested in learning about creative thinking and innovation.

Book Innovation Engineering

Download or read book Innovation Engineering written by Ikhlaq Sidhu and published by Version. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation Engineering is a practical guide to creating anything new - whether in a large firm, research lab, new venture or even in an innovative student project. As an executive, are you happy with the return on investment of your innovative projects? As an innovator, do you feel confident that you can navigate obstacles and achieve success with your innovative project? The reality is that most innovation projects fail. The challenge in developing any new technology, application, or venture is that the innovator must be able to "execute while also learning". Innovation Engineering, developed and used at UC Berkeley, provides the tactical process, leadership, and behaviors necessary for successful innovation projects. Our validation tests have shown that teams which properly use Innovation Engineering accomplished their innovative projects approximately 4X faster than and with higher quality results. They also on-board new team members faster, they have much fewer unnecessary meetings, and they even report a more positive outlook on the project itself. Inter-woven between the chapters are real-life case studies with some of the world's most successful innovators to provide context, patterns, and playbooks that you can follow. Highly applied, and very realistic, Innovation Engineering builds on 30 years of technology innovation projects within large firms, advanced development labs, and new ventures at UC Berkeley, in Silicon Valley, and globally. If your goal is to create something new and have it successfully used in real life, this book is for you.

Book Philosophy of Technology after the Empirical Turn

Download or read book Philosophy of Technology after the Empirical Turn written by Maarten Franssen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features 16 essays on the philosophy of technology that discuss its identity, its position in philosophy in general, and the role of empirical studies in philosophical analyses of engineering ethics and engineering practices. This volume is published about fifteen years after Peter Kroes and Anthonie Meijers published a collection of papers under the title The empirical turn in the philosophy of technology, in which they called for a reorientation toward the practice of engineering, and sketched the likely benefits for philosophy of technology of pursuing its major questions in an empirically informed way. The essays in this volume fall apart in two different kinds. One kind follows up on The empirical turn discussion about what the philosophy of technology is all about. It continues the search for the identity of the philosophy of technology by asking what comes after the empirical turn. The other kind of essays follows the call for an empirical turn in the philosophy of technology by showing how it may be realized with regard to particular topics. Together these essays offer the reader an overview of the state of the art of an empirically informed philosophy of technology and of various views on the empirical turn as a stepping stone into the future of the philosophy of technology.
