Book Paul McCartney and His Creative Practice

Download or read book Paul McCartney and His Creative Practice written by Phillip McIntyre and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides fresh insight into the creative practice developed by Paul McCartney over his extended career as a songwriter, record producer and performing musician. It frames its examination of McCartney’s work through the lens of the systems model of creativity developed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and combines this with the research work of Pierre Bourdieu. This systems approach is built around the basic structures of idiosyncratic agents, like McCartney himself, and the choices he has made as a creative individual. It also locates his work within social fields and cultural domains, all crucial aspects of the creative system that McCartney continues to be immersed in. Using this tripartite system, the book includes analysis of McCartney’s creative collaborations with musicians, producers, artists and filmmakers and provides a critical analysis of the Romantic myth which forms a central tenet of popular music. This engaging work will have interdisciplinary appeal to students and scholars of the psychology of creativity, popular music, sociology and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures of McCartney and important people, places, and events in his life. *Includes descriptions of the origins and recordings of some of McCartney's timeless classics, including Penny Lane, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, and Michelle. *Includes a Suggested Playlist of McCartney's greatest songs from his solo career and with the Beatles. *Includes a Bibliography for further reading. In 1964, girls all across the United States filled venues, almost literally screamed their heads off, and fainted en masse. Almost from the second they played the first note, The Beatles would be hit with the resounding screams, which made it impossible for them to even hear themselves sing. When they made their American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in early 1964, they were greeted by young fans who whipped themselves up into such a frenzy that some of them fainted. Beatlemania had struck North America, creating a musical and pop culture phenomenon unlike anything the world had ever seen. In the middle of it all was Paul McCartney, who joined with close friend and bandmate John Lennon to create history's greatest songwriting duo. As the "Cute" Beatle, McCartney was instrumental in creating the soundtrack of the 1960s, while producing some of the world's most timeless classics together with Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. McCartney lacked the controversy of Lennon, the spirituality of Harrison, and the silliness of Starr, but he was unquestionably one of the driving forces behind the Beatles' most productive recording periods, especially on the Beatles' seminal Revolver album. It was also McCartney who tried hardest to keep the Beatles together from 1968-1970, even while his perfectionist attention to detail frequently drove his bandmates crazy. Ultimately, it was McCartney who was the first to publicly announce his departure from the Beatles. Sir Paul may have never topped the highs established by the Beatles, but he has gone on to have the longest and most productive solo career of the four. While that was helped in part by the tragic murder of Lennon in 1980, McCartney has nonetheless remained at the forefront of pop culture since 1970, and the Guinness Book of World Records has recognized him as the most successful recording artist of all time. Indeed, McCartney wrote or co-wrote over 30 #1 hits and has sold over 100 million albums and 100 million singles in his music career. McCartney has provided an uncountable number of anthems, but his popularity has made his life extremely public and the subject of plenty of tabloid fodder, from his causes to his marriages. Legends of Music: The Life and Legacy of Paul McCartney covers McCartney's life and career in detail, both in and out of the studio, while analyzing his lasting legacy. Along with a suggested playlist of McCartney's songs and pictures of important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about Sir Paul like you never have before, in no time at all.

Download or read book What to Listen for in Rock written by Ken Stephenson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concise and engaging analysis of rock music, music theorist Ken Stephenson explores the features that make this internationally popular music distinct from earlier music styles. The author offers a guided tour of rock music from the 1950s to the present, emphasizing the theoretical underpinnings of the style and, for the first time, systematically focusing not on rock music's history or sociology, but on the structural aspects of the music itself. What structures normally happen in rock music? What theoretical systems or models might best explain them? The book addresses these questions and more in chapters devoted to phrase rhythm, scales, key determination, cadences, harmonic palette and succession, and form. Each chapter provides richly detailed analyses of individual rock pieces from groups including Chicago; the Beatles; Emerson, Lake, and Palmer; Kansas; and others. Stephenson shows how rock music is stylistically unique, and he demonstrates how the features that make it distinct have tended to remain constant throughout the past half-century and within most substyles. For music students at the college level and for practicing rock musicians who desire a deeper understanding of their music, this book is an essential resource.

Book Paul McCartney

Download or read book Paul McCartney written by Peter Ames Carlin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-11-03 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed biographer who brought you the rock biography of Bruce Springsteen comes the life of musician Paul McCartney—from his groundbreaking years with the Beatles to Wings to his work as a solo artist and activist. More than a rock star, more than a celebrity, Paul McCartney is a cultural touchstone who helped transform popular music as one half of the legendary Lennon-McCartney songwriting duo. In this definitive biography, Peter Ames Carlin examines McCartney’s entire life, casting new light not just on the Beatles era but also on his years with Wings and his thirty-year relationship with his first wife, Linda McCartney. He takes us on a journey through a tumultuous couple of decades in which Paul struck out on his own as a solo artist, reached the top of the charts with a new band, and once again drew hundreds of thousands of screaming fans to his concerts. Carlin presents McCartney as a musical visionary but also as a layered and conflicted figure as haunted by his own legacy—and particularly his relationship with John Lennon—as he was inspired by it. Built on years of research and fresh, revealing interviews with friends, bandmates, and collaborators spanning McCartney’s entire life, Carlin’s lively biography captures the many faces of the living legend.

Book The Beatles and the Beatlesque A Crossdisciplinary Analysis of Sound Production and Stylistic Impact

Download or read book The Beatles and the Beatlesque A Crossdisciplinary Analysis of Sound Production and Stylistic Impact written by Dario Martinelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beatles and the Beatlesque address a paradox emanating from The Beatles’ music through a cross-disciplinary hybrid of reflections, drawing from both, musical practice itself and academic research. Indeed, despite their extreme stylistic variety, The Beatles’ songs seem to always bear a distinctive identity that emerges even more in similar works by other artists, whether they are merely inspired, derivative or explicitly paying homage. The authors, a musicologist and music producer, emphasize the importance of record production in The Beatles' music in a way that does justice not only to the final artifacts (the released songs) but also to the creative process itself (i.e., the songs "in the making"). Through an investigation into the work of George Martin and his team, as well as The Beatles themselves, this text sheds light on the role of the studio in shaping the group's eclectic but unique sound. The chapters address what makes a song “Beatlesque”, to what extent production choices are responsible for developing a style, production being understood not as a mere set of technicalities, but also in a more conceptual way, as well as the aesthetics, semiotics and philosophy that animated studio activity. The outcome is a book that will appeal to both students and researchers, as well as, of course, musicophiles of all kinds.

Book The Best Paul McCartney Songs

Download or read book The Best Paul McCartney Songs written by Larry Meagher and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul McCartney's music is part of the sonic tapestry that is modern culture—and there's never been anyone quite like him. His life began ordinarily enough. He was born June 18, 1942, the son of a cotton merchant (who moonlighted as a musician) and a nurse. James Paul McCartney grew up in lower middle-class Liverpool, England. His family wasn't poor, but they were far from wealthy. Young Paul was drawn to music at an early age, learning a bit of piano from his father and taking trumpet lessons. Then came the advent of rock and roll—out went the trumpet, in came the guitar. The teenage Paul eagerly embraced the raucous American sounds filtering from the radio. Paul's knowledge paid off almost immediately. As an audition, he played "20 Flight Rock" for a gang of Liverpool lads who wanted to start a band. They hired Paul on the spot. He took his place in the band alongside John Lennon. Not long afterward, Paul's friend George Harrison joined the group. And The Beatles were born. (Ringo Starr would join them a few years later.) By 1962, when they released their first record, The Beatles had forged an electrifying sound with a heavy beat, crisp instrumentation and tight vocal harmonies. Unlike most other bands of the era, they wrote their own songs. McCartney and Lennon had immediately clicked as a composing team. When their first album appeared in 1963, Paul and John were credited with writing half of the 14 tracks. In between the first single and the first album, they had released three more singles. All shot to number one on the record charts, and all were written by the Lennon/McCartney team.
